Three-dimensional printing, once considered the future of technology, is very much the present in the Massapequa School District. At Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus, enrollment continues to grow in the Design and Draw for Production Class which focuses on the expanding technology. Teacher Matt Burke said the class began more than a decade ago as a handdrafting and mechanical

Last year’s big project was a 3-D version of the Ames floor plan, and this year students are making their own fidget spinners. At the end of the yearlong course, students choose their own project and ninth-grader Jack Chillemi is designing a charging dock for his phone. “I like that I have freedom to create what I want,” said Jack, who aspires to be an engineer. “It’s cool that ideas go from my imagination to then seeing them in real life.” He added that he likes learning the terminology used by the professionals. Mr. Burke said he expects
that 3-D printers will eventually become what the microwave was 30 years ago — a novelty item that turned into a household necessity. With six classes of Design and Draw for Production offered at Ames this year, he said students are realizing the value in a course that prepares them for jobs in growing industries. “This is a great fundamental course and this technology is going to become even more popular,” he said. “Being able to design something and being able to 3-D print it is awesome.”

Beginning that day, Town residents may choose to get their beach stickers at certain locations ahead of time to avoid the rush during the Memorial Day weekend when some Town of Oyster Bay beaches will open for weekends only. “Many of us eagerly look forward to Memorial Day weekend for the first opportunity to enjoy a fun day at the beach,” Councilwoman Johnson said. “By purchasing a Town beach sticker in advance of the beaches opening, you can avoid hitting long lines at the start of the beach season and be able to spend more time in the sand.” The Councilwoman noted that beach stickers will be on sale daily, beginning on May 13th, at Tobay Beach, John J. Staying Power obstacles have only helped those truly reputable media outlets to gain a stronger foothold. Too much of anything is a bad thing; this is a commonly held opinion. is reliable. Not to throw the phrase back in my day around too lightly but… back when I was in college, media was pretty much defined as print or broadcast; newspapers, magazines, television, radio. Social media was only just beginning to take off, and its potential as a legitimate source of news – breaking or otherwise – was as yet unanticipated. Fast forward to the present day, when your average elementary school student is “plugged in” to his/her own cell phone throughout the day. My, how times have changed. Regardless of whether we support this development, the fact is - it’s happening. Best to jump on board and learn to harness the power of the media. It’s here to stay.

Students enrolled in high school German programs across the country were recently recognized for the language skills by the American Association of Teachers of German including one from the Massapequa School District. Evan Warns, a sophomore at Massapequa High School, was chosen by the Long Island chapter of AATG to represent both counties in the final round of the nationwide competition this year. Evan’s outstanding achievement on the AATG’s examination earned him this honor. German is one of six
languages offered in the district. Students in German programs not only learn language skills, but also gain cultural knowledge. Hoops Contest Massapequa High School hosted its Hoops for Hope fundraiser on May 5th, raising approximately $2,900 in memory of a former Massapequa student. The money will go toward the Jacob Brice Memorial Scholarship fund, which presents financial awards to graduating seniors each year. The three-on-three basketball tournament was held in honor of the young man who died in 2013, before his senior year, from complications
from a heart condition and brain cancer. The event, open to students and staff, was organized by Chief’s Challenge, a club with a mission to “encourage kindness, respect and civility.” “Jake was a positive influence on all who knew him,” said high school social worker Joanne Waters, adviser of Chief’s Challenge. “He always had a smile and a friendly way about him that made others feel comfortable when meeting him. The event in his honor was a
huge success and the Brice family was overwhelmed by the generosity and support.” Raffle tickets for gift baskets were sold throughout the week leading up to the tournament with proceeds going toward the scholarship fund. The winning basketball team was the faculty and staff trio of Matt Cunha, David Doring and Pat O’Reilly who dubbed themselves the “Old Timers.”

EDS Awareness
Ninth-graders at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus raised awareness for a rare disease, Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, on May 4th. The school hosted Zebra Day, and students and staff were encouraged to wear black and white that day. EDS syndromes are a group of connective
tissue disorders that have various affects on the body including frequent dislocation of joints, stretchy skin, easy scarring and chronic pain. Student Natalie Dahlquist, who has EDS, organized the fundraiser at Ames. She sold zebra-striped ribbons as a way of raising money for the Ehlers-Danlos
Society. Donations will be used for genetic research, as it takes people with EDS on average 10 years to receive a diagnosis. There is no cure, but symptoms can be managed. “It’s really important to spread awareness,” Natalie said. “These donations are really helpful.”

Students at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District used technology to put a new twist on old stories. To prepare for Greek Day, an event that featured food, costumes and a scaled-down version of the Olympics, sixth-graders made their own commercials featuring Greek gods and goddesses. Each
student picked a figure from Greek mythology and had them promote a product or service that was based on their characteristics. For example, the goddess of love and beauty inspired Aphrodite’s Flower Shop, and Poseidon’s Shrimp paid tribute to the god of the sea. The students recorded their short commercials
on Chromebooks through Flipgrid, a digital collaboration platform that allows for the easy creation and sharing of videos. The project was spearheaded by sixth-grader teacher Jennifer D’Angelo, technology learning coach Vickie Ahearn and computer teaching assistant Donna Meyer.

World Language Instruction week for third-graders. The program will expand to fourth grade next year, along with every-otherday instruction for sixthgraders at Berner Middle School in their chosen language of study. “We’re very honored to be recognized by NYSAFLT,” said William Anderson, curriculum associate for world language and ENL. “This award recognizes the hard work that the teachers put in on a daily basis to inspire their students to acquire a second language. It also recognized the support of Superintendent Lucille Iconis and the board of education in making it a priority to help students become global citizens.” Massapequa boasts a high retention rate in the world language program, with a vast majority of students taking courses beyond the one credit required for graduation. According to Mr. Anderson,
about 60 percent of seniors continue with language instruction as the district offers Advanced Placement and other college-level courses. He credited a staff of more than 30 teachers who encourage and inspire students to continue their world language studies. There are opportunities for students to develop their skills beyond the classroom, including language clubs and honor societies at the high school level. Students participate in competitive national language exams and go on field trips that expose them to the cultural aspect of their respective languages such as German language students who attend Sprachfest every spring and Mandarin Chinese language learners who visit the New York Chinese Scholar’s Garden. The district belongs to the Asia Society’s Confucius Classroom Network,
which includes a grant that supports professional development, curriculum resources and field trips. Language teachers are heavily involved in professional organizations and regularly attend or present at conferences. Community outreach is another major part of the
program. The department hosts an evening World Language Festival every March. Students have also traveled abroad to perform community service in countries where people speak the languages they are learning. Mr. Anderson added, “We want our students to
understand the importance of being bilingual and how that will put them in a better position when building their careers.” The district will be presented with the award at the NYSAFLT annual conference in October.

Continued From 5 In order to purchase a beach sticker, residents must bring their driver’s license and vehicle registration and must be in the vehicle they will use to drive to the beach since stickers are placed on the vehicle at the time of purchase. Only residents may purchase beach stickers for Town of Oyster Bay Beaches. Seasonal stickers are $60, which pay for themselves following three visits. “Stickers are accepted at all Town of Oyster Bay beaches, so residents with beach stickers will have the opportunity to really enjoy the wonderful beaches we have here in the Town of Oyster Bay all summer long,” Councilwoman Johnson said. Tobay, Centre Island, Philip B. Healey at Florence Avenue and Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Beaches will open for weekends only beginning Saturday, May 27th. All Town of Oyster Bay beaches will open seven days a week beginning on Saturday, June 24. The beaches will remain open through Labor Day, Monday, September 4th.
