The 6th Annual A Day At The Races will be held on Saturday, June 21st, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Belmont Racetrack. This premiere social event helps fund the MDA Summer Camp program. The local MDA Summer Camp is July 19th through 25th in Center Moriches, NY and provides children age 6-17, from Long Island, the Boroughs and Westchester areas, who are living with neuromuscular disease a one-week sleepover camp where they can make memories that will last a lifetime. The cost to send just one kid to camp is over $800. MDA picks up the tab for all of our campers, and receives no government funding. MDA Summer Camp can take place thanks to the generous donations provided through generous donors and great programs like A Day At The Races.

One Of Those Days By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Did you ever have one of those days when... well, let’s just leave it at that. We’ve all surely had them, whatever it is they entail, which usually leads to unnecessary levels of irritation and aggravation. And, more often than not, we are quick to blame others for the series of events which unfolds. Seems only fair. Maybe there is something to that old “got up on the wrong side of the bed” excuse; perhaps our days are destined to
progress precisely how our respective moods dictate. If this is true, then we may as well just crawl back under the covers and call it a day, no? No sense even trying to give it a go and turn things around. Or so many would have you believe… The thing is, if you want to walk around being miserable, go for it. But is it really necessary to “spread the joy” as it were and ensure that everyone you come in contact with is similarly infected with your dark pessimism? Does misery truly love company that much? I think not.
Why the rant on this particular occasion? Just timely observations is all – as one black cloud-carrying individual after another passes through, it is all one can do to stay focused on the task at hand. And that is – to live each and every day to the fullest, to do at least one thing exclusively for yourself and to refuse to let others drag you down into the abyss alongside them. The words are simple enough…now to put them into practice so that “one of those days” doesn’t become every day.

During the weeks of March 31st through April 11th, students at Birch Lane Elementary school were doing much more than just jumping rope in physical education class they were raising money for the American Heart Association. In celebration of Birch Lane’s efforts and
amazing fundraising contributions of $9,739.09 to the American Heart Association, they celebrated their achievements by having over 100 students participate in the 2nd Annual Jump Rope for Heart Night Event for 4th, 5th and 6th grade students. The event was held at Berner Middle School on
Wednesday, April 30th. Special thanks to Fairfield and Lockhart for joining in the celebration and promoting the importance of living an active and healthy lifestyle, all while making a difference in the lives of people they never met.

Four Massapequa High School students were honored for their achievements in academics, athletics, community service or school leadership with a 2014 Youth Leadership Award from Senator Kemp Hannon. Junior Nicholas Petrini, who won for high academic achievement, takes a rigorous courseload and is a member of National Honor Society, Mathletes, and plays the trumpet in the high school band. Sophomore Andrew Ditzel, who was recognized for
athleticism, plays junior varsity baseball and soccer, is part of a traveling baseball team and plays intramural basketball. Junior Teresa Blando was awarded for community service. Teresa helps teach religion at Maria Regina Church and participates in numerous community service projects, from working with children, to raising funds for victims of tragedies in her community, to raising awareness about social issues through her Girl Scout Troop. She is currently working on her
Gold Award project, Girl Scout’s highest honor. Junior Courtney Taylor was honored for leadership among her peers. She is President of the Drama Club and has had an acting role in each fall and spring high school theatre production during her high school career. She is also a regular contributor to the art and literary magazine “Visions.” The winners received their awards at a recent ceremony at East Meadow Library.
Good Practice Fairfield Elementary School orchestra students in grades 4-6 turned their “music into meals” by raising more than $580 for Long Island Cares Inc.-The Harry Chapin Food Bank. They raised the funds by participating in a “Turn
Your Music Into Meals” Practice-A-Thon under the direction of orchestra teacher Pam Kronowitz. Students obtained commitments from friends and family who agreed to pay the students for each minute they practiced
their instruments. The effort coincided with Music In Our Schools month and not only raised funds for a great cause but improved the skills of students in the process.

Teaching in pairs, “many “heroes” choose to teach in the elementary school they attended and some even teach in the teacher’s class that they had,” DeLury said. “It gives them a chance to see how much planning is involved with teaching, how to manage a class, differentiate their lesson and work with students with disabilities. They are exhausted by the end of the day, but they always say how

They call them High School Heroes — students in grades 10-12 who train to teach second-grade classes for a day in the Massapequa School District. The opportunity, offered through the School-toCareer Office at Massapequa High School, is designed for students who are thinking of pursuing a career in education and looking for real-world experience to help them decide if the profession is for them. Now in its 6th year, the program has soared in popularity since its inception, climbing to 62 participants this year, according to School-To-Career Coordinator Denise DeLury. Students use lessons from Junior Achievement, a non-profit organization that provides hands-on curriculum, and are trained after school by DeLury. “We use a unit titled ‘My Community’ and it consists of five fun, hands-on lessons to teach the students about workers, the work they perform, why workers are paid, what taxes are and how they are used, and how and where to save money,” DeLury said. “The second-grade teachers love it because it aligns very nicely with the curriculum.” “My second graders absolutely love this experience!” said Donna Crowley, second-grade teacher at Fairfield Elementary School. “They benefit greatly from the well-organized social studies lessons based on communities and cooperative learning.”
