Victory Games Competition

ecently, 58 Athletes from Massapequa competed in the Victory Games at Mitchell Field. Amanda Dunn was among them and was cheered on by students and teachers from McKenna. Massapequa School districted loaded buses on a hot day sent 200 students to cheer on their fellow classmates. What an amazing thing to witness a sea of blue and gold! Amanda took home 6 medals - 2 gold, 3 silver and a bronze.

Watching From The Wings By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As I write this column, this coming weekend will mark the first dance recital in nearly 20 years at my studio that I will not be a part of. For the first time, I will have the pleasure of viewing the entire three-hour extravaganza from the comfort of my very own auditorium seat. Sure beats racing back and forth between numbers and quick changes to stand – more like hover – near the door, hoping to catch a glimpse of three minutes or so... and then hightailing it backstage in time to line up for my own dance! But seating arrangements aside, there will of course

be that wistful, bittersweet sensation that, just last year (and nearly two thirds of my life before that) that used to be me up on stage, decked out in full costume, makeup, hair… the whole deal. (Oh, and glitter. Can’t forget glitter.) As with any transition, it is often met with mixed emotions – that sense of knowing when the time has come to move on, yet sadness that you will be leaving your comfort zone of people and places and things you have grown to expect as part of your life. Time does move on, things do change; and, in the end, you eventually grow used to the sometimes subtle, sometimes drastic alterations

to “life as you know it.” It’s the same with graduations, with changes in residence or job – everything requires a period of adjustment. And then, without realizing it, there comes a day when you take a step back and realize that this has become the new norm. So here’s to that new norm, to sitting in the audience and being able to truly appreciate all the hard work and dedication that has gone into creating the spectacle before me. And if – no, when – I become nostalgic for my own time in the spotlight, I will call upon the 20 years of fond memories I was fortunate to be a part of... and smile.

Unqua Elementary School students met their guardian angels — the students and staff at Milton Terrace South Elementary School in Ballston Spa, NY — during a 30-minute videoconference aimed at expressing their appreciation for the more than $1,500 in clothes and gift cards their upstate friends donated to the district’s Sandy victims. The Massapequa School District was “adopted” by Milton Terrace South through the Schools Helping Schools program, launched by the New York State Council of School Superintendents as a way for districts to help other districts devastated by Sandy. Unqua students were tickled to see the entire Milton Terrace South student body for the first time and thank them for rallying together to help their recovery, and Milton Terrace South students were equally thrilled to gain a better understanding of how the storm impacted their Massapequa peers and how their generosity helped them get through this

difficult time. “This was a great healing process for our students and a powerful way to bring to life the people that showed so much care and concern for them,” said Unqua Principal Deanna Catapano. During a question and answer format, students explained where they were when the storm hit, the damage their homes incurred, where they had to evacuate to and the stress they and their families felt throughout the horrifying ordeal. At one point, Unqua students waved American flags and held guardian angel figures for everyone at Milton Terrace South to see. Nearly 350 students from Massapequa School District were initially displaced because of Sandy, according to district officials. About 140 are not yet back in their homes. Milton Terrace South reached out to the district after conducting numerous fundraisers such as a “Taste of Milton Terrace South” luncheon and a school-wide “Have a Heart” clothing and gift card drive, which garnered overwhelming

results. “Their generosity was truly above and beyond what we could have imagined,” said Dr. Thomas Fasano, assistant to the superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, who worked closely with Milton Terrace South on the delivery of their donations. “This videoconference was the perfect way for students at both schools to learn from a very difficult situation.” The videoconference came on the heels of another Sandy-related event called “Massapequa Breathes.” This free, family-fun event gave residents devastated by Sandy the opportunity to enjoy an afternoon filled with food, entertainment and goods from local vendors. Sponsored by Massapequa YES Community Counseling Services, the Massapequa School District, the Massapequa PTA Council and the Chamber of Commerce, the event also acknowledged many people in the community who helped residents recover.

Hurricane Sandy’s impact is still being felt.

WELLNESS RUN - The Birch Lane Wellness Run and Health Fair was recently held. There were over 300 participants that attended the event. The day kicked off with a 1K Fun Run that was bordered by over 75 Varsity Athletes cheering on the children as they competed in their Fun. Next was the 3K Run that was routed through the streets of Massapequa. As the runners returned home, they were escorted to the upper gym where over 13 varsity sports held clinic stations. Children and adults got to try some of their favorite sports while being introduced to many new ones as well.

Catholic Health Services (CHS) has named Alan D. Guerci, MD, president and chief executive officer (CEO), effective July 1st. He is currently executive vice president for CHS and president and CEO of CHS’s St. Francis Hospital, Mercy Medical Center and St. Joseph Hospital. Dr. Guerci succeeds Richard J.J. Sullivan, Jr., who has been serving as the system’s CEO on a voluntary basis since December 2012, in addition to his ongoing duties as chairman of CHS’s Board of Directors. “Dr. Guerci brings more than 20 years of service to CHS and has established himself in the Long Island community as a highly respected physician and

Melanie Sheehan loves sitcoms, all sitcoms from every era, and hopes to one day write and produce them. The aspiration may seem a bit out of character for the valedictorian of Massapequa High School, who took studying her hardest and competing as captain of the varsity swimming and diving team very seriously. But this soon-to-be Fordham University freshman finds the skill it takes to develop brilliant, quick-witted shows that rub against the grain of American society intriguing. She

plans on studying English and Communication & Media Studies, so she can ultimately “make a difference through writing,” she said. “I believe I will attain my goals at Fordham because the school puts such a strong emphasis on social mindedness.” Melanie came to Massapequa Schools after graduating eighth grade at St. William the Abbot in Seaford. As a new, rather shy ninth-grader, she was thankful for her classmates and the swim team for making her feel welcome. In fact, the long bus rides to and from Brentwood where the team practiced every day, helped her forge great social bonds. In addition to becoming the class valedictorian, Melanie was a finalist in the National Merit Scholarship program, which placed her among the top one percent of the most-promising students in the nation. She also was a copy editor for the school newspaper, “The

Chief”, played bass clarinet in marching band and is working towards her Gold Award, Girl Scouts’ highest honor. She is an Advanced Placement Scholar and member of National Honor Society.
