The Family and Consumer Sciences Department runs the preschool every spring through its Child Study course. High school students interested in careers working with children, such as teaching, psychology or pediatrics, are able to get a hands-on experience in a program that follows all state childcare regulations. The school runs Tuesday through Friday from March through early June. The weeks are split into two sessions, so each preschool student comes twice a week. They are partnered with high school buddies, who play with them, teach them their letters, numbers, shapes and colors, and provide snacks and safe supervision. He said he likes the liveliness of the preschool program and how there’s “always a new moment.” Junior Ashley Smith wants to work in childcare, possibly at nursery school, and learned that patience and a positive attitude is required to be successful in the field. Ms. Fierro-Gregg said that the class not only helps the students decide if certain careers might be right for them, but it gives them experience they can use now in searching for jobs as preschool helpers or summer camp counselors.

The Summer Swing Memorial Day weekend is upon us and, just like that, the unofficial start to summer beckons. Swimsuits will be unearthed from the back of closets, beach passes affixed to car windows, and bags packed with sunscreen and towels as the great majority of Long Islanders head to one of our local beaches to celebrate the season. For the last seven or so years, I have been attending the Jones Beach Air Show, taking in the breathtaking aerodynamics of the U.S. Navy Blue Angels and the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds on alternate years. It doesn’t matter how many shows – and pre-show arrivals – I have witnessed; it just never gets old. There is something incredible about witnessing these planes in flight, soaring against the sky in perfect formation.
Of course, Memorial Day weekend is only the beginning, and the hope is that there will be plenty more beautiful beach weekends to enjoy throughout the next several months, although, doesn’t it seem as though the nicest days are reserved for those spent inside the office staring at a computer screen? There is just no predicting Mother Nature, so best to take advantage of whatever rays of sunshine you can as soon as they begin to peek through. Speaking of unpredictable weather, I currently have tickets to about seven or eight concerts at the Jones Beach Theatre this year; fingers crossed that at least a few will be enjoyed under a clear summer sky, sans torrential downpour, lightning storm or any other inclement conditions. While none of my shows have ever been cancelled, there have

been several that pushed the boundaries. Just last summer, in fact, I found myself pondering just how “waterproof,” in fact, my phone was, and whether it was advisable to continue videoing the performance in front of me as sheets of rain streamed down around me. {The answers, in case you were wondering, were: A) not quite as waterproof as expected, and B) not so advisable.} So, enjoy your weekend, whatever it is you choose to do to usher in the summer season. Although the calendar indicates there’s still one month to go, the collective mindset seems to say there’s no need to wait. So slather on that sunscreen, grab your beach bag and dig your toes into the sand as the ocean caresses your feet. Just keep an eye on the sky for any storm clouds approaching.

The King of Chess “It’s fun and there’s really no luck involved. It’s all skill,” said Noah, who began playing the game for only a few years after he joined the Chess Club at Ames as a ninth-grader. Since then, he has played in numerous tournaments and achieved the title of candidate master. Every year, the high school hosts a chess demonstration in which someone comes in and plays multiple games at once. In the past, it was always an outside chess master, but because of Noah’s skill level, this was the first time a Massapequa student performed the task that requires great concentration
and memory. “You have to be able to recognize each game and recognize the weaknesses and strengths of each opponent,” said chess club adviser Christopher Weaver. “You don’t have to do that for just one person, but for many people at the same time.” The Chess Club meets twice a week. Students play for up to three hours in which they analyze their games and discuss strategies. They also play against other schools and this year’s team, led by Noah, made the playoffs and finished fifth in the county.

Imbroto, Town Clerk James Altadonna, Jr. and Nassau County Legislator James Kennedy recently joined with the Young People’s Cultural Arts Workshop of Massapequa’s staff to celebrate the organizations 50th Anniversary and present them with a citation for their commitment to help better the community. Founded in 1966, the organization provides children with opportunities to discover and enjoy various arts, music and sciences through participation and self-expression.

Massapequa High School senior Noah Flaum knows chess like few others. The nationally ranked player and member of the Chess Club put on a display when he played a dozen games at once in the cafeteria after school on May 15th. In the open competition, Noah played against teachers and students, including Chess Club members from the high school and the Ames Campus. He went from board to board, making his moves in just a few seconds, and winning his first game in less than five minutes and ultimately claiming victory against all his opponents.
HIGHEST HONOR - An Eagle Scout Court of Honor Ceremony was recently held for Nicholas Von Rosk of Troop 590 in Massapequa. Eagle Scout is the highest honor a Boy Scout can achieve after completing hours of community service and attaining numerous merit badges. Supervisor Joseph Saladino proudly joined with Nicholas and his parents, Paul and Susan, to congratulate him on this achievement.

Growing Ideas Studio in Art students at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus recently found out what it would be like to work as architects. The ninth-graders let their imaginations run wild as they designed and built treehouses. Each student in Beth Adler’s class began by selecting a geometric shape
for their design, creating a floor plan and completing an elevation drawing in pencil, which showed what the structure would look like on the outside. They built models from materials found at home and were encouraged to use natural products. For finishing touches, they added items like seashells,
beads, leaves, flowers and miniature umbrellas. “The students are so creative and inventive,” said Ms. Adler, noting the fun features they included like balconies and spiral staircases. “Their use of found objects is amazing and the attention to detail is very present.”
CONCERT FOR CANCER - Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph S. Saladino, along with Nassau County Legislator James Kennedy, joined Massapequa High School students and staff, at their inspirational event: “5 Alive” Pop-Rock Benefit Concert, which took place in Massapequa. Proceeds from the event benefit children fighting cancer at Winthrop hospital and Supervisor Saladino was proudly supporting making a difference in the lives of kids with cancer.

Eight students from the Massapequa School District had their artwork on display at the twentyseventh annual Legislative Student Exhibit hosted by the New York State Art Teachers Association. Their work was featured at Legislative Office Building in Albany as part of the association’s Youth Art Month celebration. From Massapequa High School’s main campus, junior Christian Weissenberg, and sophomore Katlyn Lizzio had their work displayed. Christian’s piece, “Fashion Design,”
was made using markers and Katlyn created an American flag with acrylic paint. Their art teacher, Julie Thornton, said their works were selected for the show because of their outstanding use of technique. Ninth-graders at the Ames Campus selected for the show were Konstantina Giannaris, for her colored pencil drawing of the steering wheel of a BMW, and Ellie Egher, for her colored pencil seascape. Their work was completed under the direction of art teacher Beth Adler. At East Lake Elementary
School, fifth-grader Shae Brennan and sixth-grader Alex Santiago were both recognized for their drawings of tigers made with oil pastels. Their art teacher is Patti Krakoff. McKenna Elementary School art teacher Ellen Cervone submitted the work of fifth-grader Antonia Buscemi and sixthgrader Sarah Spinelli. Antonia created a mixed media collage, “Musical Cubism,” and Sarah used Sharpie markers and watercolor paints to create an anime self-portrait.

Fundraiser for St. Jude By knowing their numbers, students at East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District were able to create a big number to donate to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The school raised $6,857.50 to help children who are battling cancer and other deadly diseases. Many of the patients at the hospital are being treated
for the most aggressive childhood cancers. To show their support, East Lake students participated in the St. Jude Math-A-Thon. Students had sponsors make pledges as they completed books filled with gradeappropriate math questions. The top two earners in the school were a pair of kindergartners: Isabella Guzzo who raised
$605, and Ryanne Hilt whose donations totaled $495. “We thank all of the students who participated in the Math-A-Thon and all of the families and community members who donated so generously to this wonderful event,” said math teacher Jean Scavella, who coordinated the event at the school.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph S. Saladino recently spoke to over 100 students in the 6th grade class at Birch Lane Elementary School in Massapequa Park who attended a Live Webinar presented by the National Hurricane Center, for
Hurricane Preparedness Week 2017. Supervisor Saladino expressed how important preparedness is and that the Town of Oyster Bay’s Public Safety outreach programs promote education on this matter. As a former student of

The Massapequa School District’s popular elementary Makerspace program continues to grow, as instruction has been added for students in the early grades. Makerspace debuted at the beginning of the school year for fourththrough sixth-graders as an enhancement to library instruction and to support the STEAM initiative for science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics. Following its overwhelming success, students as young as first and second grade are now
getting to experience the hands-on activities that foster innovation, creativity and collaboration. “It’s really cool that you get to make things and try out new ideas,” said Unqua Elementary School thirdgrader Jack Birney after visiting Makerspace with his class for the second time in early May. One popular tool is Contraptions, a set of wooden blocks that are used to build ramps, tunnels and bridges to roll a ball through, allowing students to experience engineering. With Ozobots, children
use different colored markers to draw lines, which give commands to the small robots to follow giving them a basic introduction to computer programming. “The students love it and they look forward to Makerspace,” said Unqua third-grade teacher Suzanne Scanio, who noted that students can work independently or cooperatively. “It helps them use their imaginations and it’s learning through play.”

Bringing Legends to Life It’s not often you will find Michael Jordan, Lady Gaga or Amelia Earhart in an elementary school classroom, but they were among the many famous individuals who could be found at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District on May 16th. The second grade
wrapped up its biography study, part of the nonfiction unit, by hosting a Living Wax Museum. Students read books about historical figures and living celebrities and each picked one to further research. They selected athletes, musicians, authors, artists and those who were pioneers in their respective
fields. Family members were invited to the secondgrade classrooms and meet these famous individuals, portrayed by the students. The children wrote speeches that included biographical information and interesting facts.

Fairytale Mock Trials Fairy tales typically have happy endings, but the conflicts that make those stories interesting were the basis of a series of mock trials at East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. Sixth-graders in the magnet program designed four fictional trials based on popular fairy tales. They wrote scripts, created evidence, made costumes and played the parts of the judge, defendant, prosecuting and defense
attorneys, and witnesses. There were the cases of Cinderella and the golden slipper, Minion malpractice, the Three Bears vs. Goldilocks and Humpty Dumpty: was it really an accident? Parents who came served as the jury and turned out guilty verdicts in three of the cases. Led by teacher Lisa Gennardo, the students studied law and the judicial process for several weeks. To prepare for their cases, they practiced persuasive
writing. “Mock trials help them understand the law, practice critical thinking and gain greater confidence with public speaking by assuming various roles in a fictional criminal or civil trial,” Ms. Gennardo said. “Students get to experience firsthand the difficulties that judges, lawyers and juries face in determining which facts are relevant and what legal PRESIDENT HONORED - Nassau County Legislator James D.
