Bianca Saraniero, of Massapequa Park, has been named Valedictorian of Hofstra University Class of 2019. She is the highestranking individual in a graduating class of 1,288 students. Bianca achieved a perfect 4.0 cumulative grade point average in undergraduate studies as a biology major in the bachelor of science program and earned the Outstanding Senior Scholar award. She graduated Summa Cum

Laude with high honors in Biology and was a Provost Scholar every semester. She is a member of the Phi Beta Kappa National Honor Society, the nation’s oldest and most prestigious honor society, and received the Phi Beta Kappa Book Award. She is also a member of the TriBeta National Biological Honor Society and Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society. In addition, Bianca conducted Biology Education research on Student Engagement Levels in relation to Instructional Methods of STEM Higher Education Classrooms with Dr. Jessica Santangelo of the Biology Department at Hofstra University. Bianca worked as a camp counselor to students in grades 6-12 enrolled in

Marine Biology, Criminal Justice, and Video Production programs at Hofstra Summer Camps. She also raised a Canine Companions for Independence service dog who currently works in a rehabilitation center in Virginia. Bianca has always been an extraordinary student as she was awarded a K-12 Perfect Attendance Award from the Massapequa School District in 2015. Bianca is pursuing her Master of Science (M.S. Ed.) in Biology Education at Hofstra University with plans to become a New York State Secondary Education Biology and Chemistry teacher. She aims to inspire her future students in the same way her educators have inspired her.

Making A Statement Ninth grade artists put a new twist on a common practice by using technology to create their artist statements, which analyze their successes and struggles this year. In preparation for the annual art show at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus, students in Tildy Becker-DeLuca’s studio in art class recorded their statements, which will be accessible to anyone with a smartphone. Each student will have about a half-dozen pieces displayed at the art show on June 5. Typically, they would post their artist

statement with their work, but this year there will be a QR code instead. Guests can scan the code with their cell phone cameras and hear each student artist recite his or her statement. The students worked with technology learning coach Jarrett Fifield to record their statements. On their Chromebooks they used Vocaroo, an online voice recorder. Students could record as many times as they wanted until they were satisfied. Each artist received a unique QR code which linked to the recording,

and could also download it onto their computers. “This is a good tool for a project like this because it’s simple,” Mr. Fifield said. “Their need is pretty direct in providing a way for viewers of their art to hear their artist statements.” Ms. Becker-DeLuca said that as students prepared their artist statements, they were asked to consider several factors including their favorite and least favorite projects of the year, how they have grown as artists and their overall experiences in the class.

Longevity in marriage is something to be celebrated. Couples who reach fiftieth and sixtieth wedding anniversaries often commemorate those anniversaries with big parties. But there are some around the world who would consider golden anniversary celebrants to still be newlyweds. In December 2015, Karam Chand, 110, and his wife, Kartari Chand, 103, from Bradford, West Yorkshire (originally from India), celebrated their 90th wedding anniversary, becoming the world’s longest-betrothed couple. In America, John and Ann Betar, ages 104 and 100, respectively, have been married 83 years as of 2016. The couple eloped in 1932. They have been named one of America’s longest-married couples by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter.

Massapequa, NY – Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Steve Labriola today announced that the Town, in partnership with local boy scout Troops 601 (Massapequa) and 261(Farmingdale), recently planted 60 trees at Anchor Park in Massapequa to help support wildlife and improve water quality for residents. The Saladino administration was awarded these trees through a grant from the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation. Supervisor Saladino stated, “These new trees will help stop pollutantcarrying storm water runoff from going directly into the Seaford Creek during severe storms. I thank the Boy Scouts and volunteers who joined us

in planting these new trees in Anchor Park.” Anchor Park is located adjacent to Seaford Creek, which is susceptible to storm water runoff during significant weather events. The new trees will help reduce the effects of potential ﬂooding and serve as buffers against pollutants and sediments. Other benefits of the tree planting include providing a habitat of food and protection for birds and other animals, as well as providing shade, comfort, and improved aesthetics for park visitors. No existing trees will be damaged or removed as part of the new tree planting initiative. “We are committed to enhancing the quality of life in our communities and that includes environmental initiatives such as this.

Bikers Against Child Abuse, Inc. (B.A.C.A.) is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization that exists to provide aid, comfort, safety and support for children that have been sexually, physically and emotionally abused. They are dedicated to the principle that ‘one of the basic rights of childhood is to be safe and protected’. When a child’s family or environment has failed them, B.A.C.A. stands ready to help.

One of the greatest and most unique assets of B.A.C.A. for children is their “biker family attitude”. Bikers are a tightly knit group. The brotherhood and family values are not just a way to live, but a way of life. One for all and all for one is not just a quote but it is their reality. After children have been introduced into the B.A.C.A. family they are not helpless or powerless anymore. The Long Island B.A.C.A. Chapter had their 100 Mile Ride Event on Saturday, May 18, 2019. Thousands of B.A.C.A. members from around the world participated in this event in various countries and states on the same day! They raised awareness of child abuse and of the services they provide for abused children all over the world.

several class periods, Mr. Viola explained. Instead, the videos were created during one period, which he can watch outside of class and then provide feedback. He explained that students need to be proficient in throwing and catching for units in the physical education curriculum in seventh grade and beyond.

Some requirements are that you have a desire to help abused children, you have regular access to a motorcycle, you are 18 years or older, you can pass an NCIC fingerprint check and you can attend monthly meetings and Chapter events (their meetings are held the second Sunday of every month at the American Legion Hall in Bohemia at 9:00AM unless it’s a holiday). Empty soda bottles provided the perfect tool for students to explore aerodynamics at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus. Science Club members took to the back field in their safety goggles for the annual soda bottle rocket launch afterschool on May 8, the second of three launch dates.

The ninth graders spent weeks perfecting their devices under the direction of advisers Maureen Burke and Nicholas Donohue. Not only did they have to construct rockets that could ﬂy high, but they had to create devices that could protect an egg when falling to the ground. Mr. Donohue said that students, who worked

either individually or in small groups, were judged on both ﬂight time and whether or not their eggs cracked. Students applied several scientific principles such as air pressure, engineering and thrust to weight ratio, in addition to building their critical thinking, problem-solving and teamwork skills.

Consistently one of the top fundraisers on Long Island, Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District recently raised $36,400 for the American Heart Association. Students in kindergarten through fifth grade participated in the Kids Heart Challenge

on April 17, in which they danced along to music and did different exercises with jump ropes. Led by physical education teachers Michael Dellicurti and Melissa Osborne, children did physical activities that promote cardiovascular health. Pledges were tallied in the weeks that
