With the help of Nassau County Legislator James Kennedy, Massapequa Takes Action Coalition (MTAC) hosted a successful cleanup event of the Massapequa Preserve on Saturday, April 17. MTAC was joined by its partners, the New York National Guard Counterdrug Task Force, the Nassau

County Police Department and the Massapequa Elks Lodge #2162, as well as a large number of community residents. Youth organizations such as the Girl Scouts, Daisy Troop #2347 and the Boy Scouts Troop #691 were also in attendance at last weekend’s event.

Nassau County Legislator James Kennedy stated, “It was wonderful to see such a large group of youth and adults all working together toward a common goal of keeping our community safe”. “The National Guard was happy to see such a great turn out at the event. We

collected drug paraphernalia and are hoping to get data to support MTAC’s initiatives to address underage drinking and youth substance use in the Massapequas,” added Staff Sergeant Jessica Alese of the New York National Guard Counterdrug Task Force. “The Boy Scouts enjoyed going into the Massapequa Preserve to clean it up. It was also good for them to observe what types of trash was found,” stated Walter Cook,

Adult leaders in each group picked up any drug paraphernalia that was found which was later given to the National Guard. With the help of everyone who attended, we were able to collect 10 bags of trash which was disposed of with help from Nassau County.

Hope House Ministries is a non-profit organization located in Port Jefferson. They provide compassionate, comprehensive and competent care for the poor, the marginal and the wounded among us. This commitment is woven in the Gospel vision that all life is sacred and every human person is unique and has the right to be respected and protected. They have accomplished much over the 40+ years they have been helping others with minimal financial assistance from federal, state or county agencies. They depend on the generosity of private contributions, fundraising events and corporate donations. Hope House Ministries services people in both Nassau County and Suffolk County, offering services free of charge. Together, their staff and volunteers have created an empowering sense of family and community that are the change agents, helping young people grow in self-discipline, critical thinking, problem solving skills and personal responsibility. There are so many ways that this non-profit can truly help you get your life on a better track. Additionally, there are plenty of ways for people to get involved in helping others through volunteering. Over the past 40 years, thousands of people have donated their time and talent to help this organization reach those in need. In 2013, the founder of Hope House Ministries approached long-time supporters of this organization, Barbara and Arti, with an idea of a retail space that could bring in needed funds for Little Portion Frirary, a home which houses 65 young men in recovery of drug and alcohol addiction that is ran by Hope House Ministries. The hope was that the proceeds that would potentially be brought in from a retail space could pay for these young men’s college classes, food, utilities and transportation costs. Some years later, the perfect location for a store was found and they decided to open up a beautiful boutique there. Since their organization is all about second chances, they called it Hope

Springs Eternal Second Chance Boutique. This boutique is open to the public MondaySaturday from 11AM-5PM. You can expect to ﬁnd beautiful items for sale here, such as clothing (some still with tags on them), household goods, and furniture. They only accept very gently used items and everything is cleaned and prepared for sale by a team of dedicated volunteers (the boutique is operated by volunteers only)! The selﬂess efforts of their volunteers truly makes the store feel warm and inviting. After rent and utilities are paid, all the rest of the proceeds go directly to the organization, which helps those in need. In addition to that, the boutique makes many homeless individuals feel loved and cared for by giving them items of clothing free of charge and allowing them to use their bathroom when needed. If you are looking to make a difference right here on Long Island or if you are just looking for a special something, stop by the boutique located at 19 Cherub Lane in Port Jefferson Station and make a purchase! “Alhambra Park has long been a favorite destination for south shore residents and the overall experience will be better than ever before once these improvements are complete,” said Supervisor Saladino. “We were awarded millions in federal funds to mitigate flooding and provide for water quality improvements while bringing a facelift to the park and improving its overall appeal. Whether you

enjoy a picnic, kayaking or walking the boardwalk, Alhambra Park will be a favorite destination for you.” New bulkhead is being installed, drainage improvements are being made and green infrastructure is being utilized to reduce flooding. The plan uses bio-retention areas to naturally treat and filter stormwater runoff thereby removing pollutants prior

to the waters returning to our aquifers. To enhance safety and security, security cameras will be placed on site and a timber floating dock is being installed for use by the Town’s Bay Constables and the Nassau County Police Department Marine Bureau. To provide for recreational opportunity, this Park will also feature access to the South Shore Blueway Trail with a kayak and canoe launching area.

Collection Drive Launched to Support Birthday Parties for Homeless Children support the charitable efforts of Birthday Wishes of Long Island, a notfor-profit organization located in Hicksville. Through the efforts of volunteers and donations, the organization provides birthday parties to over 1,250 homeless children

each year, including gifts, homemade cupcakes, goody bags, activities and crafts. “Birthday Wishes of Long Island is a wonderful organization comprised of giving and caring volunteers who help bring smiles to the face

An Earth Day Commitment To Recycling Keeping the planet clean is a goal for students at East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, and for Earth Day they identified

ways they can do their part. Kindergartners in Maureen Walsh’s class learned about recycling and why it’s important.

They made a “Lend a Hand, Help the Earth” bulletin board. The background was recycled newspapers and the border was other recycled

materials including pieces of cardboard boxes, paper bags and plastic containers. The center of the display was a large blue and green image of the Earth made from their handprints.

On each side was student writing, in which they identified the ways they can lend a hand to help their planet. Students throughout the school participated in the New York State

Senate Earth Day poster celebration. The theme was “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.” Students were encouraged to come up with designs that emphasize the importance of recycling and waste reduction.
