Angels Revisited And now, a selection from the archives, published June 2008... This past Memorial Day weekend, the Navy’s Blue Angels returned to the Island for their annual turn as one of the Jones Beach Air Show’s featured attractions. Even though it’s just a short drive down Ocean Parkway, my family and I have never managed to get out there to witness the spectacle up close and in person. Too much traffic, too many people, too much of a hassle… This year, though, I realized that the planes would be practicing right around the corner at Republic Airport during the week leading up to the show. And so, on Friday afternoon, a friend and I made a point of taking a ride down to the Airport Plaza shopping center to see if we could catch a glimpse. A glimpse? Try witnessing all six of the planes whizzing overhead and whoknows-what speed, close enough so that we could read the numbers on them! What a sight!

If only I had my camera, I thought. Well, after that close call, I decided to make it my mission to get a shot of them ﬂying to or from the air show over the weekend, since I knew they would cross over my house on their ﬂight down to the beach. Saturday afternoon, as I heard them approach, I ran out with my camera – only to catch the cloud of dust they had left in their wake. Okay, I thought, I’ll just wait here on the deck – listening to the simulcast on the radio – until I hear them wrapping up their routine. Then, all I have to do is aim my camera for the sky and I can’t miss them! Easier said than done. I saw them coming, all right. The problem was it’s a little hard to frame something moving at hundreds of miles an hour in your camera lens before it’s passed you by. I managed to snap one shot as they approached, which, after the camera’s natural delay, resulted in a rather fuzzy shot of the planes whizzing right out of the frame. There’s always tomorrow, I thought. The next morning, I drove

down to the local town beach and waited, poised for the approach. Sure enough, I saw the HC-130 slowly making its way south, a sure sign that the six Blue Angels were not far behind. And then… out of the clouds they came – all six, flying in perfect formation. And again, I was only able to get just one shot before I lost track of the formation. I followed their flight into the distance, where I was actually able to view most of the theatrics which followed, albeit from a great distance. I imagine it was much better up close, but hey – not a bad seat on my beach either! I must have stood there for a solid 30 minutes, watching the back and forth, up and down, looping motion of the jets, until at last, they began their return trip to Republic. This time, I got it. One...two… three shots as they came closer and closer – still a little blurred, but sharp against the clear blue sky. Finally! As they flew off into the distance, I heard one bystander mumble, “There they go – our tax dollars at work.” But she was smiling.

Healing Hearts

The American Heart Association’s 7th annual Healing Heart 5K Run/ Walk was held on Sunday, May 15th, on the property of the beautiful Pugliese Vineyards in the heart of the Long Island wine country in Cutchogue. On the windy but sunny day, close to 500 runners, walkers and spectators came out to participate in the much anticipated event. Before the race, American Heart Association Long Island Volunteer, Consuelo Vanderbilt Costin presented awards to the top local fundraiser, Mary Grady and the East End Cardiology Team for winning the Ralph Pugliese Most Spirited Team Award. After the

race those in attendance were then treated to music by the Rum Hill Rockers. A health expo was also available during the event and was open to all participants. The American Heart Ride was held on Saturday, May 21st, starting at Rotations Bicycle Center in Southampton. Riders then rode 27, 59, or 100 miles through the Heart of the Hamptons. The Heart Ride was be an unforgettable way for riders to experience the beautiful scenery of the Hamptons of Long Island, the beaches, the mansions and the farmlands. After the ride the riders were treated to an amazing barbeque, music and massages provided by Southampton Hospital

Wellness Center. The Healing Heart 5K and the American Heart Ride hopes to raise awareness that heart disease is the number one killer of men and women across the country and here on Long Island. These events create a culture of health and physical activity, giving Long Islanders the opportunity to participate in heart healthy activities. East End Cardiology and Bridgehampton National Bank. New Recycling Program The Town of Oyster Bay will begin hosting a weekly cardboard recycling drop-off program at three convenient Town locations. Under this new program, spearheaded and organized by Town Councilmembers Rebecca M. Alesia and Anthony D. Macagnone, residents will be able to drop off unwanted cardboard to be recycled on Saturday mornings, beginning June 4th. “This new program will not only generate less solid waste for the Town, but recycling cardboard also reduces the demand for new paper, thereby saving trees and decreasing the amount

of pollution generated in new paper production,” Councilwoman Alesia said. Councilwoman Alesia went on to note that the three locations for drop-off each week are as follows: Town Hall South, 977 Hicksville Road in Massapequa, the Town of Oyster Bay Department of Public Works facility, 150 Miller Place, Syosset, and the Lake Avenue Highway Yard, Oyster Bay. Drop off will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Under this new drop-off program, the following can be recycled: corrugated and paperboard, also known as boxboard. Both types of cardboard are acceptable. Common types

of corrugated boxes are those used for moving and shipping, appliances, electronics, office paper, etc. Paperboard is commonly used for cereal and other food boxes, shoe boxes, soda and beverage cartons, tissue boxes, department store gift boxes, etc. “The Town of Oyster Bay is committed to providing high quality, environmentally sound sanitation and recycling services,” Councilman Macagnone stated. “By recycling cardboard, the Town is protecting the environment and saving tax dollars.”
