Once an expansive gold coast estate, the course was designed around the natural contours of the land, including open meadows, dense forested areas and natural water bodies. “While Supervisor, Joseph Colby’s vision was to protect and preserve this impressive expanse of beautiful property,” Supervisor Venditto said. “Just as Colby envisioned, this golf course was a perfect example of both aesthetics and function.” Formerly known as the Bruce Estate, the 120 acre parcel of pristine land, now serving as the Town’s golf course, was acquired by the Town in the 1970’s. Although there were many proposed uses for the property, it was Supervisor

The unveiling will take place at the main entrance of the course off South Woods Road in Woodbury. “When the sign for Honorable Joseph Colby Town of Oyster Bay Golf Course is unveiled, it will celebrate an outstanding career in public service,” Supervisor Venditto said. “Joseph Colby has always had the needs of the public as his top priority and has been widely respected for his innovation and responsiveness. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto announced that on Saturday, May 18th, at 11:30 a.m., the Town will conduct a ceremony to officially re-name its golf course in honor of Joseph Colby, a resident of Massapequa Park who served as the Town of Oyster Bay’s 56th Supervisor. The Honorable Joseph Colby was appointed Supervisor in 1977 and was elected to that office five times in the following ten years. He was then elected as a New York State Supreme Court Justice in 1988, a post he held through his retirement from public

architecture. The building has since been beautifully refurbished, while still maintaining its architectural character, and serves as the course’s club house, pro-shop, restaurant and catering hall.

“Joe Colby’s leadership role with respect to advancing the concept of a golf course on the Bruce Estate cannot be understated,” Supervisor Venditto said. “His stewardship was a key component to making

it a reality. Now, thanks to his vision, the golf course bearing his name truly stands as one of the Town’s crown jewels.” Supervisor Venditto said that Joseph Colby, now retired with his wife Adelle and living in Florida, has

Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Steven S. Voyles has graduated from the U.S. Navy’s Nuclear Power School at Naval Nuclear Power Training Command in Goose Creek, S.C. Nuclear Power School is a rigorous six-month course that trains officer and enlisted students in the science and engineering fundamental to the design, operation, and maintenance of naval nuclear propulsion plants. Graduates next undergo additional instruction at a prototype training unit before serving as a Surface Warfare Officer aboard a nuclear-powered surface ship or as an Electronics Technician aboard a nuclear-powered submarine. Voyles has served in the military for one year. He is the son of Chuck Voyles of Massapequa, and Nancy Voyles of Lindenhurst. The petty officer third class is a 2006 graduate of Lindenhurst High School.

Sunshine & Socializing By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As I sit here on deadline, writing my column at the eleventh hour – as usual – is it wrong that the only thought I have is how I would rather be lying on the beach, soaking up the sun, on this fine spring day? Nothing against work – it just tends to conflict with the nice weather, you know? Sure, summer isn’t even officially underway yet, but the signs are everywhere. Concert schedules are out, vacations are being planned, baseball is in full swing – before you know it, it will be time to break out the

BBQ and open the pool for the first summer soiree. School? Work? Eh, plenty of time for that in the winter. Now it’s just a matter of coordinating all those fun summer plans, which is often easier said than done. Is it just me, or has it become increasingly difficult to set anything in stone? No matter the amount of advance notice, things always seem to fall through at the last second. Me, when I make plans, I stick with them. Barring an unexpected emergency, there is really no legitimate reason to cancel on someone. Call it a pet peeve, but there’s nothing worse

than looking forward to something only to have it cancelled. Kind of makes you not want to even bother. It’s almost better to play it by ear, see how it goes… and if things fall into place – great. If not, at least you didn’t waste your time getting your hopes up, right? I think that will be my mantra for this summer. Nice and relaxing. No stress, no aggravation, just enjoyment. And if, when all is said and done, that means lying on the beach by myself…so be it. I can think of worse things. See ya on the sand!

Our Massapequa Chamber of Commerce Street Fair, was blessed with perfect sunshine and packed with people enjoying the entertainment, music, rides, vendors, and assortment of foods and refreshments. This is the Chamber’s 65th Anniversary and First Street Fair entirely made possible through the generosity of our Sponsors and The Town of Oyster Bay.

On Saturday our local students performed displaying their talents with music, karate, and dance performances. Rides, games, vendors, delicious foods and live bands were filled along Veterans Blvd. Sunday was the MAIN EVENT packed with over 75 vendors on Broadway with strolling live entertainment, a petting zoo, pony rides, magic by John Lepre and Tin Can the Clown. In addition, B-103’s DJ, The Wiseman provided live broadcasts throughout the day. I would like to thank all the people who enabled this Street Fair to become a Classic Massapequa Event: Our Chairman, Past President and “Creator” Joe Basile, Co-Chair & Past President Bob Rubino who worked tirelessly along with our old timer Festival Veterans, Past Presidents Phyllis Doria and Robert R. Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI), the leading service provider for children and adults with autism on Long Island, will be dancing for a cause during Autism Awareness Month. Adults served by DDI will be partnering up with students of Vic D’Amore’s American Studio of Performing Arts to produce Dancing for Autism 2, Broadway Nights at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 7th at the Kings Park High School Auditorium. Tickets will be sold at $10 general admission or $7 for senior citizens and children under 12 to benefit DDI’s Adult Day Program. There will also be a special advance ticket package for $25 that will include special seating, a commemorative DVD of last year’s event, candy and custom event program. DDI’s Day Programs serve adults with developmental disabilities and autism at seven locations throughout Suffolk County. Day programs assist adults served by DDI with education, personal skills development, recreation and job training services to help prepare each individual to become productive members of the community in which they reside. The dance program originated with Melissa Espinal and Evens Bourisquot. Melissa is not only a student at the dance studio, but a DDI employee as well. And in the silence, silhouetted by the setting sun, I say vespers. A sudden parting of the living canopy; I am engulfed in brilliant radiance; a transubstantiation of my spirit into the god light.

Keynote speaker DawnMarie Kotsonis, auctioneer, emcee and fundraising consultant, kicked off the event with an amusing story about how her parents wanted her to become a court reporter, but while she was in college preparing to become a teacher, she

took a temporary job with an auctioneer that changed her life. Putting her skills to action, Kotsonis illustrated what an auction is like by giving each student an envelope with fake money and auctioning off three Macbook computers to the highest bidders: Erin Enright, Christina McVicar, and Victoria Remi. Kotsonis underscored the importance of taking

charge of your education, working hard in and out of school, and being the steward of your own success. “Having our alumni take the time to share career advice is an invaluable experience for our students,” said Katherine Knoepffler, who coordinated the event with Christine Poggioli. “Special thanks go out to alumnus Mr. David Riederman, who was instrumental in contacting alumni to take part in the event.” The Massapequa Partnership for Career Development, an advisory board set up to help students bridge the gap between school and the workplace, and the Ames Campus also extend their gratitude to all those

involved in making Career Day a huge success. As a follow-up to Career Day, teachers Alyssa Levine and Karen Matros, coordinated several community service events, which provided valuable, hands-on experience for nearly 100 students. They interacted with residents at The Bristol Assisted Living Facility, baked desserts for residents of Ronald

McDonald House, where families of sick children stay while their children receive medical treatment; assisted staff members at the United Cerebral Palsy of Nassau County, assisted with activities for preschool children with special needs at ACDS of Plainview, and beautified Massapequa Lake, a historic community landmark.

Beach Stickers Available Town of Oyster Bay Councilman Joe Pinto reminds residents that seasonal beach stickers may be purchased beginning on Saturday, May 11th, so that Town residents may get their beach stickers ahead of time and avoid the rush during the Memorial Day weekend, when some Town of Oyster Bay beaches will open for weekends. “So many residents

enjoy the beautiful beaches that we have here in the Town of Oyster Bay and eagerly look forward to the first opportunity to enjoy those beaches during the Memorial Day weekend,” Councilman Pinto said. “Town residents, who purchase a Town beach sticker in advance of the beaches opening, will avoid the possibility of waiting in line during opening

weekend.” The Councilman announced that beach stickers will be for sale daily, beginning on May 11th, at Tobay Beach, John J. Burns Town Park in Massapequa and Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park and Beach in Oyster Bay from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. and from 1 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. In order to purchase a beach sticker,

residents must bring their driver’s license and vehicle registration. In addition, residents must come in the vehicle they will be driving to the beaches as stickers are affixed to vehicles at the time of purchase. “Fun-filled days at Town of Oyster Bay beaches are not far off and the Town’s beach sticker is a great value,” added Councilman Pinto. “It may be used at

all seven Town of Oyster Bay beaches, so residents will have an opportunity to really enjoy the wonderful beaches we have here in the Town of Oyster Bay throughout the summer.” Tobay, Centre Island, Philip B. Healey at Florence Avenue and Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Beaches will be opening for weekends only on Saturday, May 25th.

All Town of Oyster Bay beaches will open seven days a week beginning on Saturday, June 22nd. The beaches will remain open through Labor Day, Monday, September 2nd. For more information, contact the Beach Division of the Town of Oyster Bay Parks Department at 516.797.4110.
