The Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk (EOC of Suffolk), is a nonprofit, communitybased organization that was founded in 1967 as part of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s “Great Society” legislation. EOC of Suffolk promotes self-sufficiency among low-income families and individuals by revitalizing communities, broadening the minds of children and assisting families in need. Formally designated as a “Community Action Agency” by the federal government, it channels block grants from Washington to meet the needs of Long Islanders. While most of EOC’s work takes place in Suffolk County, the organization also provides a number of its services in Nassau County. Three of its initiatives that take place in both of those counties are: 1) The Housing Counseling program, which helps individuals and families achieve their dream of homeownership. 2) Its Developmental Disabilities work, which provides a comprehensive array of services for people with developmental disabilities – all aimed at enhancing their quality of life. 3) The Chronic Health Care Coordination program, which helps individuals manage their own physical health, mental health and social needs in a comprehensive manner. Additionally, five of their many programs offered in Suffolk County include: 1) EOC of Suffolk’s Youth and Adolescent Services, which promotes leadership, healthy decision making, sexual health and pregnancy prevention among local youth. The organization’s after-school programs serve more than 1,000 middle school students daily, providing academic and skill-building activities that promote

vocational and educational growth. 2) The Rapid Rehousing Program, which helps individuals and families experiencing homelessness and aims to return them as quickly as possible to permanent housing within their home communities. EOC of Suffolk team members address and troubleshoot barriers to obtaining and maintaining permanent housing. 3) EOC of Suffolk helps keep neighborhood streets safe though its SNUG (GUNS spelled backwards) Violence Prevention program, which functions in cooperation with residents, private industry and communitybased organizations. SNUG helps identify and defuse community “hot spots”. It also provides mentorship and leadership-oriented services to youth who are gang members or who are at risk of joining gangs. 4) The organization’s Targeted Prevention and Supportive Service Program supports people living with HIV/ AIDS. Clients are treated with respect, dignity, privacy and trust. Services include transportation, consumer advice, assistance obtaining beneﬁts, linkages to substance abuse and mental health services, legal services, health education and testing. 5) Recognizing the importance of childcare for working families, EOC of Suffolk owns and operates three childcare learning centers: Way to Grow in East Patchogue, Montauk Childcare Center and a childcare center at the Family Court complex in Central Islip. Those facilities meet the highest standards of early childhood education. Children participate in activities providing intellectual stimulation and fostering self-reliance and social responsibility. Many of you are aware of the Massapequa Public Library, but are you familiar with the Friends of Massapequa Library? They are independent from the Library and its Board of Trustees. The Friends of Massapequa Library advocate for the library as a life-long learning resource and help promote it as an information and technology center. The Friends fund additional programs, services and some equipment such as donating kindles for each building. They also sponsor public events such as the popular Massapequa

authors evening, Books for Babies giving a free first book to those under a year old and have combined fun and instruction with teaching Hearts card game with yummy chocolates for Valentine’s Day. So why should YOU join the Friends of Massapequa Library? As a member you know that your dues and contributions to the Friends allow them to support different events and to buy extra items that enhance the library offerings. The members are people who live in the Massapequas that love their library and community. There are

several types of yearly memberships: Individual $15; Family - $25; Senior - $10; Veteran - $10; and Organizational - $100. Students also can join for either $5 or 5 hours of service which also satisfies service requirements for many high schools. The Friends welcome volunteers to help at events at the library. John O’Fee, an 8th Grade student at Berner Middle School, won First Place at the Massapequa Lodge and NYS levels for his essay regarding a loved one’s personal journey with alcohol. He wrote about how good people often change when they

become addicted to drugs and shared how some who become addicted to drugs will eventually need them to feel normal - like the rest of us need food. The Massapequa Kiwanis Club is being lauded as one of the most devoted supporters of public education on Long Island. Kiwanis is among 13 honorees to receive the 2022 Nassau BOCES Education Partner award, bestowed annually on those individuals and organizations whose impact on public education in Nassau County can be measured in tangible ways. A strategic education partner with school districts since 1967, Nassau BOCES created the awards program to recognize those who share its mission of ensuring a successful, challenging, caring and safe environment that enables students of all ages and abilities to achieve their maximum potential. These outstanding individuals and organizations have made strides in accomplishing key educational goals embraced by Nassau BOCES, such as ensuring student success. President Michael Mazzola will represent the Massapequa Kiwanis Club when it is honored at the awards gala held in May by the Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation. The Foundation is an independent non-profit organization that raises funds for innovative educational programs that fall outside of the agency’s budget. The Massapequa Kiwanis Club has been serving local schools and community for nearly 75 years. It has worked to fulfill its mission to empower the community and improve the world by making meaningful, lasting differences in the lives of children. To that end, Kiwanis has created countless opportunities for students to dream,

Kiwanis members are role models who demonstrate the importance of giving back to the community through outreach and direct action. The club offers health programs that advocate for and support at-risk individuals. They raise money for veterans, first responders and essential workers, and have provided food deliveries and financial support to 2,000 local families in need. They reassembled an historical 1890 log cabin on-site at John Burns Park, making it useable by community organizations for meetings and special events.They constructed nine tournament-level bocce courts to give students, families and youth groups a place to gather for fun and sportsmanship. The local Kiwanis chapter is an outstanding partner to Massapequa schools, having provided 200 distinct scholarships, as well as a significant amount of grant funds.

They have made a major impact on local education through their contributions to student leadership programs, drug prevention and intervention, mental health awareness, wellness and aftercare, and programs that teach good citizenship, acceptance and kindness. One place Massapequa Kiwanis has made a significant difference is at Nassau BOCES Carman Road School for the physically and developmentally challenged. Over the course of the past 15 years, Kiwanis has greatly enhanced the lives of these students through myriad projects including: building and renovating an adapted minigolf course; contributing materials to the construction of three memorial gardens; helping to create a cozy reading corner with refurbished benches, and seating specifically designed for individuals with physical and sensory challenges; clearing and cleaning overgrown land to build raised flower beds and give students improved garden access; donating hydrangea bushes to plant in the Girl Scout gold butterfly garden; building ramps, shoveling snow and clearing paths for easy entrance and exit. “For nearly three quarters of a century, the Massapequa Kiwanis Club has been an inspiring example to our local schools and community,” wrote the award nominator. “First and foremost, Kiwanis members are devoted to helping our students and supporting our schools. They demonstrate what long-term dedication means through their continued commitment to enriching the lives of our children.”
