The Gift of Time By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Time. It’s the one thing we never seem to have quite enough of. There is always a deadline, a constant reminder of what we have yet to accomplish within a given period. From the moment we are born, there is a schedule to follow, a time frame to adhere to, expectations to be met – rarely a moment of peace. From classroom bell schedules and term paper due dates to newspaper and magazine press schedules, my life has pretty much been one giant revolving deadline from kindergarten on

up. And, while generally on time for such things, my reluctance to be a “morning person,” coupled with a (slightly) over-the-top sense of perfectionism, occasionally creates obstacles, self-imposed as they may be. Sometimes, you just need to take a collective deep breath and let things go. Choose your battles wisely; smile and accept the rest. It’s not giving up. It’s not even giving in. It’s simply making a conscious decision to rise above with an eye on the greater goal, whatever that may be. It’s not always easy. And

for those like me who tend to micromanage and overanalyze, it can be nearly impossible to let go and relinquish control of the day-today monotonies which, together, make up the great majority of life. But once you set the wheels in motion, it’s amazing how truly freeing it is. Simply live and let live. We can only control ourselves; not others, not our surroundings. The sooner we realize this and stop trying, the better. At the end of the day, you might even find you have more time to do the things you truly want to. Imagine that.

The Massapequa American Legion Post #1066 and the Sgt. Peter F. Colleran Post #776, in cooperation with the Village, will conducted the annual Memorial Day Parade in the Massapequas. The parade began on Front Street and traveled north on Park Boulevard, west on Clark Boulevard and ended

Midnight in Paris, Nassau County Museum of Art’s 2015 Ball, will be held on Saturday, June 13th, at 7 p.m. The 2015 Ball celebrates the museum’s 25th anniversary year, honoring the Hon. Thomas S. Gulotta and the Hon. Edward P. Mangano, Nassau County Executives at the museum’s founding and today. Through décor, French-inspired cuisine and costume, Midnight in Paris is designed to evoke the glamour and romance of the fabled city of lights. The Ball, one of the most eagerly anticipated events of the Long Island social season, is the museum’s major annual fundraiser, providing an important component of the museum’s operating budget, offering support for an ambitious schedule of exhibitions and stimulating educational programs for adults, students, families, special-

needs individuals and school groups. Midnight in Paris will be held at museum’s historic Gold Coast mansion, which along with extensive gardens and grounds constitutes the former Frick Estate. A recent survey suggests that 70 percent of Americans feel helpless to act during a cardiac emergency because they don’t know how to administer CPR or they’re afraid of hurting the victim. In honor of National CPR and AED Awareness Week, June 1st7th, the American Heart Association | American Stroke Association encourages everyone to learn Hands-Only CPR by watching a short video by visiting www.heart.org/ HandsOnlyCPR. Cardiac arrest is an electrical malfunction in the heart that causes an irregular heartbeat and disrupts the flow of blood to the brain, lungs and other organs. Each year, over 326,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur in the U.S. and only 10 percent of out-of-hospital cardiac

arrest victims survive. According to the American Heart Association | American Stroke Association, 70 percent of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests happen in homes and residential settings. Therefore, if you are called on to give CPR in a cardiac emergency, you will most likely be trying to save the life of someone you love. CPR, especially when performed immediately, can double or triple a cardiac arrest victim’s chance of survival. Hands-Only CPR has just two simple steps: If you see a teen or adult suddenly collapse, (1) Call 9-1-1; and (2) Push hard and fast in the center of the chest. During CPR, you should push on the chest at a rate of at least 100 compressions per minute. To easily keep this rate, push the chest to the beat of the disco song “Stayin’ Alive.”

The Scleroderma Foundation/Tri-State, Inc. Chapter will hold the 12th Annual Stepping Out To Cure Scleroderma Long Island Walk in Wantagh Park on Sunday, June 7th. Registration and check-in start at 9 a.m. and the walk on the one mile course begins at 10:30 a.m. Join Long Island walk leaders Barbara Geller, Melissa Coppola, Dawn Selg, along with patients, families, and friends for a lively and fun event that raises money for support services and research. The walk helps bring awareness of scleroderma, an autoimmune disease that affects the body’s connective tissue impacting an estimated 30,000 men, women, and children in the Tri-State area – for which there is no known cause and no cure. Food, raffles, and entertainment round out a great day at the park!

Participants can register to walk or sponsor a walker online at http://walks. S c l e r o d e r m a Tr i S t a t e . org before the event. The pre-walk registration fee is $20 for participants 16 years and older, $5 for children ages 5 to 15, and children under five are free. Registration forms and donations can also be mailed to the Tri-State office. Day of event registration is $25 for participants 16 years and older. All registered participants receive a T-shirt, and awards are given to the individual and team that raise the most money. The Scleroderma Foundation Tri-State Chapter works to support patients and families, and has advocated for resources to help find a cure for this disease for more than 30 years. CPR & AED Awareness Week In September of 2007, Congress designated the first week in June as National CPR & AED Awareness Week. This year, the week falls from June 1st7th. The week highlights how lives can be saved when more people know CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) and how to use an AED (Automated External Defibrillator). The American Heart Association (AHA) urges the public to be prepared for cardiac emergencies, and for good reason. Plain and simple, CPR when started immediately in an emergency situation, saves lives. Each year over 400,000 people die from Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA). Over 80 percent of these emergencies occur in the home. Unfortunately many bystanders do not

initiate CPR, possibly because they do not want to get involved, or possibly because they do not know what to do. More than 92 percent of cardiac arrest victims do not survive to be discharged. However, these scenarios could be quite different. A person’s survival rate increases by more than double when CPR is initiated immediately. In situations where CPR and defibrillation is provided within five to seven minutes, the survival rate is as high as 35-40 percent. The bystander can no longer be the bystander; he or she must become the FIRST RESPONDER! The Town of Oyster Bay will be offering the highly regarded Summer Youth Ice Hockey Program “Summer Pond Hockey” for hockey players ages 3 to 13. The Summer Youth Ice Hockey Program has five age groups, Dynamites (ages 3 to 5), Mini Mites (ages 6 to 7), Mites (ages 8 to 9), Squirts (ages 10 to 11) and Pee Wees (ages 12 to 13). All sessions will be held at the indoor Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center in Bethpage. The Summer Pond Hockey Program, which is open only to Town of Oyster Bay residents, is an outstanding recreational program. It provides youngsters ages 3 to 13 with the opportunity to learn skating and hockey skills under the guidance of Town of Oyster Bay ice hockey coaches.
