Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.
The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad
cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the
risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to
be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important
for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.
The Massapequa School District is expanding its one-to-one Chromebook initiative for the 201718 school year to provide students in 10 grade levels with their own devices. Already, students in grades 7-12 are assigned Chromebooks, which they carry between school and home, and next year the sixth grade will be included in that program at Berner Middle School. In early June, fifth- and sixth-graders received their new state-of-theart devices, which have touchscreens and can be turned into tablets. The district’s technology learning coaches and computer teaching assistants gave students a brief introduction to the Chromebooks, such as how to access various applications, how to care for their mobile computers and how to personalize their desktops. All students in third, fourth and fifth grades will also be assigned their
own Chromebooks next year that remain in the classrooms. Devices that this year’s seniors are turning in will be used to replace older Chromebooks in carts that will be shared among kindergarten, firstand second-grade classes. Robert Schilling, assistant to the superintendent for assessment, student data and technology services, said that by expanding the Chromebook initiative to four additional grades, teachers and students will have more efficient and effective access to their resources. “So many of the tools that our teachers and students utilize for daily teaching and learning are online,” Mr. Schilling said. “Our Chromebook initiatives provides access to these tools anytime, anywhere, including throughout the school day, and creates countless opportunities for innovative practices.” Mr. Schilling added that the decision to broaden

There are many resources that students regularly use on Chromebooks such as Google Docs for writing assignments, Google Slides for multimedia presentations and online databases for research. Teachers use Haiku to post and accept homework assignments, and share links to articles or videos that support a lesson. Other programs used frequently include Pear Deck, Padlet, Seesaw, KidBlog and Code. org. The Massapequa School District’s fifth-graders made history when they graduated from elementary school and will become trailblazers again when they become the first sixth-grade class to enter Berner Middle School. In September, 546 graduates from six elementary schools will come together for the first time as the high school Class of 2024. During moving up ceremonies on June 19th and 20th, the students were reminded of the new opportunities they will have including foreign language instruction, having their own Chromebooks, making new friends, and getting involved in extracurricular activities and intramural sports. “This milestone is extra special this year,” Superintendent Lucille F. Iconis said in addressing the graduates. “You have been prepared well and you are ready.” Student speakers cited their fondest elementary school moments, thanked the teachers who have helped them along the way and expressed joy for all that lies ahead. They expressed confidence that the character traits they developed in the past six years will serve them well in the next step of their educational journey. “Birch Lane is an amazing school and I watched my classmates and myself grow up to be good people,” said Olivia Rappa. “The teachers are so warm and understanding.” The ceremonies included awards, musical presentations and photo slideshows, and each program had its own personal touch. Students at Birch Lane and Fairfield elementary schools presented carnations to their parents. “We’re not kids anymore,” said Lockhart fifth-grader Joseph Ivancich. “We are graduates. It is time for us to move on and take another step toward being adults.”

Blue caps flew in the air as Massapequa High School seniors heard their final words as students in the district: “Class dismissed.” Following that declaration by Principal Patrick DiClemente, they officially became graduates. The 613 students were part of the 61st class to graduate from the school during a ceremony at Hofstra University on June 19th. The milestone marked a new beginning in their lives, as the graduates will head to college, join the workforce or enlist in the armed services. “Our senior class represents an outstanding composition of students who will go in diverse directions,” Mr.
DiClemente said. Valedictorian Daniel Urli told his peers that they all have so much more left to accomplish in their lives. The top-ranked senior encouraged them to follow their passions, expand their boundaries and have some fun along the way. Christopher Hadsall, salutatorian of the Class of 2017, said that the journey from kindergartners to high school graduates has made them all a little more human. They demonstrated humility and determination, longed for companionship, searched for inspiration and celebrated achievements. “We made it,” he said. “The light at the end of the tunnel is shining brightly

Outstanding Class Graduates upon us.” General Organization President Kristen Ader compared navigating high school to learning how to drive, and senior year was like “your parents handing you the keys to your car and letting you go.” She reminded her classmates that as they begin new chapters in their lives that the journey is just as important as the destination. Following the presentations of awards to recognize one student in each subject area, the graduates received their diplomas, moved their tassels from right to left and joined the ranks of Massapequa High School alumni.
