What Would You Do... By: Jamie Lynn Ryan What would you do if you won a million dollars? Well, in this day and age, the question is more, what would you do if you won many tens of millions of dollars, hundreds of millions even? After taxes, of course. And the answer? Well, it varies by person. Some people, when presented with such a seemingly farfetched concept, spout off a list of equally unrealistic purchases that they would immediately make – you know, the private island, jumbo jet, yacht… the whole deal. But then there are others who, should they ever have the good fortune to come into that kind of money, want only to “be comfortable” – to pay off remaining

mortgages and car loans, to make necessary repairs and renovations around the home, maybe buy a new car – nothing too outlandish really. Because really, once you take into account the taxes, plus your average life expectancy, a few million dollars can be blown through fairly quickly. It sounds like a lot, but is it really? Depends upon how you budget it. Plan a couple of family vacations, put some away for your children’s college funds, maybe some in the retirement fund… Which brings to light that other question – would you continue to work if you won such a jackpot? For some, the answer would be an easy and unequivocal “no.” And, if your only purpose of having a job is to make ends meet, that makes perfect sense.

But if you are fortunate enough to have an actual career, one that you have nurtured throughout high school, college and young adulthood, then why should money lessen that passion? If anything, it should allow you the freedom to explore other, perhaps less lucrative, options within that chosen field. Think of it as a new lease on life. Money can’t buy happiness, we know this much is true. But it sure can eliminate many of the daily stresses which cause unnecessary aggravation in our lives… which, in turn, would most likely result in increased happiness, no? Of course, the odds of anyone being forced to wrestle with these questions are fairly slim to none. But hey, you just never know.

daily and will be held from noon until 6 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, weekends and holidays at the community park pools and from noon until 5 p.m. at Tappen Pool. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, registration will take place from noon until 7 p.m. at all facilities. Beginning on June 28th at Tappen Pool and July 2nd at the Community Park Pools, registration will be held during hours of operation. Town residents interested in registering must bring a copy of their general tax bill with section, block and lot number required. Additionally, birth certificates are required for children 16 years of age and under. Town pools will be open daily from June 22nd through Labor Day, Monday, September 2nd. Residents who wish to learn the hours of operation should visit the Town

of Oyster Bay website, www.oysterbaytown.com. Swimming lessons will be available at the community park pools, at an additional cost, for members ages five and older, registration for which is done by mail. Each community park pool also has a swim team that is available to pool members. Park teams from Marjorie Post, SyossetWoodbury and Bethpage Community Parks compete in the Nassau County Municipal Swim Conference. Councilman Coschignano advises that those with further questions regarding Town pools should call the Parks Department at 516.797.4129. “I hope that our residents take advantage of early registration so they are ready to begin a funfilled summer at one of the Town’s pools,” added Councilman Coschignano.

From June 7th to July 25th The Jimmy Fund/Variety Children’s Charities Theatre Collections is looking for movie lovers with big hearts and a few spare hours to help benefit cancer care and research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. Volunteers are needed to pass the canisters after the Jimmy Fund trailer runs during movie previews on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at participating National Amusements and other independent movie theaters in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, and Vermont. Volunteers receive T-shirts and possible other gifts like movie tickets, upcycled bags, or Red Sox tickets, depending on the time they commit to the program. Three-Time Finalists For the third consecutive year, Massapequa High School’s Mock Trial Juniors Team was a finalist in the Plainview-Old Bethpage Nassau County Local Tournament. The team members had to argue six cases in a row, which were presented to them at the competition, according to Mock Trial Team Advisor Daniel Bachman. They are given 10 minutes to prep their opening statements,

direct examination, cross examination and closing arguments. They then argue their cases, get constructive criticism and move onto the next round until a winner is crowned. “The students in our Mock Trial program continue each year to set a higher standard of oral argument, trial preparation and academic achievement,” Bachman said. “Speaking for myself and their other law

teachers, we couldn’t be more proud of them.” The team’s lawyers were Jenna Petrungaro and Rebecca Giradin who will be volunteering at the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office this summer. The team’s witnesses were Christie Flanders and Jenny Raffaele, and the legal researcher was Cameron Wunderlin.

On a rainy, soggy, Saturday afternoon, May 11th, the Den 2 Bear Scouts from Massapequa’s Pack 696, planted 6 new spruce trees on the grounds of Grace Episcopal Church & Day School, Massapequa. The Church and the grounds had suffered the loss of several trees following Superstorm Sandy, but the biggest loss, was a 50 ft. evergreen

on the grass near Merrick Road. The boys wanted to give back to the church for the use of their gym to hold scout meetings and the Pinewood Derby. In gratitude, Harry Cole, Johnny Dibbins, Christopher Fitzpatrick, Angelo Foto and Jack Heckman planted the six seedlings. Perseverance, determination, loyalty and hard-work described

the scouts’ actions that day. Not many would have come in the pouring rain to perform an elective “good deed.” At the first sound of thunder, the pack followed scouts rule: “Be lightening Wise! If you hear thunder, you are close enough to a storm to be struck by lightening. Take shelter immediately!”
