Bethel Hobbs Community Farm is a non-profit organization with a rich history. It is an 11 acre farm, located at 178 Oxhead Road in Centereach, and is ran entirely by volunteers. This community farm grows and harvests an average of over 50,000 pounds of fresh, organic produce, which then gets donated to over 11 food pantries / soup kitchens. They also offer CSA Memberships, educational programs, they host community events and they have a seasonal farm stand! Anyone is welcome to stop by and shop at this farm stand every Saturday from 10 AM - 3 PM, which started on June 12th and runs through October 10th. You will find organically grown produce and every purchase made will support the farm and their mission. The farm is proud to continue operating, however it is in need of some repairs, such as plumbing assistance, fountain repair and roofing work. If you or someone you know would be willing to donate their time and skills to assist in any of these projects, it would be such a blessing to their farm. Depending on the season, Bethel Hobbs Community Farm has a variety of farm work that volunteers can assist with, such as planting, weeding, harvesting, working in the greenhouse and property maintenance. Few summertime holidays elicit as much excitement as the Fourth of July, also known as Independence Day in the United States. Each year, family, friends and revelers anticipate the arrival of the holiday so they can host barbecues, enjoy the sun, listen to their favorite summertime tunes, and commemorate the freedoms afforded by the monumental events that led to the holiday’s establishment. Independence Day became a federal holiday in 1941, but July 4th has stood as the birth of American independence for much longer. July 4th marks a pivotal moment in the American Revolution. According to PBS, the colonies were forced to pay taxes to England’s King George III despite having no representation in the British Parliament. “Taxation without representation” became a battle cry and was one of several grievances colonists had with Great Britain. Conflict between the colonies had been going on for at least a
year before the colonies convened a Continental Congress in Philadelphia in June of 1776, says Military.com. On July 2, 1776, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence from England. Two days later, on July 4, 1776, delegates from the 13 colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence. The Declaration of Independence is an historic document drafted by Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson was considered the strongest and most eloquent writer of the declaration writing committee charged with putting the colonies’ sentiments into words. Richard Henry Lee of Virginia was one of the first people to present a resolution for American independence, and his commentary was the impetus for the formal Declaration of Independence. A total of 86 changes were made to Jefferson’s original draft until the final version was adopted. The signing of the document helped to solidify independence, and eventually lead to the
formation of the United States of America. A total of 56 delegates signed the document. Although John Hancock’s signature is the largest, it did not hold more weight than the other signatures. Rather, rumor has it, Hancock signed it so large so that the “fat, old King could read it without his spectacles.” However, the National Archives says it was also customary that, since Hancock was the president of the Continental Congress, he be the first person to sign the document centered below the text. The Pennsylvania Evening Post was the first newspaper to print the Declaration of Independence on July 6, 1776. The first public readings of the Declaration were held in Philadelphia’s Independence Square on July 8, 1776. We hope everyone enjoys the Fourth of July. essay and take a physical fitness test which consisted of a timed three-mile run and completing as many crunches and pull-ups as he could in three minutes. In an interview, he was asked questions about integrity and leadership. On June 25, just four days after graduating from Massapequa High School, Michael left for one month of training in Great Lakes, Illinois. That’s where he will begin his transformation into disciplined military personnel with academic, mental and physical training. After a few weeks back at home, he will head to San Diego in mid-August. While he will mostly live the next four years as a regular college student, Michael will have military obligations including special courses and a few nights of training every week. Each summer he will also spend three weeks at the Marine Corps base in Quantico, Virginia. “I always wanted to be in the military,” he said. “I have a love for my country and I want to serve for something greater than myself. To be able to go to college on a full scholarship and be able to serve my country is one of the greatest accomplishments,
if not the greatest accomplishment, of my life.” When Michael graduates in four years, he will be a second lieutenant and assume a leadership role in the Marines. At San Diego, he will major in criminal justice with the hope of becoming a lawyer for the Marine Corps in the future. Michael already has a head start, having taken the law classes offered at Massapequa High School and participating in the annual Law Day event featuring mock court cases. He also was a member of the varsity wrestling team from eighth through 10th grade, and has worked at Calda Pizza since ninth grade. His educational career began in kindergarten at Birch Lane Elementary School. One aspect about joining the Marine Corps that particularly stands out for Michael is the ability to see the world. He is especially interested in traveling to Japan. Michael will have the opportunity to do it all thanks to the earning the scholarship, which he attributes to the great education he received in Massapequa and having teachers who constantly pushed him to do his best.

Massapequa High School senior Michael Augello has two strong interests – serving his country and getting a college education. Thanks to a sizeable grant from the United States Marine Corps, he will get to do both. Michael received a full scholarship, valued at $180,000, to attend San Diego State University in the fall while also learning to become a military officer. He was presented with his NROTC scholarship by Staff Sgt. Diego Albino, from the Marine Corps recruiting station in Hicksville, during a small ceremony outside of the school on June 10. Michael was joined by family members as well as Principal Barbara Lowell and guidance counselors Tracy Munson and Matt McCauley. “It’s very competitive,” Staff Sgt. Albino said of the scholarship, which only about 10 students in New York received this year. “A lot of people apply for it; few get it.” To be eligible, Michael had to score at least 1000 on his SATs and 74 on the Armed Service Vocational Aptitude Battery. He also had to get letters of recommendation, write an

Obituary Marilyn E. Brooks, 92, Loving Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother Mrs. Brooks passed away peacefully on Wednesday June 2nd. Mrs. Brooks was born at home in Bellmore, N.Y. in 1928, the daughter of Harry J. Blank and Helen (Berry) Blank and sister of the late Harry Blank Jr, and Robert Blank. She attended Bellmore Elementary School, and
their family, sang in church choirs, and sailed the Great South Bay. Mrs. Brooks was a proud member and past president of the Amityville Woman’s Club, a member of Unqua Corinthian Yacht Club, a member of the Amityville Historical Society, and a member of the Massapequa Reformed Church. Above all else, Mrs. Brooks was a mother, grandmother,
W.C. Mepham Central High School, class of 1946. During World War II she served as a volunteer worker for the American Red Cross as a messenger. Following the war Marilyn met and married the late Owen E. Brooks in 1950. Mr. and Mrs. Brooks located to Amityville where they embraced everything the community offered. Together they raised
great grandmother, and a loving, caring wife. She put her many interests beneath her devotion to her family. She always made herself available to her children when coming home from school or needed support in any way. She served as a Brownie Leader, Cub Scout Den Mother, Sunday School teacher, and School Parents Advisory Committee
member. Mrs. Brooks was predeceased by her daughter, Alison Brooks Callahan (Thomas J.) who passed away after a heroic eight year battle with breast cancer. She is survived by two sons, Owen E. Brooks, Jr. (Margaret) and Jonathan E. Brooks (Elice) and nine grandchildren, LCDR Owen E. Brooks III, USN (Jayme), Rev. William C. Brooks (Alana), Kathryn
E. Callahan, Robert T. Brooks, Peter T. Callahan, Meghan E. Brooks, Rebecca M.E. Brooks, Rachael E.M. Brooks, and Lauren C. Brooks, and one great grandson Jacob O. Brooks Gifts may be made to the Massapequa Reformed Church. Burial will be in the family plot in East Marion, Long Island.
