have shown these programs raise students’ scores significantly on math, economics and personal finance tests and prepare them for life’s financial decisions.” In her 800-word essay, Melanie was asked to research the job responsibilities of a capital markets analyst and then, with a focus on longterm goals, select two investments, explain why these investments were chosen and describe how the national and global economic environment would affect them. Melanie chose Alibaba Group, a Chinese e-commerce platform, and Denbury Resources, an extractor of

oil and natural gas, advising “These two investments reflect the two most important characteristics of a long-term investment strategy… the weakness in oil prices that is currently weighing on shares of Denbury is benefiting the shares of Alibaba. Should oil and gas prices begin to head higher, the negative impact on Alibaba’s customers’ spending will be somewhat offset by the positive impact on the sales and earnings of Denbury Resources.” InvestWrite enables students like Melanie to develop the personal financial savvy needed to make practical financial decisions with confidence and gain a deeper understanding of economic opportunities, consequences, and benefits.

Students consider realworld events and news, conduct research online, and develop investment recommendations. They work in groups during the Stock Market Game program and then write their InvestWrite essays individually to reflect their critical thinking, analysis and creative talents. Strong academically and athletically, Melanie is a member of National Honor Society and was named an All-Long Island athlete in soccer and basketball. She plans to study biology at Fairfield University in the fall and hopes to pursue a career in Sports Medicine. Aromando, who has taught Business at Massapequa High School for 10 years and serves as the DECA Advisor, said, “Through InvestWrite, students gain a greater depth of understanding of the stock market, financial careers and the economy.” Both Melanie and Aromando were honored at an event at Massapequa High School on May 5th.

I recently read an article in the latest issue of Editor & Publisher magazine which touched on the apparent surge in the success of community newspapers over the last several years, a direct counterpoint to the oftpeddled theory that “print is dead.” The majority of credit for these weeklies’ steady success seems to point to their unique ability to provide extremely localized content that, quite simply, cannot be found anywhere else. While many national and daily chains have resorted to using wire services to supplement their content, community publications remain entrenched in those neighborhoods they serve. Case in point: South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers

currently consists of 23 separate editions, circulating to at least double the number of individual neighborhoods, taking in dozens of school districts, libraries, local sports organizations, clubs, religious institutions, and on and on. We accept submissions directly from these groups, as well as any readers who may have something newsworthy to submit. How many publications can boast that? The point is, not many, leading to a flourishing community weekly that caters to its audience. Imagine that. Growing up, South Bay was always the publication you waited to receive in the mail each week, anxious to flip through the pages to read the latest highlights from your neighborhood, scan through

the wedding and birth announcements, academic and athletic accomplishments and more. How exciting it was to actually know some of these people who were featured – and occasionally, if you were lucky, to see your own name in print. Many clippings in my scrapbook are from none other than the old South Bay. How fulfilling to know that, over 60 years after its initial founding, our publication is still providing the same service to the community, to individuals within each neighborhood we reach. You simply can’t replace that sort of personalized touch. So, to all those weeklies out there – keep cranking. Your influence is being widely felt across the nation, one community at a time.

Sights on Future

From the time he was three years old, it was apparent to those around him that Matthew Greene, now a Massapequa High School senior, had a gift for listening to music and then playing it back on the piano with seamless ease. “I remember getting a toy piano as a gift when I was three and it was at that moment my family realized I had a talent for music,” Matt said. This fall, Matt will attend the University of Delaware on an $80,000 scholarship to study music composition. He aspires to be the next John Williams, the composer of famous film scores from Star Wars, ET, Jaws and Indiana Jones, to name a few. Judging

by the awards he has won in the musical composition category of the National PTA Reflections Contest, he is on his way to do just that. Over the past four years, Matt has won top honors in the Reflections Contest. As a freshman and sophomore, he was one of only three Award of Excellence winners for his compositions in his division and age category. As a sophomore, he was invited to Washington D.C. to attend a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Department of Education, along with the other winners in celebration of this accomplishment, a highlight of his high school career. This year, he received the National Merit Award

for his musical composition entry, beating out 30,000 contestants and placing among nine top finalists that were chosen for his division and age category. During the award ceremony, he was surprised to hear his composition playing as he walked into the venue. “It was a surreal moment,” he said. “It is really nice to have this recognition. Because of the Reflections Program and the validation I received, I am now studying musical composition in college and embarking on a career that I love to do.” Matt began taking piano lessons at age 5 and started composing regularly by age 10. He has created hundreds of pieces, but singling out his favorite is hard. “I love them all for different reasons,” he said. His sophomore year, he arranged a march for the Symphonic Band to perform and in his junior year he created an original composition for the Orchestra to play. “I was really pleased with the feedback from my peers,” Matt said. “They loved it and that just fueled my passion for writing music.” Matt has perfect pitch and

plays a variety of instruments in addition to the piano, including the oboe, guitar, the drums, xylophone and ukulele. He sings with the Crooners, a selective male chorus. He has been a member of Jazz Band since elementary school, and since sophomore year, has played piano for the Poparazzi Orchestra Ensemble and the drums for the Percussion Ensemble. Matt received perfect scores for piano from New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) as a freshman, sophomore and junior; and was named an All-County musician twice and was once an alternate All-State musician. He played piano in the pit orchestra for

the high school musicals “My Fair Lady” and “Cinderella.” He took music theory classes and music history for college credit. Outside of school, he plays piano for a theater group, with a folk band every week at the 5 p.m. mass at Maria Regina Roman Catholic Church and for the Massapequa Chapter of Piano for Patients where volunteers play piano for patients in nursing homes. For his efforts, Matt received a $1,000 scholarship from the organization. Matt credits his piano teacher for the past 12 years, Nancy Deutsch, and high school music teachers Ilena Dempsey, Andrew Dwork, Nicole Greene, Marjorie

Spagnoulo and Mark Stempel for helping him realize his goals as a musician. “Matthew Greene is one of those rare students who is as dedicated to his art as he is talented,” Stempel said. “This young man has shown a great innate talent. Matt works extremely hard to achieve a high standard of performance. He has also demonstrated a creative talent in composition. Matt is one of those students who is such a major part of our entire music department. All the music teachers rely on his talents and hard work ethic to help us with our ensembles and concerts.”
