Based in Patchogue, EOC of Suffolk is dedicated to promoting selfsufficiency among low-income families and individuals. Its programming largely centers on revitalizing communities, broadening the minds of children and assisting families in need.

One of this non-profit’s programs that serves people in Suffolk County and Nassau County is called Chronic Health Care Coordination. Managed by program director Delmarie Gotti, Chronic Health Care Coordination supports individuals with such chronic illness as HIV/AIDS, mental health-related conditions, heart disease, diabetes, asthma and hepatitis C. It also serves populations with obesity, substance abuse problems, sickle cell disease and other long-term conditions.

Because of their circumstances, and because of the day-to-day life challenges many participants face, it’s often difficult for them to maintain a proper focus on the management of their chronic health needs. Many are jobless and many lack an adequate supply of food. Some are homeless or have lacked proper housing for years.
participants are receiving the necessary care to stay healthy and to stay out of emergency rooms and hospitals. EOC of Suffolk team members help their clients “navigate the system.” They can assist with the filing of applications for various forms of public assistance. They may help connect participants with food pantries and help arrange assistance through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly known as food stamps. Additionally, a support team from EOC of Suffolk can help clients find housing and even help arrange for the services of a moving company. If clients are grappling with behavioral or mental health issues, EOC staffers can help them get proper professional assistance. They’ll help participants get past possible stigmas often associated with mental illness. The EOC of Suffolk team can assist by lining up such support as therapeutic assistance, group therapy and medications. While individual care plans vary from client to client, the most common, long-term goal of the Chronic Health Care Coordination program is to help participants manage their personal health care needs, stabilize their lives, become independent and find work. Clients who achieve these goals “graduate” from the program, ready to move on with their lives on a firm foundation. Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Vicki Walsh today announced the launch of a new poster contest open to 5th grade students in the Town of Oyster Bay. The theme of the poster contest is bike safety. “Many residents have shared their concerns about bike safety here in the Town of Oyster Bay with us, as drivers and youngsters alike are often unsure of safe biking practices,” Supervisor Saladino said. “We launched this poster contest to begin increasing awareness of bike safety guidelines in our community, especially as we celebrate National Bike Month this May and spend more time in the outdoors as summer approaches.” To enter the contest,
students must digitally design or draw a picture that illustrates safe bike riding. The poster must also include simple language about New York State Guidelines for bike safety, which are available online at https://tinyurl. com/bikesafeny. The top three winning posters will be unveiled to the public during an official meeting of the Oyster Bay Town Board, showcased in winners’ hometowns, and featured in a town-wide newsletter. All entries will be displayed in a “Digital Art Exhibit” on the Town of Oyster Bay’s website. “I encourage all 5th Graders in the Town to participate in this program, as it offers an opportunity to not only become more educated on the serious issue of bike safety, but to also learn more about town government and

To assist property owners who missed the May 10th deadline for paying their 2021-2022 school taxes, Oyster Bay Town Receiver of Taxes Jeffrey Pravato reminds residents they can still pay the bill by June 1st with a State-mandated 2% late payment penalty while avoiding additional interest and fees from accruing on their property. Late payers should immediately contact the Tax Receiver Pravato’s office at (516) 624-6400 if they did not
receive a second notification with a delinquent tax bill. Payments postmarked after May 31st cannot be accepted since the collection warrant will have expired. Those payments must be sent to the Nassau County Treasurer at 1 West Street, Mineola, New York 11501. In September, the Nassau County Treasurer will be mailing notices to all property owners with taxes in arrears. Receiver Pravato advises homeowners who fall under those circumstances

Student Leaders Are Mental Health Mentors Student council leaders at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District take on many tasks, from spearheading activities to promoting school spirit, but they also serve as social and emotional role models. Four years ago, the district launched a partnership with the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence, implementing the RULER philosophy. The social and emotional learning initiative launched at Berner, and has now become part of the school’s culture. Students learn to recognize, understand, label, express and regulate their emotions. Principal Jason Esposito said that the purpose of RULER is to show students that their feelings, positive or negative, matter and are valid. The goal is to help them to better understand their emotions and express themselves in a productive way. Student council members model strategies for their peers on how to be in control of their emotions. “They embody the traits of people who are emotionally intelligent,” Mr. Esposito said. “They listen to others and they’re aware of each other’s
feelings.” Students noted the impact that they can have on those around them. If someone is having a bad day, that negative energy can spread. Conversely, a positive attitude can go a long way in cheering up others. Eighth grader Tatum Brennan said with emotional intelligence comes the tools to help out a friend who is having a tough time. “You can just make someone’s day by smiling,” added sixth grader Ty Miranda. Kiera Conaghan and Vivienne West noted how their feelings can impact how they do in school or when playing a sport. They said that it is important to have strategies to manage their emotions so they are in a position to succeed. Sixth grade Gabby Anselmo added that it is important to start every morning on a good note because that sets the tone for the day. “We take what we learned and apply it to realworld situations,” Kiera said, of how students use these skills and strategies in their lives. Students have learned several techniques to help regulate their emotions, explained sixth grader Frank Sulawa. They can take deep breaths, count
backwards or have a metamoment, which is a time to pause and reflect before acting. Seventh grader Riley Donohue said that all students face some degrees of stress and nerves, and the RULER philosophy tools help them manage. The mood meter, a colorcoded chart that represents different emotions based on levels of pleasantness and energy, is a particularly valuable resource. In one of the conference rooms, Berner has a large mood table, a social and emotional learning version of the periodic table of elements. The student council leaders say they are grateful that their school puts such a strong emphasis on social and emotional learning, and it makes them feel cared for. Seventh grader Kevin Kern likes the focus on self-care and feels it benefits his emotional well-being. “The school really does a good job with that, to show us how we’re feeling and helping us to feel better,” seventh grade Alex Fischetti said, who noted that the motivational signs and quotes around the school are part of the “little things” that make a big difference.

Massapequa High School Students Get A Taste Of Teaching
Massapequa High School students became the teachers, visiting all six elementary schools in the district in March and April for the High School Heroes program. They met with second graders for lessons on careers, community, government and finance. The program, sponsored by Junior Achievement, includes several real-world simulations led by the high school students. Second graders are assigned different jobs and learn how every one of those roles is vital to a community’s success. They also study production methods by pretending to open up a donut shop, and using stickers representing different ingredients to make their product. For a
lesson on voting, students choose a desired community service project. More than 70 high school students participated in the program this year, which is overseen by School-toCareer Coordinator Denise DeLury. High School Heroes has been a staple in Massapequa for more than 15 years, although this was the first time it was held in-person since 2019. Ms. DeLury noted that the high school “teachers” once participated in the program themselves as second graders. “I thought it would be nice to teach other kids,” said junior Estefani SalasReyes, who got to work with her brother’s class at Unqua Elementary School.
Sophomore Bridget Rail aspires to be a therapist and signed up for the High School Heroes program to gain some experience working directly with children. She found value in the interaction with her younger peers. Each session was almost a full day and every class had three or four students from the high school serving as teachers. Before they stepped into the elementary classrooms, they attended training sessions with Junior Achievement to understand the lessons and explore the resources they would be using to teach. Each second grade student was provided with a workbook and received a competition certificate at the end.

Music Program Earns Repeat Recognition
(167 Broadway, Hicksville) on June 6, June 7, and June 8 between the hours of 5:30 PM - 9:30 PM. Badminton will feature two sessions for registrants to choose from. The first session consists of Tuesdays from 8:45 PM to 10:05 PM, Fridays from 8:45 PM to 10:05 PM, and Sundays from 6:10 PM to 8:10 PM. Session 2 consists of Tuesdays from 10:15 PM to 11:35 PM, Fridays from 10:15 PM to 11:35 PM, and Sundays from 8:30 PM to 10:30 PM. The Badminton program is 10-weeks long and costs $75 for residents and $100 for nonresidents, with the program scheduled to begin on July 10. Registration is at the Hicksville Athletic (167 Broadway, Hicksville) on June 6 from 5:30 PM 7:30 PM and on June 7 & June 8 between the hours of 5:30 PM - 9:30 PM. Tau Herculid Meteor Shower Viewing At State Parks The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is pleased to announce that several Long Island State Parks will remain open during the nighttime hours for viewing of the Tau Herculid Meteor Shower on the evening of Monday, May 30 into predawn hours of Tuesday, May 31, 2022.
