SWIMMERS RAISE THOUSANDS TO CURE HEART DISEASE - The Massapequa High School ladies swim and dive team held its annual Swim for a Cure event in April. The team chose to donate its proceeds, more than $4,400 to the American Heart Association to honor Kiani Morisi, a senior swimmer who had open heart surgery as an infant. The ladies also learned that head coach Kelly Malone’s uncle was one of the first open heart surgery patients for children, suffering from the same condition that Kiani was born with. Local Non-Profit Is In Need Of Foster Homes For Cats! Alleykattz is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that operates on volunteers alone. The organization was formed in 2016 by Sonnia Cepeda. They service all of Long Island, New York City Metro and the surrounding areas. Their mission of rescuing abandoned and homeless cats, as well as cats in danger of abuse and neglect. Alleykatz has a strict

adoption policy to ensure cats and kittens get the best homes. Adoption application and a home visit are required before placement of a cat into a home. They believe that there is a good home for every cat they rescue and even though it might take a little longer for some to find their “furever” home, it is worth the wait if they end up in a happy home that suits them. Every cat is in foster care until the

right home is found and Alleykattz is currently in need of foster homes (preferably close to Long Island). Bethel Hobbs Community Farm

Bethel Hobbs Community Farm is a nonprofit organization with a rich history. You may know and love their farm, or you may never believe there is an 11-acre farm in Centereach that has been feeding Long Islanders for decades! The James Hobbs family came to Long Island from Georgia in 1906 and grew farm produce in New Village (North Centereach) for local Long Islanders for 3 generations, first as farm workers and later purchasing the land, which became known as Hobbs Farm. James’ son, Alfred Hobbs took ownership in 1955 and farmed his own property, as well as rental farmland in the surrounding area for many years. He passed up many opportunities to sell the property, hoping that it would always remain a farm. Thankfully, it does remain a farm to this day. Hobbs Farm is the last farm in Centereach, as well as the last AfricanAmerican family farm on Long Island. When Mr. Hobbs passed away in 1996, he left the farm property to the Bethel AME Church in Setauket, where he was a member. The farm was renamed Bethel Hobbs Community Farm. However, the church struggled with local community organizations that were threatening to buyout the land for other means. In 2007, “Friends of Hobbs Farm” was formed, which led to the restoration process of the farm. Today, the church still owns the farm, a non-profit organization that is entirely operated by volunteers. The farm is 11 acres and it grows and harvests an average of over 30,000 pounds of fresh, organic produce, which then gets donated to several local food pantries and soup kitchens on the island. They also offer CSA Memberships, which allows locals to receive a weekly share of nutritionally dense produce grown on their farm right in Centereach. The produced is packed the same day as they go out for delivery, and recipiants can rest knowing exactly where they were grown. Additionally, the farm offers educational programs, community events and they have a seasonal farm stand. With a strong faith-based history and being that it is still owned by a local church, you will notice a strong Christian presence as soon as you walk onto their land. Faith based signs, a large wooden cross and a welcoming peaceful environment truly

makes this farm special. Bethel Hobbs Community Farm has 6 distinct areas: The Memorial Garden: The Memorial Garden is at the front tip of their property. It is a quiet, shaded area with flowers, beautiful greenery and a peaceful waterfall to remember people who have passed on. The Education Garden: The Education Garden area grows many heirloom varieties, has a small compost area and hosts educational events for small groups. The Greenhouse: The Greenhouse allows this farm to extend their season during the colder months. The Community Garden: The Community Garden hosts Brookhaven Community garden plots. The Garden of Ephraim: The Garden of Ephraim is a wheelchair accessible garden, which consists of a beautiful paved area with raised beds! There is also street access directly into The Garden of Ephraim. Food Pantry Donation Area: This area of the farm consists of several acres of farm land and is the main growing area. The selfless efforts of all the volunteers that work hard to keep this farm afloat is truly a blessing. They don’t get paid a dime, but they love what they do. To me, this farm shines bright as a symbol of hope and resilience. However, it needs some more help itself. Life’s WORC’s Family Center for Autism Announces Scholarship Program Life’s WORC (www. lifesworc.org), a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and autism through its residential, community and trust services, which this year is celebrating its 50th anniversary – Celebrate 50! - wants Long Island, Queens and Manhattan residents to know that its Family Center for Autism in Garden City, NY offers scholarships to help those who are financiallychallenged to gain access to its wide range of programs. In addition to its services, which include Behavioral Analysis Services, Family Support Services, and School-based Services, the LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS - Massapequa High School drama students will Center offers art camps, perform “Little Shop of Horrors,” which will be pre-recorded and broadcast on June sports and fitness, music 10 and 11. Life’s WORC Family Center for Autism’s Senior Director Nicky Faranda noted that, “Through the generosity of private donors, we are able to offer those in need scholarships ranging from $500 to $1,500 to pay for any of our program classes. To date, we have raised almost $200,000 which has enabled children through adults to participate in programs designed to build skills in specific areas, while encouraging socialization, recreation and the development of valuable life skills.” To date, the Life’s WORC Family Center for Autism has awarded over 239 scholarships valued at $245,589 for

individuals with autism. The scholarship program, which was first introduced in 2015, was created when it became clear that there were many in the community who simply did not have the additional financial resources to pay for the Center’s programs despite the fees being kept to a minimum. Today, in light of the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the increasing number of families experiencing financial hardships, the scholarship program is even more critical. Saladino Seeks Nominations to Honor Veterans at “Salute To Veterans” Event on July 13th Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced that the Town of Oyster Bay is seeking to honor veterans as part of the annual Veterans Awards Ceremony, and nominations are currently being sought. The ceremony will take place as part of the Town’s “Salute to Veterans” event featuring Lee Greenwood, which is scheduled to be held on Tuesday, July 13, 2021 at 7:30 pm at TOBAY Beach. Residents are invited to nominate extraordinary individuals who have made a difference in our veteran communities. “In these uncertain times, I wanted to make sure we found an especially meaningful way to recognize those

Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele Johnson today announced that residents who are interested in shaping up for summer can register for the Town’s new Outdoor Boot Camp course, which includes calisthenics and bodyweight exercises along with cardio and strength training. Classes are offered to individuals 18 years of age or older outside the Hicksville Athletic Center. Councilwoman Johnson stated, “This new Outdoor Boot Camp course is designed to keep your body guessing and your face smiling. We will cover everything from basic circuit training to interval training, and the format will change every

week. Modifications are always offered to suit all participants, so all levels are welcome. Join us this summer to stay in shape.” The new Outdoor Booth Camp course is 10 weeks long, meeting on Wednesdays from 9am – 10am, beginning on July 7th. Bring your own hand weights, resistance bands and exercise mat. Class enrollment will be limited to allow for proper social distancing measures. Masks must be worn as long as State mandates require such. Temperatures will be checked upon entry. The facility will be cleaned and sanitized daily, both before and after classes.
