The murals painted on the side wall of Town Bagel next to Massapequa High School have become one of the most visual displays of school spirit in the community. Now, Massapequa High School senior Ana Ruiz Garcia can add her name to those who have created one. Ana’s design was chosen as the new mural after several mural designs were submitted then
voted on by the student body and staff. The mural was recently painted by art students under the supervision of art teachers Gale Domingo and Julie Thornton. Ana, who has taken several art classes including Drawing & Painting I, Computer Art & Design, Sculpture and Creative Crafts, plans to pursue a career in animation.

The Cub Scouts of Pack 696 set up for their annual fund raising car wash at 9 a.m. in the parking lot of St. Rose of Lima R.C. Church last week. Scouts, ranging from Kindergarten through 4th grade helped to wash a line of cars so long, that they had to “double up” on the number of cars being washed at one time. Family and friends came to show their support and lend a helping hand. “Soap suds on the cheek and a bunch of scouts all
scrubbing a car at once - this is what we aim to see each year,” stated Jim Yahner, car wash director. “That is a sign that the boys are working hard and really getting into the fun of it.” One scout noticed that dedicated member of the community was roofer that had worked on his home earlier that year. “Hey, thanks for helping us fix our roof,” he said in appreciation. The roofer smiled at the scout and said,
“You are very welcome!” He was obviously pleased that the boy had recognized him and took time to show his gratitude. Funds from the carwash will be used to help the scouts participate in summer activities. The scouts raised over $800! A big thank you to St. Rose Church for the use of their parking lot, and to the Massapequa community for their dedication and support of our scouts.

Fifth-grade students from Raymond J. Lockhart Elementary School got down to business at Commerce Plaza in Levittown. They participated in a unique, hands-on educational program that introduces students to the business community in a simulated work environment. Students learned about
the free enterprise system, careers, economics, citizenship and the general skills needed to function in the workforce. Students received paychecks, made bank deposits, wrote checks, operated businesses and prepared cost sheets while thinking critically and working as a team.

Costello’s Ace Hardware It all began back in 1976. Our country was going through a terrible recession. Our local economy was devastated. At this time, founder Vincent Costello was forced to close his air conditioning and heating contracting business. Looking for a means to support his wife and 10 children, Vinnie stumbled upon a business opportunity, a retail hardware store. Originally opened 1973, it was a small, neglected, under-stocked store of barely over 2,000 square feet located in Deer Park. With no previous retail experience and no other options, Vinnie courageously embarked on a journey that few would ever have dared. Sales were dismal and the store was in desperate need of attention. He worked every day for 5 years and managed to make the store profitable. While most would have been satisfied with this miraculous feat, Vinnie was determined to grow beyond that one small store. By refinancing his home, he opened a second location in 1982. This 5,000 square foot industrial store was also located in Deer Park, on the other side of town.
In 1988, another opportunity arose. A shopping center was being constructed in the little-known town of Nesconset. It wasn’t the most populated area, but Vinnie had lived there for over ten years and he thought that the residents of Nesconset would respond well to a neighborhood hardware store. Did they ever! The 4,000 square foot store was an instant success, managing to be profitable from the day it opened. Over the next four years, the success of that store helped fuel the expansion of the company to larger stores in Farmingdale and Central Islip. During those early growing years, his children worked in the business and contributed to its success. Their dad taught them the importance of taking care of the customers. “Treat them like family,” he would say. He taught them how to solve their problems and how to learn from them. Most importantly, he taught them that the most sacred bond between them and their customers is trust. In 2001, with Vinnie’s encouragement and guidance, six of his children opened a 25,000 square foot store

in Bellmore. This store was the size of all of the other locations combined - it was huge! It seemed impossible to find enough products to fill it. It took some time, but eventually they had a successful home center. This hardware/home center concept has continued over the past nine years in Massapequa Park, Farmingdale, Bethpage, New Hyde Park, Island Park, Centereach, West Islip, North Massapequa, Northport, West Babylon, Garden City Park, Smithtown, East Islip, Rocky Point, Great Neck and Copiague. Triple The Donations Amid clusters of pink balloons and a sea of cheering students and faculty, a group of 47 teachers and students from Massapequa High SchoolAmes Campus set a new record for the school. Each took a seat at the makeshift haircutting station, set up in the school’s hallway by Debra Ienna of Safie Salon and Day Spa of Massapequa, to have their hair carefully measured and cut for the
Pantene Beautiful Lengths program. The program transforms hair into free, high-quality wigs for patients undergoing cancer treatments. Each person who donated received a complimentary haircut and style at the salon. More than 50 ponytails of hair was donated to the cause, after a few other ponytails from those who had recent haircuts contributed to the event, tripling the amount of
ponytails collected last year. “We had a tremendous turnout and great support from our school and faculty,” said health teacher Denise Baldinger, coordinator of the event. “We are so pleased to be able to help cancer patients feel better about their appearance as they undergo treatment by giving them the opportunity to wear a wig made with real hair.”

Tripping Down Memory Lane I recently attended my old dance studio’s annual recital, where I had the opportunity to watch the entire show from the comfort of the audience for only the second year, after 20 years of “gracing” the stage myself. I use that term lightly, as there were quite a number of cringeworthy moments during those two decades of dance. How could there not be? There was the time I froze midway through a number, right as I was dead center, absolutely perplexed as to what the next step might be. Dozens of others twirled and leapt around me, as I stood there, horrified. Talk about the world seeming to move in slow motion around you. All in all, it was probably a five-second pause; but it sure seemed like an eternity until the choreography (thankfully) kicked back in.
Then there was the year I was selected to sit atop another dancer’s shoulders, while he carried me clear across the stage. Oh, and did I mention we were dressed in circus attire? The fact was, we had rehearsed the lift and the dynamics associated with balancing in such a precarious position for weeks on end. However, we had failed to account for the silky, slippery material the costumes would be made of. You can imagine the rest. I believe there exists a photo of the scene, with me desperately clinging onto the “ringmaster’s” hat for dear life with a huge, frozen, petrified grin, silently willing the stage to shrink so that we could make it into the wings immediately. Ah, memories… And then there was the ultimate classic. My first year, six years old. Unfamiliar with the protocol of lining up before
my number, how much time to allow, etc., my mother and I found ourselves in the dressing room as the first few notes of “Somewhere Out There” filtered through the doorway. My song! I’ll leave you with this image: A dozen or so girls tiptoeing in their tutus to the music when, out of nowhere, comes another tiny ballerina, arms flailing, flying across the stage to take her position among the class. Yup. I always did know how to make an entrance. After 20 years, I took my final curtain call. But the desire to dance remains; the amazing feeling you get from being on stage – one that you would only know if you have had the privilege of being there – still lingers on, even as I watched the next generation of dancers take their turns in the spotlight. May they have as many fond memories as I do (and a few bloopers too!).

The Town of Oyster Bay’s Community Park Pools and Harry Tappen Pool will officially open for the 2014 summer season on Saturday, June 21st, a week earlier than the previously announced June 28th date, according to Town Supervisor John Venditto. “Pools are enjoyed by people of all ages,” Supervisor Venditto said. “The revised opening date will let residents get an early jump on the season. Going for a swim is one of the most enjoyable activities of the summertime, and we have spectacular facilities in the Town.” The Supervisor said that Town of Oyster Bay Community Park Pools, located at Bethpage, Marjorie R. A copy of the resident’s general tax bill, deed or survey (with section, block and lot number) is required, as well as a driver’s license or current utility bill. A birth certificate is required for children 16 years of age and younger. The hours of operation at the Community Park Pools will be 10:30 a.m. until 9 p.m. daily from June 21st through August 24th, Noon until 8 p.m. from August 25th until August 31st and 10:30 a.m. until 6 p.m on Labor Day, Monday September 1st. At Tappen Pool, the hours of operation from June 21st through August 1st will be Noon until dusk Mondays through Fridays, 9 a.m. until

FIELD DAY - Students at McKenna Elementary School enjoyed Field Day events on Friday, June 6th. The weather was just perfect. Some of the activities included volleyball, various water relays, magician for the younger grades, T-shirt signing, DJ, pretzels and ices. Each grade wore different color shirts. A VERY SPECIAL THANK YOU June 1st was a grand day for our 2nd Annual Massapequa Street Fair. We were blessed with perfect sunshine and packed with thousands of people enjoying all the entertainment, food, refreshments, and the 102 vendor booths. All of this was made possible by the generosity of our Sponsors and the Town of Oyster Bay.

Our Grand Marshal, Past President Joe Basile was the creator of this event. Joe was with us in mind and spirit. He received many citations from our elected officials and was truly honored as our “Mr. Massapequa.” The streets were filled with vendors, food, magic performances, by John Lepre. Tin Can the Clown, created animal balloons for the children and did face painting. There were pony rides, a petting zoo, live bands, and performances by many school local talents. B103’s, The Wiseman broadcasted live throughout the day. Boy Scout Troop #90 presented the Colors and a young lady from Massapequa, Dina Elardo performed our National Anthem.
I would like to thank my entire Board. This was truly a joint effort of a very dedicated group of people who made this fair our best ever! Co-Chairs Joe Basile and Tony Ventiera designed the program and the rest of the Board worked countless hours to make this physically possible. First Vice President Susan Martin, 3rd Vice President Howard Ritzer, Secretary Jamie Bogenshutz, Past Presidents Robert Barrett and Phyllis Doria along with another veteran Chamber Board member, Sal Polito spent days and many hours performing huge tasks. Many of our newcomer Board members, Steve Orisses, J.P. Scarisbrick, Joanne Hawthorne, Lucrezia Mastroserio, Hercules Nickolopoulos, and Karen Gawrych were on hand in every aspect. Board Member, TD Bank VP Lauren Pulvidente, once again gave us a beautiful program consisting of children’s music, dance and karate performances and many local talent groups!

Others whom gave us their time and conscious efforts were, Glenn Kearney of the Nassau County Auxiliary Police and Mark Wenzel, Assistant Director of YES Community Counseling Center. Many Town of Oyster employees from Parks and Highway under the direction of Commissioners Nocerino and Hanifan provided us with top-notch crews including awesome Parks Supervisor, John Raymond. Town of Oyster Bay’s Public Safety Commissioner, Justin McCaffrey and Deputy Commissioner Barry Bree provided guidance and formal direction during the weeks prior and were on hand from 6:00 a.m. to closing on the day of the Fair. Thank you to Massapequa Park Mayor, Jeff Pravato for allowing us to hang our banner across Park Blvd. and of course our terrific office staff, Administrator, Anna Sapone and Office Manager, Fran Nocella whom worked tirelessly during the weeks prior to the Fair and joined us on the day of, to ensure that everything went smoothly.

Students Congratulated Nassau County Legislator Michael Venditto was pleased to congratulate Grace Day School’s top students on their outstanding academic performances. Valedictorian Alexandria Rothschild-Edwards and salutatorian Hannah Daley both received citations for their academic achievements throughout the school year and their high scores on the Catholic High School Entrance Examination (CHSEE). Legislator Venditto presented the awards to the students and took time to teach them about the structure of state and local government. Alexandria Rothschild - Edwards is this year’s valedictorian at Grace. Her outstanding score on the CHSEE earned her a scholarship to St. Dominic’s High School in Oyster Bay, where she will matriculate in the fall. She scored 10th place on the National French Test out of approximately 24,000 students who sat for the exam. She is the
first student homilist at Grace, and preached at our Memorial Day chapel service. She is active member of choir and orchestra and had a supporting role in this year’s school production of the Wizard of Oz as Glenda, the good witch of the north. Hannah Daley is this year’s salutatorian at Grace. Her high score on the CHSEE earned her a scholarship to St. John the Baptist Catholic High School in West Islip, where she will matriculate in the fall. She earned 7th place on National French Test, out of 24,000 participants. She is an active member of our school outreach club: KidsCare, and a valuable member of our soccer and basketball teams. She played a supporting role in this year’s production of the Wizard of Oz as the Scarecrow. Grace Day School extends its warmest congratulations to both Alexandria, Hannah and their families on a job very well done!

Town Beaches To Open Town of Oyster Bay Councilman Joe Pinto is pleased to announce that residents will soon have an opportunity to enjoy the Town’s beautiful beaches as Tobay, Centre Island, Philip B. Healey at Florence Avenue and Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Beaches every day of the week beginning on Saturday, June 21st. “If you’re a beach lover, you must be excited that the official start of summer is here with plenty of time to enjoy the Town beaches,” said Councilman Pinto. “Therefore, I am very happy to announce that beginning June 21, all Town beaches will be open seven days a week. “ Councilman Pinto also said that beach stickers, which allow entrance to all seven Town of Oyster
Bay beaches, will be available to residents at the affordable cost of $60. In appreciation for their service, Town residents who are military veterans or active military members, volunteer firefighters of a department within the Town, auxiliary police and members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary will get a reduced rate of $25. Senior citizens, 60 and older, who have a Town Senior Citizen Beach I.D. Card, obtainable at the Town Clerk’s Office for a one-time fee of $30 plus a $2 photo fee, will be able to obtain a beach sticker at no charge. Disabled Town residents who are receiving disability insurance benefits under the Social Security Act, as well as those who have a permanent disability as certified in writing by a
physician, can obtain a free beach sticker after first securing an I.D. card at the Town Clerk’s Office for a one-time fee of $30 plus a $2 photo fee. “The Town of Oyster Bay has spectacular beaches and I am so glad that the Town’s residents will be able to enjoy those beaches throughout the summer,” added Councilman Pinto. “It’s amenities like these that make the Town of Oyster Bay a special place to live.” For more information about Town of Oyster Beaches or about obtaining a beach pass, Town residents should call the Town of Oyster Bay Parks Department Beach Division at 516.797.4110 or visit the Town’s website, EAGLE HONOR - Nassau County Legislator Michael Venditto recently attended the www.oysterbaytown.com. By: Peggy Bayer, Islip People came from all around to see what they could see. They heard she had a lot of things piled high as they could be. How did she gather all this stuff? It took so many years. To dispose of it will be quite rough - at least for her in tears. For each treasured trinket is a sweet memory Of her youth, of her husband, and her children - there were three. A sweet blue baby blanket from her first baby born. It may be frayed and tattered and just a little torn. She does not want to part with it for any price, you see. Though now adult, he’ll be her baby for eternity. So now she clings to each old thing feeling quite forlorn. For people gone now from her life, she still has to mourn.

You can’t keep all these things they tell her - there just isn’t that much room. The new place will be better for you, Her heart fills with dread and gloom. Some photos in an album show her late husband in his youth, A letter to the tooth fairy and the third baby’s first little tooth. Roses pressed in a book to preserve their bloom, She remembers as a gift from her loving groom. She found things she had forgotten and didn’t know she had. Some things made her feel good; others made her sad. The clay handprint ashtray someone made in camp The high school woodshop project that had become a lamp. She found handmade greeting cards “To my Mommy and my Dad.” If this was better for her, why did it feel so bad? This was her life piled up outside she wanted to declare. She was afraid of all the changes and moving now elsewhere. Don’t make me feel like I’m a problem - I’m your mother after all. Don’t be impatient with me or bothered when I call. She wanted them to know her feelings and to let her know they care. Please listen to me - my memories I need to share!
