National Recognition St. John the Baptist DHS Junior Michael McKenna of Blue Point has received a distinctive award, being named a National Merit Scholarship Semi-Finalist for 2017-2018. Students who are selected as National Merit Scholarship semi-finalists score in the top 96th percentile of all students who take the PSAT exam. Two St. John’s Seniors, Sachin Devasahayam of Commack and Dominick Rich of Bay Shore, were named National Merit Scholarship Finalists as well. Sachin will attend Cornell University in the fall while Dominick plans to attend Johns Hopkins University. In addition, two St. John the Baptist DHS students, Sebastian Clavijo of Central Islip and Jason Rodriguez of Massapequa, have been invited to participate in the College Board National Hispanic Recognition Program. In order to qualify to

participate in the program, students must score in the top 2.5% of all Hispanic students who took the PSAT in their region. Michael McKenna is a member of the Varsity lacrosse team at St. John the Baptist. He is also involved in Mathletes. Sebastian Clavijo is a member of St. John of God Parish in Central Islip. He is actively involved in St. John’s GENESIS Scientific Research program where he is working on a project entitled “Searching for Exotic Sub-Atomic Particles using Data from the Large Hadron Collider.” In his spare time, Sebastian tutors elementary and high school students at Sachem library and volunteers at the Golden Paw animal shelter. Jason Rodriguez is an active member of St. John’s Emerging Technologies Club. He hopes to study Computer Science with a concentration in Computer Programming in college.

A talent show at East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District served two purposes. Not only did it provide students a forum to showcase their many abilities, it also reminded them about the importance of charity. More than 90 fourththrough sixth-grade

students participated in the show on April 25th, which featured two daytime performances and an evening show. Acts featured singing and dance routines. Instead of buying tickets, guests were asked to bring in canned goods and other nonperishable items for the food pantry at Our

Talent for Helping Lady of Lourdes Church in Massapequa Park. Fourthgrade teacher Terri LiCausi, who has been organizing the talent show for the past decade, said this is a time of year when supplies at food pantries run low. She added that this is East Lake’s way of giving back to the community.

Three-dimensional printing, once considered the future of technology, is very much the present in the Massapequa School District. At Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus, enrollment continues to grow in the Design and Draw for Production Class which focuses on the expanding technology. Teacher Matt Burke said the class began more than a decade ago as a handdrafting and mechanical drawing program, and has since evolved to incorporate more technology. Students use industry-standard software such as Inventor, SketchUp and Tinkercad to create their designs, which are then generated on one of three 3-D printers. Mr. Burke said students create several projects

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

I recently celebrated my twelve-year anniversary of working here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers. How quickly time does fly. I can’t say I recall the exact start date of any previous jobs; but this one happened to coincide with my grandmother’s birthday, and so it was instantly commemorated for being just a bit more special. Bittersweet, perhaps, since her passing… but May 2nd shall always hold a place in my heart. It’s funny how we place such importance on certain dates, knowing full well that each subsequent year will bring with it an entirely different set of emotions and circumstances; in effect, no two anniversaries will ever be the same, whether it be of the celebratory or the solemn

sort. Expectations rarely hold up to the standards we have imposed. If you had asked me twelve years ago what I would be doing in the year 2017, I can’t say I would have pinpointed my current situation for what it is; nor would I have had any real inkling as to what would transpire in the decade to come. There is something to be said for longevity, to be sure. As long as you are able to find fulfillment in your daily life, who’s to say what you “should” be doing at any stage? Only you. The calendar is merely a guideline, a means of breaking up the years into more manageable chunks of time by which to take a step back and evaluate. One day at a time, that’s about all most

of us can handle. Some will be good, some bad; but in the end, they will steer your life in a particular direction. That, you can be sure of. Who knows what the next twelve years might bring. Maybe I’ll be writing my 1000th column for South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers. Perhaps I’ll be taking photos as I journey from one corner of the world to another, journaling as I travel to undiscovered lands. Or maybe, I’ll have gotten all that out of my system and decided to settle down in a house in the suburbs with the white picket fence. Who knows. In the meantime, another May 2nd has come and gone, very different from the last and most likely nothing like the next. Only time will tell.

Post Community Park in Massapequa to support the “Shed the Meds” Program for National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, and to safely dispose of unused or expired medications. Battling Bullying

Silence sent a loud message at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District on April 21st, which participated in the National Day of Silence sponsored by the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network. The purpose of the annual day of action is to spread awareness about the effects of bullying and harassment of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students. Through their vow of silence, participants symbolically represent the silencing of those individuals as well as anyone who has been bullied, harassed or called names for real or perceived

differences. Those who signed up received a silence card pledging to remain quiet before school, in between classes and after school. At the end of the day, participants broke the silence by gathering outside the auditorium, writing some of the negative words and phrases that have silenced others on a large black piece of paper, then tearing it up to purge the bad words. Many teachers showed a video and held class discussions the day before about the significance of the event. On the Day of Silence, students and staff were encouraged to wear

black. Social worker Marisa Boulukos and psychologist Dr. Tracy Johnson, advisers of Berner’s Gay Straight Alliance chapter, said the goal is to create a climate in which all students feel safe to grow and learn. “By not speaking,” Ms. Boulukos said, “you send a message of support to the students who have been silenced and a message to those who do the silencing that this is not OK at Berner Middle School.” Students at the Massapequa High School’s main and Ames campuses also took part in the Day of Silence.

Lighting It Up Blue East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District has been participating in the Puzzle Piece Campaign, a fundraising initiative for Autism Speaks, the world’s largest autism science and advocacy organization. The student council has been collecting donations

throughout April, which is Autism Awareness Month. Anyone who made a donation of at least $1 had his or her name written on a paper slip and hung in the lobby or along the main staircase. Each blue and white slip featured an image of a puzzle piece which is the symbol used

to reflect the mystery and complexity of Autism Spectrum Disorder. The school has also designated every Friday of the month as “Light it up Blue” day, in which students and staff were encouraged to wear blue.

LITTLE LEAGUE PARADE - The Massapequa International Little league’s Opening Day Ceremony Parade in Massapequa was recently held, joining coaches, parents and players in celebrating a new season of youth baseball. Among those joining with Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Louis Imbroto were Massapequa Park Mayor Jeffrey Pravato and Massapequa Park Trustee Richard Begandy.

Team Effort Players on the Massapequa High School varsity baseball team say that sometimes it’s OK to join forces with a rival. For the fifth year, the Chiefs, led by coach Thomas Sheedy, have partnered with another Nassau County school to raise money for a good cause. Massapequa played Oceanside High School in a regular season night game at John Burns Park on April 27th. The annual Leukemia and Lymphoma Society charity game served as a fundraiser for the organization, with

both teams supporting the cause. Fans could buy shirts which on the front read “Play Ball for a Cure” and on the back featured the two teams’ logos and “Two Historic Rivals. One Night. One Goal.” Chiefs players were also stationed in the gymnasium lobby during the week of April 24th to sell shirts and collect donations through the Ball for the Wall initiative. Students and staff members who contributed wrote their names on paper baseballs, which were hung across from the gym.

Creating Connections Fundraising for the effort continues on May 6 at Baseball Day when all district baseball teams, from seventh grade through varsity, play at John Burns Park. Once all donations are in, the Diamond Club booster organization sends a check to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Senior baseball player Daniel Gdanski said, “As athletes in Massapequa, we have a responsibility to help the community and the people around us.”

Third-graders recently took a trip to the other side of the world without leaving the comfort of their classrooms at East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. Teachers Annette Ready

and Laura La Torre led a unit on China, part of the social studies curriculum which focuses on cultures around the world. Children from the two classes paired up and used Chromebooks to do research on the country, compiling facts

from various websites and databases. They then completed “All About A Country” posters, which included information on holidays and traditions, population, geographical features and government.

Fifth-graders at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District certainly know the alphabet, but recently found it a little more difficult to get from A to Z. Students in Susan Murphy’s class participated in a STEAM challenge in which they were given a

set amount of materials and had to use it to make every letter. The supplies included paper clips, straws, toothpicks, a clothespin, aluminum foil, rubber bands, string and a pair of scissors. The challenge for each group, Ms. Murphy said, was to determine how to

best utilize the materials to have enough to complete all 26 letters. They were judged on creativity, communication, effective use of materials and the amount of recognizable letters finished within 15 minutes.
