Longevity in marriage is something to be celebrated. Couples who reach fiftieth and sixtieth wedding anniversaries often commemorate those anniversaries with big parties. But there are some around the world who would consider golden anniversary celebrants to still be newlyweds. In December 2015, Karam Chand, 110, and his wife, Kartari Chand, 103, from Bradford, West Yorkshire (originally from India), celebrated their 90th wedding anniversary, becoming the world’s longest-betrothed couple. In America, John and Ann Betar, ages 104 and 100, respectively, have been married 83 years as of 2016. The couple eloped in 1932. They have been named one of America’s longest-married couples by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter.

Principals Named The Massapequa School District Board of Education appointed a pair of elementary principals for the 2019-20 school year. Dr. Kristi Gerhard, the assistant principal at Fairfield Elementary School for the past four years, will become the building’s principal. She is replacing Lori Dano, who is retiring at the end of the school year. Before coming to Massapequa, Dr.

Gerhard was a fifth grade teacher and a second and fourth grade English as a New Language teacher in the Long Beach School District, as well as prekindergarten teacher in Farmingdale. She holds a bachelor’s degree in education and interdisciplinary studies from Hofstra University, a master’s degree in teaching English as a second language from St. John’s University, an

advanced certificate in school building and school district leadership from St. John’s and a doctorate in instructional leadership from St. John’s. The district will welcome Dr. Michael Yannucci as the new principal of Lockhart Elementary School, replacing the retiring Stephen Scarallo. Dr. Yannucci has been an elementary assistant principal in the PlainviewOld Bethpage School

District for four years. Prior to that, he worked in the Rocky Point School District as an elementary reading teacher and a coordinator of English language arts, reading, library media and art. Dr. Yannucci holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from SUNY Oneonta, a master’s degree in childhood education and literacy from C.W. Post, an advanced certificate in educational

administration from the College of St. Rose and a doctorate in educational administration, leadership and technology from Dowling College. He has been an adjunct professor for educator graduate courses at Concordia College and an adjunct professor at Suffolk County Community College, and has presented at numerous conferences.

New Ground is a non-profit organization that helps to break the cycle of homelessness right here in Nassau and Suffolk counties. This organization began all from the vision of an educator that was committed to providing a safe haven for those living in poverty. This educator saw that shelters were only providing a short-term fix to a problem that needed a real, lasting solution. After envisioning an organization that provided a holistic suite of support services while empowering participants to help themselves, she founded New Ground in 1991 to do just that.

Their Long Term Housing Program combines affordable housing with New Ground’s intensive services. Currently this includes a home in Huntington with two homeless Veteran families, a home in Bethpage under renovations and plans to add more housing units. For 3-5 years, New Ground provides all the needed educational, vocational and counseling services to the family members living in this housing, as well as basic needs and general support. Residents also take time with a social worker and put together a plan of how they can reach their goals. All residents pay an affordable rent and although New Ground assists them with various costs and hurdles they may face, they truly get the feeling of being a responsible homeowner.

New Ground, based in Levittown, offers Veterans and families the following main programs to truly help them conquer homelessness: their Long Term Housing Program, their JumpStart Program and their Veterans Program. Their services include Adult Workshops, Career Development, Education Advocacy, Education Assistance, Financial Literacy, Reading All-Stars, Special Memories and Tutoring.

A primary social worker is assigned to all families in both of these programs once they start with the organization. New Ground social

workers provide guidance, resources and assistance to the families in various areas. The New Ground Veterans Program is another very important part to their organization. Homeless Veterans can get placed in reduced cost housing and be provided with intensive social work and education services by New Ground to assist them with achieving goals in the areas of employment, financial literacy, education, career development, parenting, basic life skills, education advocacy and more. In 2016 their services were expanded so they can serve an even greater number of Veteran households. Through collaboration with the Northport VA Center, New Ground began offering their programs to over 400 homeless Veteran households in their Veteran Affairs Supportive Housing Program. Since opening their doors, New Ground has seen over 80% of the families they have served “graduate” from their programs self sufficient and into permanent stable housing. New Ground empowers children, parents and Veterans to achieve their goals so that they can secure a brighter future for generations to come! New Ground is a huge help to the homeless community on Long Island and is there for those in need. A group of students from Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus got a first-hand look at the environmental impacts of pollution when they went out on the water with Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. in early April. More than 30 members of the Helping Hands Club, a student community service organization, joined the environmental group for a spring cleanup of the Great South Bay. The day began with a 40-minute lesson at the S.P.L.A.S.H. headquarters in Freeport about how pollution on Long Island over the past 50 years has negatively affected the environment, and future impacts if there is not a change. Students suited up in lifejackets and work gloves, then got on a boat and took a short ride to an island in

the bay. They got to work right away, with many students saying they could not believe how much trash was on just one little island. After filling up many garbage bags, along with collecting large items such as pieces of foam and crates, the ninth graders got back on the boat and traveled to a marina to properly dispose of the trash. “I always want to help out when I can,” Colin Mushorn said. “The ocean is very important to me and it’s important to keep it clean.” Colin said he was very impressed by the passion that Operation S.P.L.A.S.H members have for their environment. Lindsey Black noted that this was her first time participating in a cleanup project of this magnitude.

She said it opened her eyes to a real problem but also showed her how people can make a positive difference. Advisers Alyssa Levine and Erin Mosier said the purpose of the trip was to educate students about how debris affects the ecosystems, how to prevent pollution and how they can make an impact in their own community. “Living in Massapequa, many students go out on boats and down to the beach, so this is a project that has a big impact on their lives as residents of the South Shore,” Ms. Mosier said. “At the end of the day, students were thankful for the experience and said that they want to become more involved with Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. and cleaning up Long Island.”

Students, Veterans Mark Memorial Day red, white and blue. William Colfer, from VFW Post 7763 in Massapequa Park, said Memorial Day is the most solemn day of the year for veterans because that is when they pay tribute to their comrades who lost their lives in combat. He asked the fourth and fifth grade students in attendance to remember the sacrifices that many people have made in the name of freedom. Assistant to the Superintendent Diana Haanraadts said that the best way that children can show appreciation to veterans is to become good citizens. She called on them to treat everyone with kindness and respect, to lift others up

and to avoid letting their difference divide them. “That’s what it means to be an American citizen and to honor the all the people who have gone before us in the military,” she said. “Live in a way that shows that we respect what they’ve done for us.” Principal Lori Dano and Assistant Principal Dr. Kristi Gerhard reminded students that Memorial Day is not about barbecue and a day off from school, but a chance to pay tribute to the people who have defended their country. “These are the people who have fought to keep us safe and free,” Dr. Gerhard said. “These are the people who have lost friends in wars. We will respect them.”

First graders are raising baby chicks at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, an annual spring activity that helps children learn about animal life cycles. Several weeks ago, each first grade class received eggs from a farm, which were then placed in an

incubator. During the 21day incubation period, students learned many facts about the development of baby chickens. They also performed experiments with store-bought eggs, such as an egg strength test. Just before Memorial Day, the eggs hatched. Teacher Danielle DiAlto

The true meaning of Memorial Day was the focus of a ceremony at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District on May 23, in which students and veterans came together to honor the men and women who died serving their country. Student speakers discussed the history of Memorial Day and its many traditions such as the playing of taps, the flying of the American flag at half-staff and the national moment of remembrance. The band, under the direction of Kristin Hodulick, and the orchestra, led by Michael Molloy, performed several patriotic tunes. Students musicians were dressed in
