With almost a year of experience under their belts, young musicians at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District showcased their talents at the Beginner Spring Concert. Thirdand fourthgraders performed for their peers during a morning show at school followed by an evening performance for families at the high school. The concert

featured instrumental and vocal ensembles. Music teacher Tom Tucker conducted the third-grade recorder band which performed songs included the “Peanuts” theme and “Rockin’ Robin,” as well as the fourth-grade chorus which sang a folk song from the Torres Strait Islands, “Sesere Eeye,” and “Fifty Nifty United States” which required the young vocalists to memorize the

Alyssa Mener of the Massapequa UFSD, who is studying vocal music at Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA), recently won the Town of Oyster Bay Arts Council Talent Competition. The teen vocalist wowed judges with her rendition of Mozart’s classical aria, “Voi Che Sapete.” Ms. Mener was honored

for her achievement at the council’s Scholarship Winners Awards Presentation last month, where she was presented with the Platinum Award and a $1,000 scholarship. Before the awards ceremony, she mesmerized the audience with a performance of the winning aria, as well as the jazz standard, “The Nearness of You.”

Sharing is Caring I recently listened in on a rather interesting Press Club of Long Island panel discussion, highlighting the process which went into investigating a cold case that had gone unsolved for over 50 years on the east end of Long Island. The teamwork between reporters and the police department eventually resulted in the case being “cracked,” so to speak, and the unsolved murder put to rest. I bring this up not because of my fascination with true crime stories; but rather, it brought to light the importance of a component often missing in many lines of work, in life as a whole … that of collaboration. Often, the focus is on independence, on doing things one’s own way, with little room for input from others. Cooperation is key – this a concept taught to us from the first day of kindergarten on up, earlier even, as we begin to learn the process of sharing our resources (even if those happen to be building blocks or Barbie dolls). I don’t often have the

opportunity to cover events; but recently, I was privileged to take my journalistic tools into the field and exercise some of those reporting and photography skills honed in the lecture halls of college, even as far back as the grade school classroom. As I stood on the tarmac at Republic Airport last week, borrowed camera in hand, anxiously awaiting the arrival of the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, I scanned the crowd assembled. Veteran reporters mixed with fresh-faced interns, all waiting for a glimpse of the majestic planes. Some carried smart phones; others set up elaborate tripods and fiddled with expensive lenses, all determined to capture that “perfect” shot upon landing. Suddenly, there was a roar overhead. All attention was instantly focused on the sky, as cameras zoomed, record buttons were pushed and people jostled for a better angle. And then, just like that, they were gone, gliding to a landing on a distant runway before slowly taxiing toward us, where they would

eventually park for follow-up pilot interviews. All around, you heard the murmurings of Did you get the shot? and I thought they would be approaching from the other way… Can we get a do-over? And in that mix of elation and disappointment as many realized they had not, in fact, captured much of anything in their respective frames, there emerged that collaboration I speak of – that natural instinct to cooperate for a common goal. Phone numbers were exchanged, business cards swapped and contacts were instantly made, with promises to share footage and photos. After all, we were here for the same reason. No benefit to withholding information that, ultimately, we all desired to share with the masses. We may not have cracked a case that morning, but we demonstrated on a much smaller scale the beauty of cooperation, of teamwork. The stunning fighter jets aside, that may have been the most beautiful sight of all.

Lisa Gatti is the CEO & Founder of PalO-Mine Equestrian, Inc., a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa opened Pal-O-Mine in 1995 as a 501(C)(3) non-profit. Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today! Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy, Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Genetic Disorders and Emotional Disturbances. Every day, they have a different school drop off children at their location to benefit from their organization; they also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program

“Peep peep peep” has been the background noise in first-grade classrooms at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District as students have been raising baby chicks. Several weeks ago, each class received an incubator with eggs. The children checked on the eggs every

day and made sure each incubator’s temperature was about 100 degrees. After three weeks, students watched the baby chicks start pecking, and shortly after they had new friends in the classrooms. Each class had between three and nine baby chicks, which were moved into brooders. The students

made sure the young animals had proper food and water. Teachers showed the children how to carefully hold the chicks. The activity helped the first-graders learn about animal life cycles. Students recorded their daily observations in journals, and some classes even named their baby chicks.

Hoops Lover Massapequa High School student Jo Jo Gonzalez loves basketball and on May 21st, he got a surprise visit from the Harlem Wizards. Jo Jo’s family was selected to appear on an NBC production of “George to the Rescue,” in which George Oliphant and his

team of contractors and designers renovate a home or yard. At Jo Jo’s house, they will redo his backyard and build a basketball court. As a kickoff event, Massapequa High School hosted an assembly with the Harlem Wizards

basketball team, who displayed their trick shots. Students and staff filled the bleachers and cheered on Jo Jo and the Wizards, who played a team featuring Oliphant and several of Jo Jo’s teachers. BABY SHOWER SUCCESS - President Joanne Brennan and Catholic Chairperson

Pools to Open facilities.” The Town of Oyster Bay operates five pool facilities, including Bethpage Community Park, Marjorie Post Community Park, Plainview-Old Bethpage Community Park, SyossetWoodbury Community Park, and a saltwater pool at Tappen Beach in Glenwood Landing. Beginning on May 26th, pre-registration will take place daily and will be held from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, weekends and holidays at the community park pools and from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Tappen Pool. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, pre-registration will take place from 12 p.m. to

7 p.m. at all facilities. Registration will take place during regular hours of operation once pools open daily. “In addition to the great new amenities, the Town is offering swimming lessons at local pools to members age five and older,” Councilman Hand said. “Our more competitive swimmers can join a swim team, which is available to pool members ages 6-16. Swim Team members have the opportunity to compete against other Nassau County Municipal Swim Conference teams.” Residents interested in pre-registering must bring a copy of their general tax bill with section, block

and lot number required. Additionally, birth certificates are required for children 16 years

of age and under. Town pools will be open daily from June 23rd through Labor Day Monday,
