Substance misuse is not on PAUSE in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic! Your help is needed now more than ever to coordinate prevention efforts to find the best ways to keep youth safe and healthy. The YES Community Counseling Center’s PACT Project (Partnering in Action and Change for Tomorrow) collaborates with the Massapequa Takes Action Coalition (MTAC), the Farmingdale ADAPT (Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Team) and the Levittown Community Action Coalition (LCAC) to prevent underage drinking and substance misuse in our communities. Working together, we seek to understand patterns of substance misuse to better address this challenge through targeted prevention, education and outreach.

YOUR OPINION MATTERS YES Community Counseling’s Pact Project
Guardians of Rescue is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Their mission is to facilitate and foster programs and activities that further the unique benefits of interaction between people and animals. We are all aware of the toll that this pandemic is having on people, yet the impacts are being felt beyond humans. Animals are also being impacted in numerous ways by this situation. Guardians of Rescue has been dealing with the Covid Crisis in many different ways, such as helping people feed their pets and taking on the responsibility to care for homeless animals. They have even stepped out of their realm of helping animals to assist seniors during these trying times. They are overwhelmed by the amount of assistance needed and their phones are ringing non-stop. So many people have had their employment impacted by the virus, therefore donations have been down. This makes it difficult for them to continue feeding the animals, building doghouses, taking in new rescues and trying to cover all their expenses. “The pandemic has created a host of problem for the animals,” says Robert Misseri, President of this organization. “I hope that we can make it through this difficult time, so that we can continue to help the animals in need.” Robert is also the President of Paws of War, another non-profit right here on Long Island. This organization trains and places shelter dogs to serve and provide independence to our U.S. military veterans that suffer from the emotional effects of war. In turn, each veteran can experience the therapeutic and unconditional love only a companion animal can bring. Throughout this pandemic, they have been tending to the most at risk veterans. They find that their older senior veterans typically are very prideful and refuse to ask for any handouts. Many live alone and will still go out and put themselves at risk
to get food for their pets. However, Paws of War will at times arrive at their homes with no warning, knock on their door and tell them that they have some items to drop off for them. “You always see that tear in their eye” says Robert. “That someone actually cares enough to come to their home and bring them something is very special.” A lot of these veterans suffered for many years, all of which now have lifelong disabilities due to their service to our country. Paws of War feels that at the very least they can bring them pet food to give them a helping hand during these tough times. Additionally, Paws of War has partnered with Cambridge Catering, who is providing hot cooked meals free of charge to our veterans. Hank, a Smithtown resident and veteran, was someone that Paws of War helped. When they arrived at his home, they noticed a his two very proud flags were destroyed. They handed off the pet food and trays of hot food that Cambridge Catering has provided, but they didn’t stop there. They then went to the hardware store and purchased everything to fix and replace his flags. Guardians of Rescue and Paws of War can both use your support so they can continue to help others. Home Garden DIY Projects That Can Conserve Energy Around The House Home renovation projects can pay numerous dividends. Renovations can have a positive effect on resale value, make homes more livable for residents and, in some ways, make homes more affordable. Renovation projects that aim to conserve energy can save homeowners substantial amounts of money. Such projects don’t often require considerable effort or even sizable financial investments, which can make homeowners skeptical as to just how much they can save after completing the project. The scale of a project may have little to do with how much homeowners will save. For example, the U.S. Department of Energy notes that a relatively effortless task like turning back a thermostat between 7° and 10° F for eight hours per day can save homeowners as much as $83 per year. A more labor-intensive task like planting shade trees saves homeowners an average of between $35 and $119 per year. When looking for ways to conserve energy around the house and save money, homeowners need not necessarily commit to expensive projects. The DOE notes that the following are some energy-saving projects and details what homeowners can expect to save after completing them. While each individual project may not result in jaw-dropping savings, homeowners who follow many of these recommendations may end up saving more than $1,000 per year. Project: Install Exterior Low-E Storm Windows. What is it? Low-e windows reflect infrared heat back into a home. Such windows are coated
with an ultra-thin layer of metal that improves the window’s insulation ability. How much can I save? Homeowners who install low-e windows can save between 12 and 33 percent on their annual heating and cooling costs.
Massapequa Pharmacies Help Prevent Rx Misuse
Distribute MTAC’s FREE Home Rx Disposal Kits Local Massapequa pharmacies, Arlo Drug Store and Stuart’s Drugs, have partnered with Massapequa Takes Action Coalition to distribute FREE home prescription drug disposal kits to further prevent substance misuse across the Massapequas. Quite frequently our youth and young adults can merely open the medicine cabinet and there before them is a variety of drugs available for the taking: pain pills for postsurgery, sleeping pills from an overseas airplane trip, or cough medicine from last season’s flu. While Massapequa Takes Action Coalition’s Partnership for Success Grant has contributed to fewer young adults misusing prescription drugs and decreases in home access to prescription drugs, 51% of Massapequa youth (grades 7-12) who reported misusing prescription pain relievers, found them at home (2018 PFS Student Survey). To prevent prescription drug misuse, residents should always SECURE all medicines that have to remain at home; MONITOR quantities and control access; and

MTAC notes that during the NYS Pause Directive, the Nassau County Police Department IS NOT accepting any prescription drugs at its precincts. FASNY Offers Lifesaving BBQ And Grilling Tips During Lockdown As New Yorkers are beginning to emerge from “New York on Pause,” and looking towards nicer weather, many will be dusting off and firing up their grills for the first time in months. The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York urges all New Yorkers to follow some basic rules and tips to avoid accidents and injuries, and to remember not to hesitate to call for help needed. “The warmer weather will certainly encourage New Yorkers to break out their BBQ’s for some outdoor cooking,” said FASNY President Steven Klein. “We want all residents to stay safe as we emerge from quarantine and heed some basic safety tips. We also remind everyone to continue to follow social distancing rules to keep their families and other families safe for the coming months.”
According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), from 2014-2018, an average of 19,700 patients per year went to emergency rooms because of injuries involving grills and gas grills were involved in an average of 8,900 home fires per year, including 3,900 structure fires and 4,900 outdoor fires annually. Over the past few weeks, PSEG Long Island has been helping to energize our healthcare heroes by providing catered meals, snacks and sports drinks to local hospitals, nursing homes and healthcare facilities on the front lines of the coronavirus pandemic, including to the ER staff at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip. During National Nurses Week (May 6-12) and throughout the month of April, dinners, lunches and breakfasts, along with uplifting thank you notes from PSEG Long Island employees, have been sent to daytime and overnight staff caring for COVID-19 patients across Long Island. To date, more than 300 meals have been provided at a dozen facilities from the Hamptons to the Queens County line. The healthcare workers are most appreciative and send their return thanks with photos of them with the meals. The initiative will provide several hundred meals at more than 30 health facilities across Long Island and the Rockaways to bring cheer and sustenance to

People are unable to grieve the loss of loved ones in ways they are used to. No wakes for Christians. No shivas for Jews. No threeday mourning periods for Muslims. That’s why Long Island’s two leading, county-based mental health organizations have begun offering online bereavement support groups designed to provide comfort, support, and “grief tools” to those who have lost loved ones to the COVID-19 virus. In the absence of the intimate contact typically associated with the mourning process, these remote, weekly bereavement sessions aim to mollify the pain of individuals whose family members or close friends have succumbed to COVID-19.
