Recreation Registration Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Rebecca M. Alesia announced that registration for the Town of Oyster Bay’s 2014 Summer Recreation Program is now underway. “Entering its 49th year, the Town of Oyster Bay Summer Recreation Program offers an exciting and affordable summer option for parents,” Councilwoman Alesia stated. “Children between the ages of four and 12 are eligible to join this agegrouped program, which provides a safe, clean and stimulating atmosphere where they can enjoy themselves. Children are grouped into Early Childhood (4-6); Juniors (7-8); and Intermediates (9-10) and Seniors (1112). Depending upon the children’s ages, the program offers trips, tournaments, shows and athletic events, including the 36th Annual Tobay Games.” “Families with children who participated in last year’s Summer Recreation Program will

automatically receive a registration packet for this year’s program,” Councilwoman Alesia continued. “All others may call the Recreation Division of the Town’s Department of Parks at 516.797.4125, and a registration packet will be sent to you that you can fill out and mail in.” It is important to note that registration is by mail only as walk-ins will not be accepted. Councilwoman Alesia noted that the fee for the Summer Recreation Program is $275 for one child, and $100 for each additional child within a family of more than two. The registration deadline is June 20th, 2014. The Summer Recreation Program will be held at Marjorie R. Post (Massapequa), PlainviewOld Bethpage and SyossetWoodbury Community Parks, Ellsworth W. Allen Town Park in Farmingdale, Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park and Beach in Oyster Bay, and Tappen Beach in Glenwood Landing. The

program begins Monday, July 7th, and runs through Friday, August 15th. There are both morning and afternoon sessions each day and children may attend both. However, no supervision is provided between 11:45 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. Parents must make arrangements for their children during this time. “The Town’s Summer Recreation Program is an excellent opportunity for children to participate in wholesome activities right in their own communities,” Councilwoman Alesia commented. “Both parents and kids love the program. We’ve watched many kids begin as participants in Summer Recreation and return later to spend summers working as counselors in the same program.” For more information about the Town of Oyster Bay Summer Recreation Program, contact the Town Parks Department Recreation Office at 516.797.4125.

Marking The Milestones By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I’m not sure when it first occurred to me, but at some point over the course of the last few weeks, I came to the somewhat startling realization that it has been 10 full years since I graduated from college. A whole decade. Wow. I’m not sure why this came as such a shock. After all, the math clearly adds up. And I did attend my high school’s 10-year reunion a full 4 years ago. But still, it seemed that there would be a bit more of a cushion until the next milestone. I suppose time flies while you’re busy

working to make ends meet and your life is not dictated by a bell schedule. Although, come to think of it, there were no bells to signal the beginning or ending of class in college, which was nice in its own way. It was that subtle transition from the structure of high school to the faux freedom of “the real world,” where you were able to choose a path well suited to your future pursuits and, well, pursue it. And now here we are, 10 years later. Bells have been replaced by alarm clocks and deadlines and bills and all those fun adult

responsibilities. To think we once thought finals and term papers were the ultimate source of stress, right? It almost makes school seem appealing once again. Almost. To all those graduating from college this Spring, congratulations. May you find something worth pursuing that brings you a great deal of happiness and fulfillment; ideally, something which pays the bills, of course. And may you savor these next years most of all as, before you know it, you will be receiving invitations to your own 10 year college reunion.

In recognition of Autism Awareness Month, McKenna and Birch Lane elementary schools raised nearly $1,200, or $553 and $591 respectively, for Autism Speaks, an organization dedicated to researching the causes, treatments and eventual cure for autism. Both schools raised funds by participating in the organization’s “Puzzle Piece Campaign.” Those who donated to the cause received a paper puzzle piece that was pinned to bulletin boards in the hallways of the schools. Both schools also joined the International movement to “Light It Up Blue” in celebration of World Autism Awareness Day and Autism Awareness Month by designating a day where students wore blue to school to promote autism awareness.

How do things work? That was the question on the minds of inquisitive second graders from East Lake Elementary School who visited the Long Island Children’s Museum’s hands-on learning exhibit titled, How Things Work. The program featured six simple machines and explained how they

complete tasks through fun, interactive ways such as a game show format. A favorite activity for the children was playing on Climb It, a two-story apparatus featuring slides, mazes and ramps. The children also explored the museum’s bubble room, music room and television station.

Greek Festival Ancient Greece came to life at Raymond J. Lockhart Elementary School as sixth graders, dressed as ancient Grecians, immersed themselves in a host activities to reinforce what they learned about ancient civilizations. Guest Readers Reading books to youngsters was a golden opportunity to sharpen communication skills for Massapequa High School students in Valerie Domenech’s and Julie Moran’s English classes. Students recently read and discussed perennial favorites such as The Hungry, Hungry Caterpillar, Drat That Fat Cat and Julius The Baby Of The World, with secondand third-grade students at Unqua Elementary School. “This is a great experience for students to take on leadership roles,” Domenech said.

“The high school students were taught how to best inflect their voices when reading to children and prepared a synopsis of the books they read to use for discussions.” The elementary students had a bevy of questions for their guest readers and were very curious about what the high school was like. With wide-eyed fascination, they asked if they thought the high school was a lot of work, if they went on field trips and what they ate for lunch. The answers delighted the young students who were happy to learn more

about what they had to look forward to at the high school. “The children laughed a lot and really responded well to us,” said tenthgrader Victoria Graci. “They were so cute and sweet,” added Cat Hoolahan, a classmate. “It was a rewarding experience.” Moran then asked the young students what they thought she should give her students as a grade for reading to them. The response was a resounding, “A plus, plus.”
