Oyster Bay Town Councilman Louis B. Imbroto announced that the deadline has been extended to June 14th for those wishing to participate in the Town of Oyster Bay’s “Battle of the Bands” competition. The program, which is orchestrated through the Town of Oyster Bay’s Cultural & Performing Arts Division of the Town’s Department of Community & Youth Services, is a unique opportunity showcase some of the Town’s young musical talent. Hybrid Theory I recently had the pleasure of attending the 2017 Press Club of Long Island Media Awards; this year, not only as a member of the Board of Directors, but as an award recipient. Our Seasons Magazine was honored with second place in the Best Magazine category, a proud moment for our fledgling publication. While there, I had the opportunity to chat with several local journalists in attendance about topics ranging from the state of the media as a whole to our own publication’s role in the journalism community on Long Island. It brought to light the question of what, exactly, South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers’ mission has been since 1953, and how very unique a position we fill in the wider landscape of community weeklies. We have always categorized
ourselves as somewhat of a “hybrid” publication; far more news content than a shopper, but without the editorial staff of, say, a subscription-based community newspaper like those found in so many small towns in our area. While this description might be confusing to some, upon further explanation at the awards dinner, I saw the familiar nod of recognition – oh, that’s a pretty nice little niche you have there… Yes, yes it is. As such, we invite the readers, those community members whom we serve, to contribute their own happenings, photos, upcoming events and more – all with the notion that, at no cost to them, they can be a part of our next publication. Parents, teachers, coaches and scouting leaders are all welcome to participate in publicizing those individual

School District recently completed “I Am” poems. Students focused on their individual personality traits, interests and curiosities. Each poem was

three stanzas and had to include one repeating line that began with “I Am…” The children also drew colorful and exaggerated caricatures of themselves.
To help her World Language students improve their speaking skills, Spanish teacher Janice Kincaid recently brought in a special guest to meet her seventh-grade students at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District. The final exam includes a speaking section, in which students have to carry on conversations in Spanish on three different topics. Daniel Annunziato, who
graduated from Berner in 2015 after two years of Spanish instruction with Ms. Kincaid, returned to help the students practice for their final. He worked with small groups on fluency. Daniel consistently had the highest average in his class and was also the recipient of Philip A. Fulvi Love of Language Award. During a project in which students had to research charities that
work with either Hispanic communities or Spanishspeaking countries, he was able to personally connect with the director of an organization based in South Florida for his presentation. “He is somebody that the students can look up to,” Ms. Kincaid said. “It’s motivating for them as he’s only recently been through the same process.”

Science Fair Electricity, sound and the laws of motion were just some of the topics that young scientists explored at McKenna Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. Fifthgraders in Maggie Rago’s class recently completed science experiments, and then presented their findings to their peers. Every student had to come up with a question about the world they wanted answered and form a hypothesis. Ms. Rago said
students were not judged on whether or not their predictions were correct, but rather on the quality of their experiments and adherence to the scientific method. Students had six weeks to conduct their experiments and create presentation boards. They shared their findings with their classmates and also to McKenna’s fourth-graders in a science fair setting. One School, One Book Initiative
WOMEN’S CLUB WINNERS - The Woman’s Club of Massapequa awarded two monetary scholarships to Massapequa High School Seniors, Nicole Dahlquist and Jessica Fehn. Del Genovese is the Chair of the Child Welfare Department of the Woman’s Club of Massapequa. One of the scholarship awards was donated by Rowan Caddoo Brooks.
The One School, One Book initiative at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District touches all subject areas, including physical education which recently hosted a walkathon fundraiser. It was the culminating event of this year’s study of Shelley Pearsall’s book “The Seventh Most Important Thing.” Every student and staff member received a copy of the book, and numerous activities
and classroom discussions were held throughout the year, including a visit by the author in December. During physical education classes on May 31st and June 1st, students walked for about a halfhour and also were able to make a $586 donation to the Massapequa-based Yes Community Counseling Center. Teacher Ed Hoffman said that each year the school chooses an organization that fits into the theme of the
respective book. The main character in “The Seventh Most Important Thing” is a young man who needs guidance and counseling to make good decisions. Mr. Hoffman added that students at Berner learn the value of giving back to their community and have many opportunities to do so through fundraisers, charitable drives or their participation in servicebased clubs.

Students from two schools in the Massapequa School District recently came together to promote reading by collecting hundreds of books for a local nonprofit organization. The Helping Hands club at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus hosted its annual book drive to benefit the Book Fairies. The Long Island-based nonprofit organization distributes books to people in need throughout the
metropolitan area to nurture a love of reading. Ninth-graders created posters and made announcements in their homeroom classes seeking gently used books for readers of all ages. Students in the Community Career Connections program at the high school’s main campus also supported the cause and the combined effort generated about 700 books. Students from the two schools met with each

Berner Middle School students, through their recent participation in a Breakout EDU game, experienced the obstacles faced by many slaves who sought freedom in the North via the Underground Railroad. Librarians Julie Rogers and Laurie MartucciWalsh, together with seventh-grade social studies teacher Danielle Kennedy, created the game using the breakout kits that have quickly become a popular learning tool in the Massapequa School District. Each team was assigned the identity of a fugitive slave, such
as Henry “Box” Brown, William and Ellen Craft, Harriet Jacobs and Robert Smalls, who are known for their daring attempts at freedom and subsequent success as free individuals. Students were challenged to work together to navigate a series of obstacles and clues to open five different types of locks. Opening each lock required understanding of the precepts, terms and vocabulary associated with the lesson. Stops along their journeys offered challenging clues which led them to meet either their conductor, a compassionate
sympathizer, or, if not careful, a slave catcher intent on reaping a handsome reward for their capture and return. When the group evaded capture, they were tasked with mapping their route on the Underground Railroad and completing their passage north. The removal of all locks was symbolic of the fugitive slaves breaking free from the bonds of slavery. Inside each box, students found a copy of the official U.S. order freeing the slaves, a short biography of the person they were running for and a prize awarded by their teacher.
Summer Programs Registration is open for the Massapequa School District’s summer programs, which includes recreation, sports camps and fine arts courses. Summer Recreation will be held for five weeks beginning Monday, July 10th. The elementary program is for students entering kindergarten through sixth grade in September. It will be held from from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at each elementary school. Activities include outdoor games, arts and crafts, sports, movies and weekly field trips. The program concludes with a talent show and art exhibit on Aug. 11th. The cost is $105 per week or $420 for the full program, with discounts for multiple children in a family. The teen center program
is for students entering seventh and eighth grade and will be held at the Ames Campus on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. There will be a game room, sports, arts and crafts center, and weekly field trips. The cost is $85 per week or $335 for the full program. Sports Camps begin the week of June 26th with baseball, boys soccer and speed, agility and conditioning. Other weeklong camps to follow in July include girls and boys basketball, cheerleading, field hockey, football, golf, gymnastics, girls and boys lacrosse, softball, girls and boys volleyball and wrestling. The Summer Fine Arts program, which begins on July 10th, features a variety of classes in
instrumental music, theater and the visual arts taught by Massapequa School District teachers. A new class in Celtic fiddling compliments existing popular courses such as acoustic guitar, iPad Claymation, musical theater and many more. All camps run either one or two weeks, and conclude with an informal performance or exhibit. Programs are open only to students living within the district’s boundaries. Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School hosted a Memorial Day program on May 25th. Guests included veterans, board of education members, district administrators and local elected officials. The band and orchestra played patriotic songs
including “Appalachian Hymn,” “America the Beautiful,” “The StarSpangled Banner,” “Taps” and “You’re a Grand Old Flag.” Student presenters from fourth through sixth grade spoke about the history and meaning of Memorial Day, President John F. Kennedy’s

Oyster Bay Town residents can expect some upgrades at Town pools this summer, according to Town Councilwoman Michele M. Johnson. “As a mother with young children, I appreciate the opportunity our pools bring for our children to recreate and keep cool all summer long,” Councilwoman Johnson said. “Spending a day at one of our Town pools provides a wonderful way to connect with family and friends while enjoying the amenities provided at our top-rate facilities.” Residents visiting our community pools, including Marjorie R. Post
in Massapequa, SyossetWoodbury, Bethpage, and Plainview-Old Bethpage, will see some enhancements as we prepare for the swimming season,” Councilwoman Johnson said. “Upgrades will include new chairs throughout all facilities, both lounge chairs and stackable dining chairs.” The Councilwoman further noted that all community pool locations will be receiving new accessories to assist those looking to shield from the sun. “All pool decks will be receiving 50x20 foot cantilever sun shades, which will allow those
looking for a break from the sun to enjoy some relaxing time in one of our new lounge chairs,” Councilwoman Johnson said. Councilwoman Johnson noted that pools will be open from June 24th through Labor Day. Registration for season memberships is currently underway. Starting June 24, registration will take place during normal hours of operation. Spring Art Show Young artists from Birch Lane and Fairfield elementary schools in the Massapequa School District had their work selected for an art show at the Massapequa Perk coffee house.
This annual spring show features the work of approximately 20 students from each school in first through sixth grade. The students completed their various drawings and paintings under the
direction of teachers Melinda Wolfe-Gibbons and Nicole Hassell at Birch Lane and Dorothy Veltre at Fairfield. The art show runs through June 15th.
To review for their endof-the-year social studies summative assessment, sixth-graders in Lisa Dorsa’s class at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District used tools available on their Chromebooks. The students reviewed Google Slide presentations
they created throughout the year on ancient civilizations including Greece, Rome, Egypt and Mesopotamia. Ms. Dorsa said these slide shows, which incorporate text, pictures, maps and short videos helps “bring them into civilizations” and understand history from

Mural Completion Making Committee of administrators, teachers, students and parents narrowed the 50 submissions down to 10 finalists. The student body then voted on the design created by Jaclyn Portogallo. Over the last several months, students have been sketching and painting under the supervision of art teacher Suzanne Perakakis. In addition to Jaclyn, students who contributed their talents were Olivia Bembenek, Sienna Bitetto, Morgan Frederick, Zach Gerstenfeld, Juliette Gonsor, Alyssa Iavarone,
Nicole Maggio and Melissa Pollich. Jaclyn said that the blue-and-gold mural came out even better than she envisioned and is proud to make a contribution to the school that will remain for a long time. “The mural is brilliant and it looks amazing,” added Principal Jordan McCaw. “Jaclyn’s design truly captured what it means to be a Massapequa Chief. As people come into our school, including our new students each year, they will see this and understand what we are all about.”
ARTWORK SHOWCASE - Grace Pre-K students recently hosted an Art Show where students had a chance to show teachers, parents and relatives their work. These young artists were so proud of their masterpieces on display. In class, the students were introduced to van Gogh, Monet, Picasso and more. They learned about the artists and their styles of paintings.
STREET FAIR A SUCCESS - The Massapequa Chamber of Commerce recently held its 5th annual Street Fair on Sunday, June 4th. It was a beautiful day attended by over 10,000 people, who shopped, ate and enjoyed live music. The grand marshal was Glenn Kearney, Massapequa resident and member of the Massapequa Auxiliary Police. First-graders at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District participated in a reading comprehension exercise called “What Makes You Say That?” The students looked at several different pieces of artwork and wrote down their
thoughts. It taught them that when they analyze a reading passage, they have to cite evidence from the text to back up their arguments. Teacher Kim Kelly adopted this strategy after attending the Project Zero Classroom training at Harvard University,
