guessed it, “France.” So much for the “date which will live in infamy,” right? And all this was to determine who, if anyone, could explain why we began commemorating Memorial Day in the first place. Judging by the aforementioned answers, not too many history buffs among us. The best part was that most, if not all, of the interviewees were clearly high school or college age, leading to the question: what exactly are they learning in school these days? Sure, I can’t tell you the details of every historical event which occurred over the course of the last several centuries, but the basics? Those are pretty hard to forget. And when I was actually in school, studying for exams every other week and writing term papers on such topics? It would have been difficult not to retain at least something, anything.

There is a video making its rounds on the social media circuit, showcasing what can only be described as the sorry state of our education system. One after another, various beachgoers were interviewed on the shores of our very own Jones Beach over this past Memorial Day weekend, asked questions ranging from “Who did we fight in the Revolutionary War?” to “What side of the Civil War was Abraham Lincoln associated with?” to “What country attacked us at Pearl Harbor?” The answers? Some of the best gems were “France” (our opponents in the War for Independence), “The South” (50/50 shot, people) and every nation from “China” to “Russia” to “Korea” to, you

It’s a sad state of affairs when you are blissfully ignorant of your own nation’s battle for independence and how you came to enjoy such freedoms as frolicking on the beach on a “holiday” weekend, having no clue how such occasion came into fruition. Sure it’s funny and entertaining to watch as you’re scrolling through the Facebook newsfeed; but when you take a step back and realize that these are the people with whom you coexist on a daily basis, some from your own generation, it becomes pretty disconcerting. I wonder how many of these individuals grabbed their smartphones and Googled the answers following their failed interviews. For those keeping score at home: 1.) Britain, 2.) North and 3.) Japan. They may want to grab a history book and fill in the rest.

for Soldiers. “Based on the combination of an incredibly active and organized lacrosse community, as well as an impassioned group of supporters of our nation’s veterans, expanding to Long Island was the natural fit. We’re extremely fortunate to work with such an incredible team in the area and are excited to continue to support our nation’s heroes through the sport of lacrosse.” Steinhardt is taking a leave of absence from his studies at American University to concentrate his full-time efforts into expanding and developing the Shootout for Soldiers. Among the initial benefits of this was adding the Army Ranger Lead the Way Fund, Semper Fi Fund and Gary Sinise Foundation into the partnership mix. The common mission of

all four organizations is to provide financial, physical and emotional support or services to individuals that have dedicated their lives to the United States military. “We are extremely proud that, with an allvolunteer team, Shootout for Soldiers has spent less than one percent of the total fundraising dollars on expenses to organize and produce the games,” Steinhardt explained. Both the Baltimore event, to be held at the McDonogh School in Owings Mills, Maryland and the Long Island event, scheduled for the Field of Dreams Park in Massapequa, New York, start at 9 a.m. and end 24 hours later. While the game is just for fun, the score is kept continuously throughout the event between the two teams, Stars and Stripes, and in 2013, Stars won 349-336.

The sights, sounds, aromas and flavors of Greece are coming again to Hamptonites and visitors to the East End. The Hamptons Greek Festival will take place again this year, July 10th-13th, on the grounds of the newly built Greek Orthodox Church of the Hamptons. Continuing a 29 year tradition, the Festival will highlight authentic Greek dishes and pastries, Hellenic youth dance performances, and live Greek Music nightly. Thousands have indulged in the rich flavors and hearty portions of the Festival’s menu. Passing down the culinary traditions of their parents

and grandparents, the organizers of the 2014 Hamptons Greek Festival offer Greek style chicken, pastitsio, spanakopita, souvlaki, gyro and much more. Complementing the main fare are Greek pastries that were praised by Newsday who wrote that its “favorite source in Astoria doesn’t hold a candle, frankly, to the kourabiedes (butter cookies) made by the Church ladies. When it comes to both children and automobiles, driving home the message of safety is of utmost importance. Supervisor Kate Murray and the Hempstead Town Board are doing just that, announcing the start of the town’s 2014 Child Car Seat Safety Inspection Program, which will be visiting communities across the Town of Hempstead to help residents inspect the installation of their car seats, free of charge. “With warmer weather on the horizon, parents will be driving their young children to and from many exciting activities,” stated Murray. “Now is the perfect time for Town of Hempstead residents to ensure that their children are properly secured in safety seats, and we are proud to offer the lifesaving Child Car Seat Safety Program at no cost.”

This program is led by the town’s certified child passenger safety technicians, who have been trained by Safe Kids Worldwide, a global organization that seeks to prevent accidents and injuries to young children. Residents can have their child safety seat inspected and, if necessary, technicians will make adjustments. The following is a listing of car seat safety inspection dates (all held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.) by location. The Long Island Shakespeare Festival (LISF) will present free public performances of an abridged version of Shakespeare’s Henry IV, Part I when the production returns for its 14th season at Suffolk County Community College’s Ammerman Campus in Selden this summer. Performances are presented rain or shine. Shakespeare’s rousing history play features the invented character of Falstaff at the height of his rowdy and bawdy powers. The delinquent Prince Hal, the fiery Hotspur, and a host of nobles and ne’erdo-wells make for a stirring and exuberant evening of theatre where fact and fiction blend seamlessly under Shakespeare’s sure hand as he paints the portrait of a young prince’s reformation and ascent to manhood. The public is encouraged to bring a chair or blanket to one of the upcoming performances: July 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 10th, 11th and 12th at 8 p.m. outdoors (indoors if inclement weather). Cirque Du Jour The next time you wonder what your PTA does, consider this: They help teach kids how to juggle, spin plates and stilt walk among many other things, skills that help improve hand/eye coordination and fine motor skills, build self confidence and boost school performance – not to mention making kids excited about trying new things. At least that’s what the kids at Birch Lane School in Massapequa Park experienced this past week. The school’s physical education department, through a partnership with the PTA and its Arts in Education program,

brought the circus skills program Cirque du Jour to Birch Lane. The company’s oneweek curriculum called Extreme Interactive Hands Circus Skills School is designed for children of all ages. Taught by instructors who are graduates of clown college and other performing arts programs, Cirque du Jour uses age- and gradeappropriate lessons to teach kids how to juggle, stilt walk and spin plates, among other skills. The most interesting part: Kids have so much fun they don’t realize they are building their imaginations and

developing schoolspecific skills that help improve penmanship, literacy, self-esteem and storytelling. They feel very comfortable and not afraid to try what is essentially a completely new thing to them. The Cirque du Jour program was funded by Birch Lane’s PTA Arts in Education, an initiative designed to bring innovative arts and creative-based programs into the schools. These programs strengthen critical-thinking, cognitive and creative skills and build upon lessons and curriculum that are being used within the classroom.

Members of the Kids Care Club at Grace Day School held a bake sale to raise funds for those in need of housing or shelter through Habitat For Humanity. Students brought in many home-baked goods and even provided a nut-free section. Kids Care is a social outreach club lead by teacher, Mrs. Edith

Throughout the school year they work on projects to raise funds and provide support to less fortunate populations Habitat For Humanity is a nonprofit ministry that helps people in need of housing and housing renovations.
