Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk www.eoc-suffolk.com The primary mission of the Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk (EOC of Suffolk), is to promote selfsufficiency among low-income families and individuals. Most of their programming is devoted to revitalizing communities, broadening the minds of children and assisting families in need. Despite the word Suffolk in its name, the agency operates a number of programs in both Nassau and Suffolk counties. One such initiative is its Services for People with Developmental Disabilities program.
EOC of Suffolk offers a comprehensive array of services for people with developmental disabilities aimed at enhancing their quality of life. Its specially trained staff will customize a program to help maximize each person’s ability to live with independence and self-sufficiency. In addition, personalized case management helps to ensure that individuals receive the government benefits to which they are eligible. The overall offering has six components: Community Habilitation Services: Under this program, EOC of Suffolk provides individuals with support and services that focus on developing life skills and community integration.
Respite Services: EOC of Suffolk provides temporary relief from the demands of caregiving, helping to reduce overall family stress. The program helps families provide uninterrupted care for their loved one with a developmental disability. Respite/Recreation: This service component provides educational, occupational and recreational activities, as well as opportunities to increase socialization skills. Services take place on-site as well as on field trips to help enrich the learning process. Self-Directed and Fiscal Intermediary Services: This program empowers individuals to exercise the maximum amount of control over the types of support and services they wish to receive. They also have a voice in the selection of providers and in how services are provided. Working with employers and funding agencies, people with developmental disabilities can engage as full citizens in communities of their choosing. EOC of Suffolk can also arrange for the services of a Fiscal Intermediary for individuals who have chosen self-direction – supplemented by administrative and billing support. There was some sad news in the community with some of our members recently as Councilman Thomas Hand lost his Mother Carolyn and Tobay Receiver of Taxes Jeffrey Pravato and his wife Jennifer lost Jen’s Mother Esther and Amy Recco of Friends for Life lost her Mom Sharon as well. This all happened within days of each other and I ask all to keep the people mentioned and their families in their prayers. We all know how it feels to lose someone close and we ask all to pray for their strength at this time. Finally, do not forget to go to Field of Dreams and look at the new Chamber welcoming sign at the corner of County Line and Merrick Road. It looks great and our thanks to Past President Patty Orzano and the Town Supervisor Joe Saladino for getting this done.

Town To Upgrade Field Of Dreams In Massapequa With New Synthetic Turf Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced that the Town will upgrade two athletic fields at Field of Dreams in Massapequa. As part of these upgrades, the Town will replace two synthetic turf fields, including the east soccer/lacrosse/football field and the practice field. These replacements will not only improve the playing surfaces for young athletes, but also the overall safety for players. “These safety upgrades
will help protect local athletes and children who use these fields, as the existing synthetic fields have become worn out over time,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Synthetic fields improve the look of our community, help alleviate the high costs associated with maintaining grass fields, and increase play time for athletes as weather has limited impact on the fields.” Synthetic turf fields have an approximate useful life of 8-10 years, depending on
use, and are less expensive than the long-term cost of maintaining natural grass and a dirt surface. Synthetic fields also provide the potential for fewer cancellations of games due to inclement weather, as the field is able to absorb rain storms in a manner that is not possible on a dirt infield. Massapequa Takes Action Coalition (MTAC) recently acknowledged Community Action for Social Justice (CASJ) for its work in the Massapequas’ to prevent substance use. CASJ is a not-for-profit organization that fosters improved health and quality-of-life for Long Islanders impacted by drug use, incarceration, homelessness, and chronic disease through participant-centered services and policy advocacy to reduce broader social and structural barriers.
Working together, MTAC and CASJ have collected hundreds of pounds of unwanted medications and needles/syringes at Massapequas’ biannual drug take back events. In addition, a vital part of CASJ’s work is their Opioid Overdose Prevention Program which provides free training and naloxone kits, not only at community events, but with individuals and families in the comfort and privacy of their own homes. Since 1997, MTAC works with many local, state
and national partners to prevent youth substance use and promote a healthy Massapequa. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, Town Clerk Richard LaMarca and Receiver of Taxes Jeffrey Pravato joined with Biltmore Shores Civic Association in celebrating the grand opening of Alhambra Park in Massapequa. Alhambra Park had previously been a scenic waterfront location enjoyed by local residents that was devastated by Superstorm Sandy in 2012. Through the Governor’s Office of Storm Recovery (GOSR), the Town secured more than $4 million in State funds to restore and improve the
facility, including measures to mitigate flooding, create better recreational access and provide overall beautification. “Alhambra Park has long been a favorite destination for residents of our south shore and the overall experience will now be better than before,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Through federal funding, we were able to mitigate flooding and provide for water quality improvements while bringing a facelift to the park and improving its overall appeal. Whether you enjoy a picnic, kayaking or
walking on the boardwalk, Alhambra Park will be a favorite destination for this neighborhood.” Executive Director of the Governor’s Office of Storm Recovery Katie Brennan said, “Alhambra Park is one of Oyster Bay’s most valuable community assets as it provides both opportunities for recreation and helps mitigate flooding.” Improvements to Alhambra Park included installation of new bulkhead, drainage improvements and installation of green infrastructure to reduce
flooding. The design of the facility uses bio-retention areas to naturally treat and filter stormwater runoff, thereby removing pollutants from the water prior to its return to our aquifers. The park also features access to the South Shore Blueway Trail with a kayak and canoe launching area. To further enhance safety and security, security cameras will be placed on site and a timber floating dock is being installed for use by the Town’s Bay Constables and the Nassau County Police Department Marine Bureau.
Summer Swim Lessons Registration Available Online this Month Oyster Bay Town Councilman Tom Hand recently announced that registration for the Town’s summer swim lessons will take place online beginning Tuesday, May 31st at 9:00 am on the Town’s website at www. oysterbaytown.com/parks. Swim lessons are available at all Town pools (SyossetWoodbury Park, PlainviewOld Bethpage Park, Bethpage Community Park
and Marjorie Post Park) for children ages 5 and older. “Because we live in a Town sandwiched between the Long Island Sound and the Atlantic Ocean, it is extremely important that children in the Town of Oyster Bay learn how to swim,” said Councilman Hand. “Our swim lessons have been a hugely popular program for many years as children learn how to safely enjoy fun in the
pool under the guidance of our American Red Cross certified lifeguards.” There are four twoweek sessions throughout the summer. Classes are run on weekdays at 11:15 am and 12:15 pm for 45 minutes each. The registration fee is $55 per child for the first two-week session with a season pass. If the same child signs up for additional two-week sessions, the fee will be
$30 per subsequent twoweek session. For those without a season pass the registration fee is $75 per child for the first twoweek session and $50 per subsequent two-week session.
