Sharpening Math Skills

ast Lake Elementary School students took part in the yearly tradition of sharpening their Math skills while raising money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. They participated in the St. Jude Math-A-Thon® program and raised $8,237.70 for kids battling cancer and other deadly diseases. Students asked for pledges from family members and friends, either in an amount-perproblem or a one-time donation.

Physical Education teacher Michael Dellicurti says he “really loves his job.” And, it shows. Dellicurti, a resident of Massapequa, was chosen as the recipient of the 2014 Elementary Physical Education Teacher of the Year Award from the Nassau Zone of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (NYSAHPERD). The award recognizes his “extraordinary contributions to his students, school district and community.” Dellicurti will accept the award on June 16th at the 2014 Professional Recognition Awards Ceremony at Adelphi University’s Alumni House, 154 Cambridge Avenue, Garden City. A physical education teacher for 12 years, Dellicurti

was hired by the Massapequa School District in 2002 and has worked in the district’s Unqua Elementary School for the past eight years. During his time in the district, he said he is most proud of the steps taken to “make the physical education department one of the best around by being ahead of the curve in every aspect of the field.” “Each and every day when I come to work I am a happy person,” he said. “I love motivating the students and encouraging each and every one of them to learn how to be a better person while teaching them to live a healthy lifestyle. We focus on nutrition, fitness, being well-rounded individuals and always being kind to others no matter what.” In addition to these lessons, Dellicurti stresses to his students the importance of giving back to others. Unqua’s “Jump Rope for Heart” fundraising campaign for the American Heart Association, led by Dellicurti and his physical education colleagues, has ranked among the highest in the nation, raising about $34,000 this year. “The way we have these students and their families

for most people, all that matters is that it qualifies as a paid day off. And there we are, off and running, blissfully unaware and increasingly unpatriotic as a result. When did this sense of apathy set it? Is it just a manifestation of the more recent generations, or is it representative of our country as a whole? Now, I’m certain there are many to whom this sentiment does not apply. Any veterans, or the family and friends of those who have served, are generally quite appreciative of such a day’s significance. I, for one, admit that I had never attended any kind of Memorial Day commemoration prior to this year when my family

With the recent passing of Memorial Day, I thought it appropriate to resurrect an old column from 2006, as the sentiment remains the same no matter the year… I am willing to bet that there are many children who were probably raised to think the sole purpose of Memorial Day is strictly to roll out the barbecues, open the pool for the season, head to the beach for the first time and check out all those great sales. Pretty sad, when you think about it. Such a holiday is surely not a “happy” occasion in the traditional sense; although,

This summer, Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA), Long Island’s top-ranked arts school invites students to learn from the masters in a variety of disciplines. The LIHSA Summer Arts Academy offers young artists (entering grades 6-12 in the fall) a hands-on learning experience with professional artists who will help them to develop their skills. Beginnerthrough advanced-level classes and workshops are conducted in a custom-designed, airconditioned arts complex that boasts professional dance studios, state-ofthe-art digital media and music/audio production labs, art studios, practice rooms and a fully-equipped professional theatre. Daily courses are available in drama, musical theatre, creative writing, dance, music and visual arts. Students can also choose from master classes in clowning and stage combat. Attendees work with ensembles, enjoy performances from guest artists and take cultural field trips to museums and Broadway shows. The academy concludes with performances by all students in each arts discipline. This four-week academy runs June 30th-July 25th at the Long Island High School for the Arts in Syosset. Enrollment into the academy requires an individual school district recommendation. Accepted students are placed in classes based on age and level of achievement. Owner Dana Zdanko was formerly an employee of Jacto Dance for eight years before purchasing the studio from Miss Corrine and opening it under her own name. Legacy Dance offers dance instruction for students from ages two through adult in a wide array of genres including: Hip Hop, Jazz, Ballet, Tap, Acro, Mommy & Me, Irish Step, Pom/Kickline and Musical Theatre. Private lessons are also available as well. The studio features an award-winning competition team, which is growing each and every year. Dance Camps will be offered for those devoted students who can’t get enough dance for three weeks during the summer as well! The students wanted to know how people survive horrific life events but still maintain dignity, integrity and compassion; and the artistic task for the students was to find the proper medium and method to best respond to this question. They also wanted their artwork to pay tribute to two women who, in the face of extraordinary abominations, managed not only to salvage their existence but to subsequently live full and productive lives in New York. The result is a large lucite “box” of approximately six feet in length, painted on both sides by students who have depicted scenes that bring the sisters’ story to life. Each spring, the Holocaust Memorial and

Tolerance Center offers competitions for students centered on a theme of social justice, tolerance, and respect for diversity. The competitions offer students the opportunity to showcase their creative talents. Winning entries are exhibited at the Center and photographed for inclusion in its Competition Journal. The mission of the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County is to teach the history of the Holocaust and its lessons, through education and community outreach. These include the dangers of antisemitism, racism, bullying and all other manifestations of intolerance, promoting resistance to prejudice and advocating respect for every human being. Math-A-Thon Fundraiser East Lake Elementary School students took part in the yearly tradition of sharpening their math skills while raising money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. They participated in the St. Jude Math-A-Thon® program and raised $8,237.70 for kids battling cancer and other deadly diseases. Students asked for pledges from family

members and friends, either in an amount-perproblem or a one-time donation. Using the MathA-Thon workbook or interactive CD, students honed their math skills by adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing, while helping to fight childhood cancer in the process. “Thank you to all of the hard-working students

Rallying Together Unqua Elementary School fifth and sixth graders waved posters and cheered as former Northport teacher Chris Pendergast led other ALS patients and supporters in the “Montauk Tso Manhattan” Ride for Life down Unqua Road, making their last stop for the day at Unqua Elementary School. ALS or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease

that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Ride for Life is an annual event that takes place during ALS Awareness Month in which ALS patients ride their power wheelchairs along with supporters through communities to raise funds for a cure and create awareness for the disease. Unqua Elementary School students presented Pendergast with a check for $442 for the cause. He, in turn, spoke to the crowd

and thanked them for their support. “Every year, Unqua Elementary School is honored to be part of the fundraising efforts to help combat this horrible disease,” said Unqua Elementary School Principal Deanna Catapano. “It’s always heartwarming to see our Unqua family unite together to heighten awareness for this important cause.”
