They also had carnival games, basketball hoops, a DJ and lunch for the kids. The children look forward to this event all year long. Gold Coast Programs The Gold Coast Arts Center, a non-for-profit visual arts center, is open year-round to promote and support the arts through education, exhibition, performance and outreach. New York City Police Department Inspector James Guida, who died in the line of duty as a result of metastatic sarcoma, a rare cancer he developed being exposed to toxins while working at the 9/11 site, recently had Merritt Avenue in Massapequa ceremonially renamed and

dedicated in his memory. Members of the Guida family joined with local elected officials at the street sign dedication ceremony and unveiling, which took place on the corner of Merritt Avenue and St. Mark’s Place in Massapequa. The location is near where Inspector

Guida resided. Three intersections along Merritt Avenue will bear the name of the highly regarded officer. Inspector Guida, a 33 year veteran of the NYPD, was very active in the community including extensive service as a Troop Leader with the Boy Scout of America.

As I write this column, just two days from the summer solstice, I am inspired by several seasonal thoughts… Weather. That great natural occurrence that has the ability to singlehandedly cancel any plans you may have made, no matter how far in advance, with no regard for reservations, ticket purchases, how many people you may have coordinated with… When Mother Nature is compelled to bless us with a torrential thunderstorm, blizzard, blistering heat or any other, more serious, natural disaster, you can say goodbye to your beach day. Society. We seem to enjoy our solitude, even when we are among several thousand of our closest friends in a

stadium or concert arena. As I mentioned in a previous column, I have tickets to about seven upcoming performances over the next several months. In the three shows I have attended so far, it was amazing to look around at the audience and see the great majority on their cell phones, taking “selfies” with friends, surfing Facebook, Instagram… everything but actually listening to the music. Money well spent. Traffic. Long Island is known for its congestion. While summer may bring a bit of respite in the form of school being out of session and some taking their vacation time elsewhere, this is counteracted by those who migrate en masse to the beaches and parks and pools daily, clogging up every major

Nutritional Lesson Massapequa High School-Ames Campus freshmen in Denise Baldinger’s Health classes were game on teaching the importance of eating right and staying healthy to Lockhart Elementary School students who came to visit their class for an

interactive lesson. After weeks of researching topics related to good health, nutrition and wellness, the freshmen students created original board games to teach first, second and fourth graders how to lead healthy lives. They promoted ways of

making good choices as the youngsters answered questions and advanced around the game boards. Each game contained nutrition facts and promoted topics such as the recommended food plate for healthy eating.

Red Watch Band Forty-four students — seven from Massapequa High School-Main Campus and 37 from the Ames Campus — are skilled in responding to alcoholrelated emergencies and could potentially save a life. They recently completed the Red Watch Band training program, an initiative spearheaded by students and administrators from Stony Brook University to curb alcohol-related accidents among high school and college students. Participants in the program are required to complete two hours of alcohol emergency training and three hours

of CPR training, and attend follow-up meetings to discuss their experiences, reinforce skills and recruit new student members when training sessions become available. To acknowledge their new skills, students were presented with certificates and red wrist bands to remind them that every second counts in an alcohol-related emergency. Massapequa’s program is coordinated by high school social workers Kimberly Hession of the Ames Campus, and Joanne Waters of the Main Campus, as well as school nurse and certified CPR instructor Kathy Perednia of the

Ames Campus. Each of them praised the students for their commitment and dedication to the program. “All of you were here when you needed to be here; the program ran very smoothly thanks to your efforts,” Hession said to an audience of students and their parents. The program is sponsored by Massapequa Takes Action (MTA), a school-community partnership aimed at educating students and parents about the dangers of risky behaviors and promoting activities that empower students to lead safe, healthy lives.

Symbol Of Friendship Unqua and East Lake Elementary Schools were the proud recipients of Koda Benches, thanks to a collaborative project by Massapequa High School art and technology students aimed at promoting more inclusive school environments. Koda is a Native American word meaning friend or companion. The high school students designed and constructed the benches to feature positive, inspirational symbols and sayings intended to help students embrace acceptance of all students. “The benches are a place

for children to go when needing a friend to play with or talk to, or where friends can sit together and talk,” explained art teacher Penny Schneider, who worked with James Desantis’ technology classes on the project. The concept is similar to the “Buddy Bench,” which many schools have added to their grounds, but Schneider wanted to put her own spin on the idea and ramp up the creativity factor. Unqua’s bench promotes “Furry Friends” and is designed as a raccoon, the school’s mascot. East Lake’s bench features

Massapequa Takes Action In response to the growing number of tragedies that have affected our community the Massapequa Takes Action (MTA) Coalition, in partnership with YES Community Counseling Center (YES) applied for and was awarded a grant from the NY State Office of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS). Governor Cuomo recently announced that “$6.2 million has been awarded to ten community coalitions across New York State to help prevent heroin use, prescription drug abuse, and heroin overdose among adolescents and young adults, and increase awareness about the dangers of these drugs. New York was notified about this new grant funding from the Center of Substance Abuse Prevention, a division of the Federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration (SAMHSA), in September 2014. Coalitions receiving the Strategic Prevention Framework-Partnership for Success funding and will use these funds to implement environmental prevention strategies targeting heroin and prescription drug abuse in the 12- to 25-year-old age group in their community.” This highly competitive award, one of ten in NY State and the only one awarded to Long Island, will provide additional

resources for the Massapequa community to continue and expand our efforts that will address the prevention of drug and alcohol use and overdoses. According to the CADCA, “Coalitions are our nation’s most effective vehicle for prevention.” Further, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that every day, 12 people die as a result of drug overdoses, many attributed to prescription painkillers. These staggering statistics should be of concern to each and every one of us regardless of our age, or the ages of our children. There is no one that is immune from the far reaching consequences of addiction. Massapequa Takes Action is a coalition that has been existence since 1977. Initially formed after the implementation of the Pride Survey, the coalition has maintained its commitment to developing programs that address issues related to alcohol and drug use, and educating children, families and adult community members about risk taking behaviors. The Executive Committee of MTA, which consists of members of the Massapequa School District, YES Community Counseling Center, the PTSA and other concerned community partners have been expanding efforts to plan, develop, and implement promising

programs and best practices to combat this issue. Jamie Bogenshutz, Executive Director of YES commented “this grant is a wonderful opportunity for the members of Massapequa community to come together utilizing the very best of what we know of prevention and intervention strategies to protect and educate our children and every member of our community. We know that we can make extraordinary things happen with the support and expertise of the NYS Office of Substance Abuse Services. She added that “the staggering statistics related to the overdoses and fatalities must serve as a wake-up call to all that call Massapequa their home.” Any member of the community who wishes to be a part of this effort should e-mail massapequatakesaction@ yesccc.org. Independence Activities The Incorporated Village of Massapequa Park is proud to announce the Independence Day activities taking place in its Village. On Saturday, June 27th, the Ancient Order of Hibernians Division 15 will host Irish Night in Brady Park from 6 to 10 p.m. Bring your chairs and be treated to great entertainment. All Town Beaches Open Residents now have an opportunity to enjoy the Town’s beautiful beaches at Tobay, Centre Island, Philip B. Healey at Florence Avenue and Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Beaches every day of the week. Summer is here, and if you’re a beach lover, you’ll be looking forward to spending time enjoying the Town beaches. Residents can visit all Town beaches seven days a week. Beach stickers, which allow entrance to all seven Town of Oyster Bay beaches, will be available to residents for $60. Town

residents who are military veterans or active military members, volunteer firefighters of a department within the Town, auxiliary police and members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, are offered a reduced rate of $30. Senior citizens 60 and older, who have a Town Senior Citizen Beach I.D. Card, obtainable at the Town Clerk’s Office for a one-time fee of $30 plus a $2 photo fee, will be able to obtain a beach sticker at no charge. Disabled Town residents who are receiving disability insurance benefits under the Social Security Act,

as well as those who have a permanent disability as certified in writing by a physician, can obtain a free beach sticker after first securing an I.D. card at the Town Clerk’s Office for a one-time fee of $30 plus a $2 photo fee. Burns Town Park, located on Merrick Road in Massapequa. “Daniel is highly successful in all academic areas and shows a particularly exuberant enthusiasm for Spanish,” Kincaid said. “He always goes above and beyond to develop his language skills and has achieved a great level of fluency in two years. He takes the initiative to practice the language with friends and, more significantly, this year when we were studying a unit on health and students had to research a Spanishspeaking non-profit organization, Daniel went beyond the scope of the project and took it upon himself to reach out to the director and converse with him in Spanish to better understand his agency.” In his nomination for Anthony, German teacher Dean Guarnaschelli,

who has taught Anthony the language for two years, said, “Anthony has a gift when it comes to academics, whether learning by himself or in a group situation. Learning German takes not only discipline but also a great deal of imagination. Throughout the years Anthony has shown that he possesses both of these traits and has great potential for college-level study in the future.” Both students were very humbled by the awards and praised their teachers for their excellent instructional skills, acknowledging that they would not have come so far in learning a world language had it not been for their talent, guidance and support.

In rooms replicating Nassau County courtrooms, more than 60 Massapequa High School law students, dressed in their professional best, argued cases before real judges during the school’s annual Law Day. This real-world simulation of trial law, similar to that of law school, is one of the largest, most inclusive high school law programs on Long Island and a longstanding tradition in the Massapequa School District. Before audiences of aspiring lawyers, Massapequa’s top law students argued a criminal law case on cyber-stalking

and identity theft, an environmental law case on the Bethpage plume and water pollution, and a public advocacy case on student loans. They also presented civil law cases on sexual harassment and on contracts dealing with child stars. “Law Day brings the practice of law to life as our top law students argue cases at the highest of standards before real judges,” said Daniel Bachman, Massapequa High School social studies teacher, Mock Trial advisor and coordinator of Law Day. “Students from the law program are genuinely excited to watch and learn

from the best practices of law students and alumni.” Students were judged on poise, knowledge of the law, creativity, and zealous yet courteous advocacy by Hon. William O’Brien, Nassau County Court judge, Hon. Paul Meli, 4th District Court judge, and Massapequa alumni who are practicing attorneys or are currently studying law at Cornell, Hofstra, Binghamton and Seton Hall. Winners of Law Day advanced to argue cases in front of the Massapequa Park Village Court, also part of the law program’s tradition.

Town Pools Open The Town of Oyster Bay’s Community Park Pools and Harry Tappen Pool will officially open for the 2015 summer season on Saturday, June 20th. Town of Oyster Bay Community Park Pools, located at Bethpage, Marjorie R. Post (Massapequa), PlainviewOld Bethpage, and Syosset-

Woodbury Community Parks, and Harry Tappen Pool will be open daily until Labor Day on Monday, September 7th. Registration is currently underway at Tappen and the Community Park pools. Early registration at the Community Park Pools takes place from 12 noon until 6 p.m. on Mondays,

Wednesdays, Fridays and weekends from noon until 7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. At Tappen Pool, registration will take place from noon until 5 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and weekends, and from 12 noon until 7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Beginning June 27th,

The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund recognized three graduating seniors from the Walter G. O’Connell High School. This year’s winners were: Chaukim Peters for Track, Gabrielle Clement for Soccer and Carlos Giaraffa for the Writing Component only. Not long after Brittney’s passing, a fund was set up by a family friend to help with costs. This community-donated money was not used for that, but made into a scholarship fund to help those scholars who share characteristics similar to Brittney. The criteria for the scholarships is simple: 1. The scholar is looking

to attend college. 2. The scholar must complete a 250 word essay on “The funniest thing they ever did” or “The funniest thing they have ever seen” 3. Two must participate in high school sports, one from Women’s Track, and one from Women’s Soccer. 4. The third scholarship is offered to a male or female who completes the writing component only. “These students were able to show that they have what it takes to be a high school athlete, but also have a softer side and write about something funny. We also shared a smile. Smiling is one of the most enjoyable and contagious things, and they don’t

come as often anymore, but these helped,” said Brittney’s dad, Tom, at the Senior Awards Ceremony in June. The Brittney Walsh Scholarship Fund has awarded close to $10,000 in the past three years. Brittney’s mom Cheryl has made it “a personal goal to ensure that a minimum award of $2,500 is given annually to help these students’ future, not only to help with college costs, but to help remind them to make smart choices and not to drink and drive.” For more information or on how to donate, visit www.smile14.org.
