Everyone gathers together on the carpet at the beginning of the day to go over the calendar and the weather, and for closing circle at the end. In-between students separate by their age group for lessons or crafts, or for one-on-one time with their buddies. Craft activities are based on the calendar, such as rainbow hats for St. Patrick’s Day, teapot picture frames for Mother’s Day and handprint flags for Memorial Day.

Raising the Flag the annual “flag raising” in my grandfather’s backyard. For as long as I can remember, there stood a flagpole at one end of the lush green lawn, and from that pole hung Old Glory, proudly waving in the wind, for the entire summer. My grandfather and uncle would unfurl this flag each May and, with a mix of reverence and humor as they paraded in their snug jackets and trousers, would carefully raise it – and then, salute proudly. Come September, this same succession of events would take place in reverse, and the flag would be carefully put away for another season. As a child, I can’t say I truly understood what was going on, nor did I appreciate the significance of the ordeal. Sure, there was a bit of tonguein-cheek humor to go along with the solemnity; but make no mistake; they took it all very seriously. Thankfully, there are

pictures from a few of these ceremonies… along with the memories to last a lifetime. Last summer, as my grandparents’ house stood empty for the first time in 56 years, a “For Sale” sign staked on the front lawn, the family gathered one late spring afternoon to begin the process of going through belongings. The ceremonies of days gone by a distant memory at this point, a somewhat tattered flag still hung from the pole. Inspired, the “children” decided to raise a brand new flag, one last time, in honor of my grandfather, and all the wonderful summers spent in that backyard. As for the old flag, the last one my grandfather had hung, I kept it. And each time I drive by the old house, now filled with a new couple starting their lives, I look to see if the old flagpole still stands. It does, and the flag remains.

There are many Memorial Day weekend traditions that people enjoy. Most of them tend to involve barbecues and beaches, bathing suits and sunbathing. Few take the time to truly appreciate the meaning of the holiday itself. I’ve written in the past of attending the annual service which takes place at Calverton National Cemetery, a mere two hours taken out of the weekend to pay respects to those who have come before us and sacrificed so much for this nation. This brought to mind another, perhaps less traditional, “ceremony” which my grandfather and great uncle used to enact each Memorial Day, and then again at Labor Day. Both veterans themselves, they had held on to their service uniforms and, ill-fitting as they were, would dig them out and don bits and pieces of them each year to take part in

To make the event feel like an awards ceremony, four students served as hosts. New Class Pets There were 28 days of anticipation as firstgraders waited for their ducks to hatch at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. On Mother’s Day, the ducks were born and students had new classroom pets when they

returned to school. As part of the duck embryology unit, each class received eggs from a local farm, which were kept in incubators for four weeks. Children monitored the conditions inside each incubator, which simulate the mother duck.

After they hatched, the small ducks were moved to glass or clear plastic cages to remain in the classrooms for a few weeks before returning to the farm. The children selected names for their new furry friends such as Fluffy, Sunny, Squeaky, Golden

Ninja and Banana. The project, which started several years ago by hatching chickens, taught students about the life cycle and how to care for young animals.

Library Leadership Honor Ed Kemnitzer, the executive assistant for technology integration of curriculum support and development in the Massapequa School District, has been named the Administrator of the Year by the Nassau BOCES School Library System. Mr. Kemnitzer was recognized for his leadership of the district’s library program and overseeing the transformation of those spaces to include more technology. This year, Makerspace centers were added to the six elementary school libraries with STEAM-based resources for students such as robots, circuitry kits, Legos and building blocks, 3-D printers and whiteboard tables. The district has taken a genius hour approach with 20 percent of library instruction devoted to Makerspace. The initiative is also expanding at the secondary level. Libraries, which he described as “the beating hearts of our schools,” have been redesigned with students in mind as old wooden furniture has been replaced by

tables that children can write on and lightweight, comfortable chairs that can be easily moved to foster collaboration. Literacy instruction still remains as the backbone of libraries and there is more technology to support that mission, such as Chromebooks and iPads. There are also new ways for students to make use of the facilities. With the help of the library media specialists, students are making Google Slide presentations, videos using green-screen technology and stop-motion animation movies. “The award from Nassau BOCES reflects our commitment to ensure that the library is a place where all students can innovate,” said Mr. Kemnitzer, who added that he shares the award with all of the district’s 13 library media specialists. “Massapequa’s libraries are spaces that are inviting to children and everyone has the opportunity here to find his or her own voice.” Mr. Kemnitzer has worked in the district for seven years. He was

the executive assistant to the principal at Berner Middle School for five years before moving into his current position. In addition to supervising the libraries, he is involved in the implementation of the one-to-one Chromebook initiative and supports the integration of technology into all areas of the curriculum. “Ed understands that librarians are powerful, that we support everyone, that we are adaptable, always growing and, most of all, essential,” said Evangeline King, who nominated Mr. Kemnitzer for the award along with fellow Ames Campus library media specialist Alex Norden. “Ed encourages us to grow and gives us the tools to do it, introducing us to incredible new technologies, and providing the support to learn how to use them.” The changes to the library would not be possible, Mr. Kemnitzer said, without the support of the board of education, Superintendent Lucille F. Iconis and the central administrators, and the principals and assistant principals.

NJHS Induction Character, scholarship, leadership, citizenship and service were the traits exemplified by 325 eighthgraders who were inducted into the National Junior Honor Society on May 23rd at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District. The students were selected for achieving a grade-point average of at least 90 and for their involvement in extracurricular activities and community service. Principal Jason Esposito

said they have “done all of the right things” and persevered when faced with challenges. He also spoke of the support they have received from their teachers, families and friends. Other speakers included Assistant to the Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Dr. Thomas Fasano, and advisers Danielle Kennedy and Heather Yandoli. The inductees will serve as members of

NJHS as ninth-graders at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus, where they will be expected to continue to uphold the core values of the organization. The Ames chapter participates in numerous community service activities including food, toy and coat drives, letters to troops and charitable fundraisers. Five ninth-graders — Alex DeJesus, Alexa Mangione, Kevin McLeer, Alex Rende and Marianne Voigt — returned to Berner to light candles for the five traits.

dance. Ms. Rerecich is a 2005 LIHSA Theatre alumna who recently made her assistant directorial debut on Theatre Row with the Off-Broadway production The Eternal Space by Justin Rivers. She performed “On the Steps of the Palace” from Into the Woods during the gala.

Seven St. John’s seniors presented the results of the research projects that they have been working on for the past year. They were: Maria AvilaFranklin of Nesconset with her project, An Educational Case Study: The Impact of Motivation on Latinas of Low Socioeconomic Status in the Pursuit of Higher Education, Sachin Devasahayam of Commack with his project, Affecting Behavior: The Effect of Positive Reinforcement and Punishment on Executive Function in High School Students, Nicole Messina of Selden, who studied Sleep and Cognitive Functioning: The Effect of Sleep Time on Short-Term Working

Memory, Maureen Petica of Massapequa who studied The Effect of Technology Use on Social Anxiety in High School Students, Marisa Pollock of Middle Island with her project The Effect of Teaching Style on Sport Skill Acquisition, Julial Romanelli of Smithtown with her study The Effect of Genre of Music on Speed of Cognitive Processing and Jennie Rostkowski of Oakdale with her project The Effect of Class Placement on the Big Fish-Little Pond Effect in High School Students. In addition to the seven presenters, seven juniors displayed the results of their projects and answered questions during a question and answer segment that was held during the program. The St. John the Baptist DHS GENESIS program allows students to pursue

scholarly research in one of the fields of Science. Students apply for admittance to the GENESIS program at the end of their freshman year. Selected students are enrolled in the first level of GENESIS which teaches them how to conduct scholarly research in Science. As students’ progress, they choose a topic that they are interested in researching and are given ownership of that project. Mr. Ken Bohman, a science teacher at St. John the Baptist and Director of the GENESIS program, was thrilled to see the results of this year’s hard work. He stated “I am constantly amazed at what our St. John the Baptist students can achieve when given resources and opportunity. It has been a pleasure working with such talented and motivated students.”

We Can Do Anything, But We Can’t Do Everything!

A popular toy made science fun for fifthgraders at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. Students used Hess trucks to learn about the laws of motion. The children used smaller, pullback Hess racecars to pull the trucks

down the hallway. With each floor tile conveniently measuring a foot, it was easy to keep track of how far the vehicles traveled. They also added water bottles to the back of the trucks to try the experiment at different weights. Teacher Matthew Cunha said the students were

able to study different properties of motion including speed, friction and inertia. They followed the scientific process by making hypotheses, conducting the experiment with variables, and recording and analyzing data.
