They set up a bin in the lobby, which was almost always full thanks to their promotion efforts. Students and staff were encouraged to donate new or gently used reading materials including books for toddlers, children and young adults. First Annual DFQ 22 Mile Duathlon To Be Held May 21 On May 21, 2022 Project9line will host the First Annual DFQ 22 Mile Duathlon at Veterans Memorial Park in Calverton, New York. This first of its kind duathlon will consist of a 9 mile run, followed by a 9 mile ruck and concluding with a 4 mile run. Anyone is able to participate, whether or not you have served our country. For veterans, the transition to civilian life can be extremely difficult, as they tend to go from structure and routine to a lifestyle that is much less rigid. Additionally, the camaraderie they once had may be quickly depleted once they find themselves going through life as a regular civilian. The unfortunate truth is that around 20 veterans a day commit suicide. The 9 mile run is dedicated to those members of the armed services that we’ve

lost in combat. The 9 mile ruck is to remember those lost to suicide. The final 4 mile run is dedicated to each runner, so they can celebrate their achievements and reflect on some things they have not quit on. As a non-profit organization, Project9line supports veterans by providing avenues for them to communicate their experiences and express themselves through the arts and activities. This 22 Mile Duathlon is a way for them to show that they will never quit supporting the troops and our veterans, and it will start at precisely 7:12am to honor a veteran who committed suicide on July 12, 2011. If you are looking to participate, you can register online up until May 20, 2022 for $150. If you want to participate, but need the funds to do so, there is a fundraising option that

you can choose online when registering, which allows you to register for $0, however you will need to fundraise a minimum of $450 by May 21, 2022. Each participant will receive a race medal, long sleeve shirt and a windbreaker. The first male and first female to finish the duathlon will also receive a DFQ Championship Belt. Additionally, there will be a “Veteran Service Organization Village” at the event, consisting of various booths occupied by organizations that help veterans. Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk www.eoc-suffolk.com The Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk (EOC of Suffolk) is a Patchoguebased non-profit organization that promotes selfsufficiency among low-income families and individuals by revitalizing communities, broadening the minds of children and assisting families in need. While much of EOC of Suffolk’s work is concentrated in Suffolk County, it also operates several programs that serve residents of both Suffolk and Nassau counties. One of those bi-county offerings is the organization’s Housing Counseling Services. As a HUD-approved housing counseling agency, EOC of Suffolk offers a comprehensive array of housing services. Its “Mortgage Default and Foreclosure Prevention Counseling” program provides mortgage counseling for homeowners island-wide who are having difficulty maintaining their mortgage. Many households across the country and across Long Island confront the risk of foreclosure. Last month, foreclosure filings nationwide reached the highest level since the pandemic began in March 2020. More than 30 thousand properties across the U.S. faced foreclosure, a 181 percent jump from March 2021 and a 29 percent increase from February. It was recently reported that about 14,500 Long Island homeowners were at least three months behind on paying their mortgages. The risk of foreclosure has increased when a statewide foreclosure moratorium expired in January.

Counselors can explain how homeowners can work with lenders or agencies on forbearance plans or loan modifications. EOC of Suffolk also offers “Comprehensive Housing Counseling” that helps individuals and families achieve their dream of homeownership. The program provides one-to-one homeownership counseling and group counseling, as well as budget and credit counseling. Finally, the organization also helps current and prospective homeowners through an online, eight-hour “Homebuyer Education Course.” The course helps enrollees determine if homeownership is right for them, how to shop for a home and how to maintain a home. Those completing the course receive a certificate that positions homebuyers to fulfill education requirements for down payment assistance programs. The certificate can also be presented to lenders. The course operates on a convenient and flexible timetable allowing participants to complete it on their own schedule. Town Launches New ‘Art In The Park’ Initiative Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele Johnson invites local artists to participate in the Town’s new ‘Art in the Park’ program, which invites artists and artisans to display and sell their hand-crafted goods. Applications are now available for the event which will be held on Saturday, May 21st at Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park & Beach in Oyster Bay. “We are calling on all local artists and artisans to fill out an application today to take part in this

great opportunity to showcase their items,” said Councilwoman Johnson. “The free event on May 21st will also feature live music, food trucks and activities for kids, making it a fun day for the whole family.” Participants must be 18 or older, and display and sell only their original pieces. No commercial or mass-produced items are permitted. Artists must supply their own 10x10 canopy and additional items required for their space. There is a vast array of visual arts courses, for students entering grades 3-12, including ceramic glazing and design, drawing and painting, decorative arts, fashion design, fiber arts, mixed media, printmaking, sculpture and watercolor techniques. The jewelry class is being revamped as students will now be making jewelry that they design themselves. The iPad Claymation course will be offered in beginner and intermediate levels. New camps include mosaic art and tie-dye crafts. Musical theater kicks off with a four-day theater boot camp for students entering grades 8-12 that focuses on the audition process. After that, there will be backto-back two-week musical theater workshops, for grades 4-12, each culminating with a group production. “We’re trying to branch

out to expand our offerings to our youngest students and to provide our oldest students with some camps that are just for them,” said Jessica Wyman, coordinator of the Summer Fine Arts camp. The program runs from July 5 to Aug. 5. Camps are open to any student living within the Massapequa School District. All classes will be held in air conditioned spaces at Massapequa High School, and will be taught by certified teachers with support from college and high school level student assistants. Each camp concludes with an in-person performance or art exhibit for families. Online registration for the Massapequa School District’s Summer Fine Arts program begins on Tuesday, May 24 at 9 a.m. There are several new camps this year, in addition to longstanding music, art and theater courses. Beginner and intermediate band and orchestra lessons are back, with a pair of twoweek sessions for students in grades 4 and up. Other staples of the summer music program include acoustic guitar lessons, jazz band, rock orchestra, an Irish music workshop and a ukulele course. There are several new music offerings, including a two-week recording technology class, in which each student can create and record a song. PSEG Long Island Reminds You To Call 811 Before You Dig

SEG Long Island reminds customers, contractors and excavators to always call 811 before digging to ensure underground pipelines, conduits, wires and cables are properly marked out. Every digging project, even a small project like planting a tree or building a deck, requires a call to 811. It’s the law. The call is free and the mark-out service is free. The call must be made whether the job is being performed by a professional or a doit-yourselfer. Striking an underground electrical line can cause serious injury and outages, and result in repair costs and ﬁnes. “Spring’s warmer temperatures make it a perfect time for starting improvements to our homes and businesses. Calling 811 ahead of time helps protect underground utility lines and, more importantly, the safety of anyone digging,” said Michael Sullivan, PSEG Long Island’s vice president of Transmission and Distribution Operations. “We are glad to see that our customers are getting the message. Last year there were more than 240,000 mark-out requests in our service area, and so far this year, there have been more than 48,000 requests to 811.” According to Common Ground Alliance, a member-driven association of nearly 1,800 individuals and 250 member companies in every facet of the underground utility industry, 40% of active diggers in North America do not call 811 because they think their project is too shallow to require it. All digging projects require a call to 811.

A free call to 811 in the service area automatically connects the caller to the local New York one-call center, which collects information about digging projects. The one-call center then provides the information to the utility companies, which send representatives to mark the locations of nearby underground lines with flags, paint or both. Once lines have been properly marked and confirmation from all of the utility owners is received, projects may proceed as long as caution is used around the marked areas. Here’s important information to consider: · Calling 811 before digging reduces the chances of damaging an underground line to less than 1%. · Underground gas and electric lines are everywhere, even on private properties. These facilities can be easily damaged if dug into, with the potential to cause serious injuries. Digging into these lines can also disrupt vital utility services, resulting in costly delays, expensive repairs and environmental or property damage. Whether the job is a major home improvement project or something as simple as a fence or mailbox post, a call to 811 must be placed beforehand to determine where it’s safe to dig. Call 811 at least two business days before the commencement of each job to have underground pipes, wires and equipment located. Each facility owner must respond by providing the excavator with a positive confirmation indicating that marks are in place where utility lines are

KiDS NEED MoRE Charity Drive-In Movie The parking lot was packed at Costello’s Ace Hardware of Copiague on Saturday, April 30th, for the monthly KiDS NEED MoRE Charity Drive-In Movie featuring Spider-Man No Way Home. Folks came for a donation of any amount. All proceeds benefit local kids coping with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. Melissa Firmes, President of the Copiague Chamber of Commerce, Executive Director, and one of the co-founders of KiDS NEED MoRE, explained, “we initially launched our monthly drive-in movie series at Ace in Copiague when COVID hit so that we could give folks in the community a free night outside that was safe, comfortable and most of all fun. People loved it so much and by popular demand, we keep doing it.” Co-founder of KiDS NEED

MoRE, Johnny Ray added, “it is great to serve the community and see folks coming together having a great time for a great cause.” Local Copiague Chamber of Commerce business members generously supported the event with donations and services that made it such a success. Joe’s Pizza donated all the food. Joe Maguire of New York Life sponsored the event. South Shore Mailroom & Shipping provided movie memorabilia for the raffle. Al Littman and the helpful hardware folks at Costello’s Ace Hardware of Copiague not only hosted the event but generously donated a Weber Genesis II grill to raffle as well as provided food and invaluable assistance running the show. Venom Lash also donated a $100 gift certificate to support the charity.
