Bus Service Begins NICE Bus begins its Jones Beach State Park service, the n88 out of the Freeport LIRR station, starting Saturday, May 28th. Non-stop service from Freeport will run 8:30 a.m. through 9:00 p.m. Saturday, Sunday and Monday on Memorial Day weekend and the Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach. Beach service will operate on weekends through June 25th when daily service begins and continues through Labor Day. The bus runs every 30 minutes and stops at the beach’s two bathhouses and the Central Mall. The one way fare is $2.75. NICE accepts its GoMobile payment app, MTA MetroCard and coins (no dollar bills) for payment. Jones Beach features a host of family attractions including two swimming pools, a miniature golf

coarse, and expansive beaches with a two-mile boardwalk. The park features 6.5 miles of ocean beaches for surf bathing, and a half-mile bay beach for still water bathing. Jones Beach is also home to the Theodore Roosevelt Nature Center, which offers educational tours and programs for all ages. Great Expectations By: Jamie Lynn Ryan “Spring is the time of year when it is summer in the sun and winter in the shade.” ~ Charles Dickens, Great Expectations While the calendar may technically still say spring for almost another month, the approach of Memorial Day weekend signals summer on the horizon. As thousands of Long Islanders head to the beach to enjoy the sun, surf and sand, we reflect on the first five months of the year… how has your 2016 been so far? Is it headed in the right direction? Are there still goals left to attain? What

does the remainder of the year hold in store? Of course, we can only predict so much, direct our fate to a degree; but, with that, our actions – or inaction, as the case may be – are what set the precedence for how our days will unfold. A little positive momentum goes a long way in determining the course of weeks, months, even entire years. One small step in the right direction is all it takes to turn things around. And with that, spring is the perfect time to look forward, that season of rebirth and growth, of blossoming flowers and greening grass, of eggs hatching and bunnies

frolicking, of pools opening and bathing suits and flip flops seeing the light of day. Speaking of, those late afternoons and early evenings of golden sunlight do wonders for the psyche – how nice to leave work and still have that sunset glow to drive home by. And so we turn the page on May, look ahead to June and all that summer beckons. We dust off the remnants of the past, and gaze forward into the great unknown, full of anticipation and promise and excitement in the hope that tomorrow will be a better day. Here’s to 2016 and molding it into something memorable!

The Girl Scouts of Nassau County (GSNC) recently hosted their 7th annual Girls Go the Distance Walkathon and Activity Fair at Old Bethpage Village Restoration. Over 800 girls, family members, friends and Long Islanders attended the event and enjoyed a fun-filled day outdoors, while participating in health-themed games and program activities. “This annual event brings our entire Council together and helps us promote healthy living to encourage our girls to live a socially and emotionally healthy lifestyle,” stated Donna Ceravolo, Executive Director of the Girl Scouts of Nassau County. “We are so thankful to everyone who participated in this wonderful event, along with all of our sponsors, volunteers and donors who made the day possible.”

This year, a scavenger hunt was added to the twomile walk, incorporating existing historic landmarks from Old Bethpage Village Restoration to serve as clues. Daisy-to-Ambassador Girl Scouts enjoyed healthy snacks, traditional Indian dancing, decorating T-shirts, and dabbling in GSNC Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) projects during the day’s action-packed activity fair. Celebrating 30 Years ACLD’s Children’s Services moved into the Kramer Learning Center in Bay Shore in 1990; today, the Alan and Ellen Spiegel Children’s Center in Bay Shore – which was added to the program’s offerings in 2014 – is the home of ACLD’s learning and recreation programs for children with autism, learning disabilities and other developmental disabilities. Offerings at the Center include a full-day and halfday preschool classes which serve 65 children with developmental disabilities, a Head Start program which serves ten children, and an afterschool program for 37 school-aged children. The Center is also home to a summer camp by the Great South Bay YMCA. ACLD enrolls children in the camp with the support of a grant from the New York State Office of People With Developmental

Disabilities (OPWDD). In addition, the Kramer Learning Center continues to operate, providing comprehensive diagnostic, educational and therapeutic services to 160 children with developmental disabilities, along with a Head Start program which serves 20 children. Alex Konstantyn, a 78 year-old Holocaust survivor, shared his emotional testimony and personal perspective of survival with 8th and 9th grade students at Nassau BOCES Willet Avenue Middle School. When Mr. Konstantyn was just four years old he thought he was going on a picnic with his family. Instead they were fleeing the bombs from Germany and Russia as they spent the next year wandering the countryside of Poland. Students, teachers and administrators sat in silence as Mr. Konstantyn recounted his journey and

hardships over the next four years. He and his mother survived ordeals at police prisons, two years in an underground bunker, being masqueraded as a girl in a dress and brutal winters. Through it all his mother kept them alive until they were liberated by the Russians. In 1950 they immigrated to Israel. “As long as I can, I will keep sharing my story so that it can be kept alive and stop it from happening again,” said Mr. Konstantyn. In his introduction, Willet Avenue Middle School Principal Robert Lombardi said it is “how

we treat one another that determines the kind of school we have and ultimately what kind of community we have. We study history in school, but today is an opportunity to hear about history firsthand.” Konstantyn was presented with an Honorary Golden Eagle Award and pin. The award, usually reserved for students of high caliber, was given to Konstantyn for overcoming adversity and to thank him for his presentation. He is the first visitor to receive an Honorary Golden Eagle Award.

Headquarters Relocated The Girl Scouts of Nassau County (GSNC) will be moving into a temporary headquarters in Hicksville, while their longtime facility located at 110 Ring Road, Garden City, undergoes extensive renovations. The move, scheduled for early July 2016, will provide the GSNC corporate offices, Cookie Cupboard and Girl Scout Shop with a short-term home while the regional Girl Scouts council headquarters undergoes a complete overhaul. “We are very grateful to everyone who is part of the Girl Scouts of Nassau County for being understanding and supportive as we transition to our new temporary office in Hicksville,”

stated Donna Ceravolo, Executive Director, Girl Scouts of Nassau County. “After more than 50 years, our building is in need of several updates, which will help us better serve the 23,000 Girl Scouts members.” The planned renovations will be executed by design firm Danita Otruba Architect of Westbury, and are anticipated to be completed summer 2017. The headquarters will receive much-needed structural updates including a new roof, windows and insulation which will provide overall cost savings on utilities, security and technology system renovations. Additionally, the interior will undergo several cosmetic changes,

including updates to the kitchen area, a redesign of the existing Girl Scout Shop, a new Volunteer Resource Center and a showcase for the council’s “Living History” collection of Girl Scout uniforms and treasures from several decades. The changes to the first floor will also add much needed space for meetings and programs. To prepare for the move, the Girl Scout Shop will be offering 15 percent off all in stock apparel (excluding uniforms and camp items) in store only, while supplies last at the Garden City location. Troop leaders, Girl Scouts, parents and volunteers can visit the leased property at 325 Duffy Avenue, Hicksville, beginning mid-July 2016.

(ACLD), a leading Long Island based not-for-profit agency devoted to supporting the pursuit of an enviable life for children and adults with autism, learning and other developmental disabilities, is proud to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the launch of its Children’s Services Program. “We’ve come a long way from the days of supporting 15 infants at their homes and 42 preschool children at the Bay Shore Children’s Center,” said Noreen Clemens, Director of ACLD’s Children’s Services and an original member of the Children’s Services team. “But we know now as we knew then that it’s critically important to make sure children with developmental disabilities get off to a good start in their educational lives.”

Tee-Off for Teens The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) hosted its 5th Annual Tee-Off for Our Teens tournament on Tuesday, May 17th. This year, the agency was hosted at the Sebonack Golf Club in Southampton to raise more than $100,000 for LICADD’s teen substance abuse and addiction programs. Participants were treated to a fast speed-of-play tournament under sunny skies, before returning to the Club for a delicious dinner overlooking Peconic Bay. At a time when so many families know firsthand the pain of having a child struggling with addiction, this event was established to respond to the escalating needs of the community. LICADD’s programs are needed more than ever, and the tournament’s proceeds are specifically earmarked in support of the agency’s evidencebased programs for teens. In addition to providing teen-focused interventions, treatment and recovery programs, LICADD’s services aim at preventing Long Island’s youth from becoming addicted in the first place. Our program Too Good for Drugs seeks to bolster children and young adults’ selfesteem, confidence

and communication with peers and parents, before they are presented with the choice to use alcohol and drugs. Under the Student Assistance Program (SAP), these resources are available in schools throughout Long Island and continue to expand into new school districts each month. For young people displaying signs of alcohol and drug abuse, Teen Intervene offers a month-long combination of individual and parent-present counseling sessions focused on charting a different direction that includes abstinence and healthier coping strategies. These services are only a brief snapshot of the wide range of resources that LICADD provides: the agency conducts screenings, brief interventions, referrals to treatment and relapse prevention services to individuals and families impacted by substance abuse. LICADD also offers evidencebased prevention programs, community outreach initiatives, a mentoring program for children of incarcerated parents, and advocates for comprehensive and responsible public policy related to addiction. “Our clients are getting younger and younger as the number of teens affected by prescription

drug, heroin and alcohol abuse continues to rise each day,” said LICADD Executive Director Steve Chassman, LCSW, CASAC. “The expanding need for services is staggering, and we are grateful that many community members came out today in support of Tee-Off for Our Teens.” The tournament was made possible by LICADD’s generous Sponsors, Castagna Realty, Inc., Michael Brennan, John Doolan, Freedom Mortgage, The Rabinowitz Charitable Foundation and the Peters Family. topic of “NYS Comptroller Audits.” Hosted by Albertson Water District Commissioners Howard Abbondondelo, Richard Ockovic and Kenneth Vey, the session’s focus was on the constitutional and statutory objectives of auditing. “The difference between independent audits and comptroller audits includes scope and materiality,” stated Mr. Ferreira. “Being thoroughly prepared
