Increasing and organizing that white matter, which reading to youngsters facilitates, increases the brain’s functionality and ability to learn. While the study noted the value of reading to children age five and younger, it also showed how children who spent an average of two hours a day playing on screens were adversely affected by that behavior. In images of such children’s brains, white matter was considerably underdeveloped and disorganized, which can contribute to slow processing and learning difficulties.

Recent studies from the Reading & Literacy Discovery Center of Cincinnati’s Children’s Hospital were the first provide neurobiological evidence of the potential benefits of reading to children age five and younger and the potential detriments of screen time on the development of such youngsters’ brains. In 2010, Eileen began volunteering, offering free haircuts to people in need. Eileen felt so overjoyed by helping others look and feel beautiful for free while working within various types of socio economic communities, that she eventually began her very own traveling salon. With its catchy slogan, Where Style Comes To You, Scanlon’s Traveling Salon now serves an abundance of people across Long Island.

She always travels to her customers so they can enjoy her services in the comfort of their home or living space. Her goal is to provide each and every one of her clients with a warm, happy, positive and empathetic experience before, during and after each visit. She also incorporates her love of social justice and advocacy into her business practice by using only vegan products.

During these trying times when only essential businesses are operating, Eileen has shifted her focus to helping the homless community, a group she feels extremely passionate for. She has been bringing homeless individuals food, clothes, blankets, shoes, etc. to help them feel loved and cared for. Although she actively helps homless people throughout Long Island, she focuses a lot in East Meadow, a community she finds to have a large homeless population. “I’m one person trying desperately to make a difference,” says Eileen. “The ‘not in my backyard’ mentality needs to be a thing of the past!” Her clients, along with local restaurants have donated food, gently used clothes, blankets, shoes and more for her to distribute. The homeless community needs attention and assistance and together we can give them the help they need. One way we can start is by donating food, clothes, shoes, blankets, socks or any other important items to Eileen for her to distribute. She visits homeless individuals twice a day and any donations received will be handed out to those in need. Additionally, Eileen is looking for a donation of a mini-bus (can be used). This bus would be used for her non-profit traveling salon and her outreach work for the homeless. If you or someone you know can make this kind of donation, please reach out to Eileen directly. The History Of Flag Day

Even though the Fourth of July, a holiday in which the flag is prominently and proudly displayed, had long been celebrated as the birthday of the United States, Cigrand wanted a holiday that would focus specifically on the flag in all its glory. June 14 was selected because it marked the anniversary of the official adoption of the first flag. Cigrand led his school in the first formal observance of the holiday, and throughout his life continued to advocate for respect of the flag. Various other organizations liked the idea of a day to honor the flag, including the State Board of Education of New York, the Betsy Ross House and the New York Society of the Sons of the Revolution. Yet, it wasn’t until May 30, 1916, that Flag Day was officially established by presidential proclamation by President Woodrow Wilson. Still, it would take another 33 years for President Truman to sign an Act of Congress designating June 14 as the

official National Flag Day, which he did on August 3, 1949. Americans can honor the flag by displaying it on Flag Day. Here’s how to display the flag properly, courtesy of Military.com. • The flag should be free of any obstructions, such as power lines or tree limbs. • If displayed with other flags, Old Glory should be at the top-most point or in the center of a horizontal array of flags. • If the flag is displayed on its side, the blue field should be to the left. • The flag should be raised in the morning at a residence or business and taken down at night. The only exception to the flag being out at night is if it’s illuminated. • Flags can be repaired. However, if a flag is tattered, it can be removed and brought to a local VFW hall to be properly disposed of. Flag Day honors the Stars and Stripes, a symbol of the great American nation.

When the novel coronavirus COVID-19 struck the world at the end of 2019, few people anticipated just how much the virus would upend daily life in the months to come. Because there currently is no cure or standardized treatment for the disease, the best course of action has involved maintaining social distance to help cut down on the rate of spread. Social distancing has changed the way the public shops, interacts socially with friends and family members and attends school. For the thousands of students comprising the class of 2020, social distancing also changes how they will graduate. Graduation decisions are something high schools and colleges have grappled with in the face of social distancing. Graduation has become a modify-asyou-go model in many towns and cities. In some instances, all in-person ceremonies have been restricted and virtualonly graduations will take place. For example, New Jersey’s Department of Education was only allowing virtual graduation events as graduation season approached. Other parts of the

country have been approaching graduation plans in various ways. The Tucson Unified School District postponed its graduation ceremonies to late June rather than canceling them altogether. Schools in Spotsylvania and Fauquier Counties in Virginia held modified versions of in-person ceremonies in May, which limited the number of family members in attendance and required relatives to hand out diplomas as a safety precaution. Students in Cherry Creek School District in Colorado found out they will have a modified inperson, students-only graduation ceremony in July. Relatives can watch the ceremony on a live stream. The Army will proceed with this year’s graduation ceremony at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in June, with President Donald Trump giving the commencement speech for cadets. The 1,000 cadets will return to campus to attend the ceremony, which will include procession changes and other social distancing modifications in line with current health requirements. Whether a school hosts a graduation ceremony in-person

or not, families can organize their own at-home graduations. All relatives who are graduating (whether from high school, college or even those moving up from fifth grade to middle school and eighth grade to high school) can participate. Graduation ceremonies are a tradition that dates back to the first high schools and universities. While many aspects of graduation ceremonies have evolved over the years, the graduation cap has remained a hallmark of such ceremonies. Graduation caps are one of the most visible aspects of graduation dress. Many scholars believe the mortarboard style cap graduates don was developed from the biretta, a similar-looking Italian hat worn by Roman Catholic clergy. In the 12th and 13th centuries, students and teachers typically wore

clerical clothing because the church was highly influential at this time. Medieval universities helped inspire academic dress, including the familiar graduation cap. Mortarboards are shaped like a square, perhaps to give them a scholarly appearance like a book or to represent the shape of a quad on the campus of England’s Oxford University, where many graduation dress customs are believed to have originated. Others theorize that the mortarboard, which is named after the flat board used by bricklayers and masons,

represents the skill of a master workman. Many graduation caps were initially black or gray. According to the graduation information site Graduation Source, when color photography became the norm in the 20th century, schools began to use gowns and caps in different shades because they would show up in photographs. Schools often coordinate caps and gowns so their colors reflect their official school colors. While certain degrees warrant different styles of gown, cowls and hoods, mortarboard caps are relatively standard. In addition to the cap, there is a single button at the top. Tassels hang from these buttons. At commencement, tassels are traditionally worn on the right side of the cap and then moved to the left once graduates receive their diplomas. Graduation caps are part of the larger scope of academic dress that comprises school traditions. Millions of graduates across the globe will don their caps and toss them into the air later in celebration of their hard work.

According to the American Gap Year Association, a gap year is defined as an experimental semester or full academic year taken between high school and college in order to deepen practical, professional and personal awareness.

Massapequa Seniors Committed To A Memorable Year

With traditional celebratory activities drastically altered for Massapequa High School’s 570 seniors, the Class of 2020 is finding new ways to recognize their individual and collective achievements during the COVID-19 pandemic. Front doors and porches throughout the community were decked out in blue and gold as seniors were encouraged to create spirit doors at their homes. They chose items that represented their high school careers including pictures, sports jerseys, the Massapequa “M” and more. Many students also looked ahead by including the logos of the colleges they will attend in the fall. The Adopt a Chief Facebook page allows members of the community to show their support and appreciation for Massapequa’s seniors. Senior class adviser Nicole Zappulla said that once a parent posts about his or her child, that student can be “adopted.” The adopters, which include community members, current and retired teachers, alumni and local organization such as the Girl Scouts and youth

baseball leagues, then get small gifts for the student. Ms. Zappulla noted that two Instagram pages were created to celebrated the senior class. One page, @classof2020chiefs, showcases the decorated spirit doors while the other, @massapequaseniors, highlights the students’ college plans. Senior class president Alex Lawless said that he and his fellow officers are constantly looking for ideas to continue the spirit of senior year. They receive input from their fellow seniors and share ideas with Ms. Zappulla and administration. “We are all trying to stay positive and optimistic and looking at how we can adjust our senior year experience to make it memorable,” he said. “Everyone is a little upset about the senior events being changed but everyone acknowledges this is an important sacrifice we have to make to keep the population healthy.” Alex added that the class officers take seriously their responsibility as elected representatives to make sure all seniors are heard. One near unanimous wish is to have a physical graduation,

which is being planned for early August at Hofstra University if gatherings are permitted then. The initial date for graduation, June 22, will instead feature a senior car parade from Berner Middle School to the high school. Student Government President Alex Carmenaty said that there is a strong bond among the Class of 2020 and that unity transcends their different high school experiences. Those unifying moments have come throughout their time together since students from six elementary schools became one group at Berner Middle School. For Alex, being the play-by-play announcer for multiple sports teams formed a strong connection between himself and Massapequa’s athletes. He understands the pain they felt losing their final season before graduation, and used his personal podcast to give athletes a place to reflect on their time wearing the blue and gold. A mutual respect for each other, he said, is what defines the Class of 2020.

Unqua Students Spread Kindness The Kindness Club at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District is on a mission to help people on Long Island and around the world. While several of the group’s charitable initiatives have been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, students remain committed to charity. Library media specialist Melinda Alford started the club earlier this year for fourth and fifth graders. The goal was to meet four times in the spring to create projects that would benefit various organizations, using funding from a grant she won from the Long Island School Media Association.

A group of 20 students met in early March to make gift bags for the John’s Place homeless shelter in Greenport. The second meeting was planned to make dog and cat toys to be donated to an animal shelter and the third and fourth meetings were planned to make Kenyan bead bracelets and develop a school-wide fundraiser for Reason2Smile. With the pandemic halting those projects, the remaining money from the grant was donated to Reason2Smile, which supports a school in Kenya. Ms. Alford received premade Kenyan bead bracelets, mailing two to each club member. She asked that they keep one

and give the other away. “I asked that when they wore their bracelet, to please do something kind for someone else,” Ms. Alford said. “It certainly has given my students a reason to smile and to share their kindness with others.” Student Michael Verdi gave his second bracelet to his sister. Among his recent acts of kindness include helping his sister with homework, cooking lunch and working with his grandmother to fix her deck. Liam St. George offers to water the plants at his house daily and help a child who fell off his bike a park.

Massapequa Students Earn High Marks On German Exam

In recognition of their strong performance on the 2020 National German Exam, 23 students from Massapequa High School received awards from the American Association of Teachers of German. Three ninth graders at the Ames Campus, who are in the Level 2 German class, were recognized including Jacob Bass who earned a silver medal and Lily DiBenedetto and Michael Zanone who received achievement awards. At Massapequa High

School’s main campus, honorees in the Level 3 German class included silver medal winners Lucas Marsh, Matthew McAuley and Kathleen Tumminello, bronze medal winners Liam De Vos and Jason Johnson, and achievement award recipients Nicole Kilkenny, Nicholas Monty and Jonathan Yahner.
