13 Triskaidekaphobia: fear of the number 13 I’ve known many people with an aversion to this perceived “unlucky” number, whether serving as a date of particular significance or - the more common superstition - when it should happen to fall on a Friday, of all days. Personally, I’ve taken special care to note any particularly negative occurrences on these infrequent juxtapositions of day and date, with thankfully few to report. Just another day, as they say. And with that, today - May 2nd - I commemorate the 13th anniversary of my start date here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers. Over one dozen years ago, I began my journey into the world of journalism, straight from college. At the time, thirteen years would have certainly seemed like an eternity to spend in any one establishment. Think about
it - even school, which often seems like an infinite chunk of time, is divided into segments of elementary, junior high and senior high. College, if it follows, is usually segmented into four-year intervals. Thirteen years… well that’s an entirely different level of commitment, is it not? And yet, even in the workforce, time tends to separate into stages. It begins with the formative years of finding your footing in a particular field, still unsure of what the job entails and what your responsibilities will include. Everything is new and exciting as you realize - hey, I’m really doing this! These are followed by the years of transition, when positions may be altered, new projects will come and go, and you begin to discover your particular strengths and weaknesses en route to finding your true passion. Thirteen years in, and I
am still in the process of realizing those aspects of the vast field of journalism which really inspire me. I am open to learn, eager to explore and always looking to improve upon those skills I originally honed all those decades ago. I believe this process is never complete; those who have worked in a particular field for twice as long as I have can surely attest to this fact. Who’s to say that anyone has to stay with one particular venture for a lifetime anyway? The world is constantly evolving, as are we; and the nature of most careers tends to necessitate a versatility that didn’t always exist prior. We all have untapped skills to be utilized, curiosities to indulge and talents to cultivate. So, here’s to 13, a number like any other, if you ask me. May it signify all the experience gained thus far, and the adventures yet to unfold.

It all started with a good book... As I sat down with Lisa Gatti, CEO & Founder of Pal-O-Mine Equestrian, Inc., I had the privilege to learn about what her organization does to help those in need, as well as how it all began. PalO-Mine Equestrian is a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations. Lisa’s mother was a special education teacher and her father worked for a book publishing company. She was greatly influenced by both of their professions. Lisa grew up knowing she loved horses, but she really wanted to become a teacher and work with children in need. Her father would often send her books while she was away at college, and one day she received a book titled Palomino, by Danielle Steel. As she read through the pages, she became inspired by what was written about: a ranch that was formed to help people through equine therapy. From that point on, she was certain that was exactly what she wanted to do with her life. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa Gatti opened Pal-O-Mine in 1995 as a 501(C)(3) non-profit. Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today! This organization sits on eight acres, with a 20-stall barn, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a new 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with state-ofthe-art footing and a rider hoisting system, and three outdoor riding arenas. They help an unbelievable amount of people, and their work is truly heartwarming. Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy,
Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Genetic Disorders and Emotional Disturbances. Every day, they have a different school drop off children at their location to benefit from their organization; they also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program specifically designed for military members. If you are someone who faces any sort of disability or an emotional or vulnerable problem, please visit their website to learn more about how they can help you - and don’t hesitate to get help! Volunteers are the backbone of PalO-Mine, and there are many different ways to get involved. All volunteers must be at least 16 years of age, attend a volunteer orientation (orientations are held monthly), complete a training program and be available to volunteer a minimum of four hours per week. Some ways you may volunteer are: working directly with children and adults in lessons, working with therapy horses and performing barn chores, fundraising, and helping with property enhancement and landscaping. Pal-O-Mine has two major fundraising events that are coming up in June. One is their 16th annual Day at the Races, which will be on June 8th at the Belmont Race Track. This is held the day before the Belmont Stakes and is a wonderful outing, offering lunch, a premium open bar and door prizes. Their 10th annual Golf Outing, Par Fore the Horse, will be held on June 25th at Southward Ho Country Club in Bay Shore. This will include golfing, brunch, course refreshments, an open bar, a cocktail hour, dinner, gifts and prizes. Both of these events have sponsorship opportunities and are open to the public (tickets must be purchased). Lastly, Pal-O-Mine features a Wish List on their website, which lists items they use every day that you can donate! Added Robert Garceau, Executive Officer of the Theodore Roosevelt Division, “Cadets might not even have a driver’s license but in training they may be at the helm of a multi-million dollar U.S. Navy warship. The learning and leadership opportunities are quite astounding.” Commander Woodward knows well the inspiration provided by the Naval Sea Cadet program. He served in the U.S. Army, the Department of Defense and as a Federal Agent, but it was his formative years as a teenage Naval Sea Cadet that helped shape his desire for public service. Seventy years ago, the U.S. Navy requested that an organization of young sea cadets be formed to “create a favorable image of the Navy on the part of American youth.” The Theodore Roosevelt Division of the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps follows through with that edict while carrying on Long Island’s rich and enduring maritime heritage. This past weekend, dedicated cadets, ages 13 to 18, rose with the sun, donned their fatigues, and headed for training drills at the U.S. Coast Guard station in East Moriches, as they do one weekend each month. The Naval Sea Cadet program develops cadets’ abilities in seamanship while also instilling in cadets the virtues of good citizenship, moral principles and public service. Cadets hail from all over Suffolk County, with monthly activities ranging from seamanship, map topography and fitness drills, to basic medical training, self-defense and more.And yes, cadets are required to drop and do 10 (push-ups) for training infractions! “The Sea Cadet program stewards seamanship while also inspiring young men and women to reach their

Stamp Out Hunger Island Harvest Food Bank is once again teaming up with the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) and the United States Postal Service (USPS) for the 26th annual Stamp Out Hunger campaign on Saturday, May 12th. As the nation’s largest single-day food drive, postal carriers across the country will collect nonperishable food items donated by generous postal customers. On Long Island, all food collected will help Island Harvest Food Bank to provide supplemental food support to more than 300,000 Long Islanders who are at risk of hunger and food insecurity. “Participating in Stamp Out Hunger is easy,” says Randi Shubin Dresner, president and CEO of Island Harvest Food Bank. “Simply leave nonperishable food items in a bag next to your mailbox before your
regularly scheduled mail delivery on Saturday, May 12th, and your USPS letter carrier will do the rest.” Nonperishable food items needed include canned goods, cereal, pasta, rice, boxed juices and shelf-stable milk (please, no glass items). All food donated on Long Island will help replenish Island Harvest Food Bank’s network of food pantries, soup kitchens and other emergency feeding programs in Nassau and Suffolk counties. “Every donation, no matter how small, helps our neighbors who are struggling to put food on their tables,” said Randi Shubin Dresner. “The National Association of Letter Carriers is pleased to partner with Island Harvest Food Bank and support its efforts in addressing the problem of hunger on Long Island,” said Walter Barton, president, NALC
Branch 6000. “Our Letter Carriers often see the need for food assistance firsthand as part of their daily rounds, and we’re happy to help give back to the community, and provide much-needed food support for the thousands of families affected by hunger here in our local communities.” Since its inception in 1993, Stamp Out Hunger has collected more than 1.5 billion pounds of food nationally to help address the issue of hunger in America. Last year, Stamp Out Hunger netted 71 million pounds of food in 10,000 cities and towns, and in all 50 states plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands. In 2017, Long Islanders donated 268,582 pounds of food to Stamp Out Hunger, which supplemented 223,818 meals.

A new cherry blossom tree is growing in the courtyard of Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District to remind children about the importance of taking care of the earth. The Town of Oyster Bay donated the tree. Supervisor Joseph Saladino told students that when
he was a student at Birch Lane, a tree was planted to mark the very first Earth Day in 1970. He joined Janine Signorile’s secondgrade class in the courtyard on April 20th to admire the new pink flowering tree and cover the roots with dirt so it will be a fixture at the school for a long time. Students learned that trees
are important because they produce oxygen for humans and animals. Supervisor Saladino and Village of Massapequa Park Mayor Jeffrey Pravato also talked with students about the importance of recycling, and showed the items that can be recycled including metal, plastics, newspapers and cardboard.
Protecting the Planet Third-graders in Danielle McCaffery’s class at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District learned that although Earth Day is once a year, they should make an effort to take care of the planet every day. On April 23rd, the day after Earth Day, students shared the different
activities they did over the weekend to protect the planet such as picking up litter, turning off lights, conserving water and riding their bikes instead of traveling in cars. They also read aloud their essays about the importance of Earth Day. Ms. McCaffery’s class is also raising money

Oyster Bay Town Councilman Anthony D. Macagnone today announced that the Town of Oyster Bay is participating in a 2018 Soldier Collection Drive in an effort to gather needed supplies to be sent to the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces serving around the globe. The drive will take place Tuesday, May 1st through Friday, July 6th. “The Town of Oyster Bay is proud to support our hometown heroes by collecting supplies for those stationed around the globe,” said Councilman Macagnone. “Each year, residents and Town employees open their hearts and wallets to purchase muchneeded supplies for those protecting the freedoms we hold dear. This program serves as an important reminder to our uniformed service personnel that their daily sacrifices are not forgotten.”

Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District welcomed composer and producer Brent Daniels during the week of April 16th-20th. Through a partnership with the PTA’s Arts in Education committee, he worked with students
in Janice Abel’s general music classes in teaching them how to create digital music. Mr. Daniels taught students about musical concepts such as loop and sequence, then invited students to record various sounds and phrases.
He used his electronic keyboard to alter those sounds and used them to create an original song for each class. At the end of each session, Mr. Daniels reminded students about the importance of getting a good education.
In recognition of Autism Awareness Month, Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District took part in the Puzzle Piece Campaign in April. During library classes, each student identified six positive character traits that make he or she
unique, and wrote it on a blue paper puzzle piece. The pieces were then hung on a bulletin board in the hallways representing students from kindergarten through fifth grade. The puzzle piece is the symbol used to reflect the mystery and complexity of autism spectrum disorder.
Library media specialists Jacqueline Lee and Claire Mitchell also read books about acceptance to the students with a different selection for each grade, such as “Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon” for fourthgraders.

Building Community Massapequa High School students became teachers for the day as they visited East Lake Elementary School second-graders on April 18th to talk about communities and financial literacy. The Junior Achievement High School Heroes program is a servicelearning project with interactive lessons on community decisionmaking, entrepreneurship, banking and taxation, and giving high school students an opportunity to serve as role models for younger
peers. The second-graders, who study communities as part of their social studies curriculum, learned how different professions exist within a community to create a local economy and support system. High school students led their younger peers in a variety of handson activities. In a lesson that taught them about assembly line versus unit production, the secondgraders worked in groups to make paper doughnuts. They had to create as many as they could in three
minutes, without defects, to sell. The high school students were trained by Denise DeLury, the district’s school to career coordinator, and Lorraine Englander, a program manager with Junior Achievement. Ms. DeLury said that many of the participating students are interested in careers in education and High School Heroes gave them an opportunity to practice lesson planning and classroom management.

Robotics Team Wins Massapequa High School’s robotics team can now add a national championship to its list of accomplishments. Students competed in the CREATE U.S. Open Robotics Championship in Council Bluffs, Iowa from April 2nd-7th. The Robo Chiefs were tournament champions in the Open Division along with Beijing Bayi High School from Beijing, China and DC West Community Schools in Valley, Nebraska. Massapequa was part of a three-team alliance, in which two robots from the group compete in a given match against a pair of robots from another alliance. Competing team members included seniors Victoria Bal, Emily Clugston, Dana Colletti, Evan Donohue, Billy Dougherty, Jessica Monaghan and Alex Schmadtke, under the direction of robotics team advisers Matthew Swanson and Brian Vanek. The students spent several months working after school to build and perfect their robot, repeatedly
testing it in the practice ring across from the robotics classroom. During the competition, they had to move mobile goals, which look like cones, into point zones and stack smaller cones on top. “It was really a fun experience, how people from all different areas can come together for a friendly competition,” Billy said. “Our robot performed well and it was a really great way for us to end our time in the robotics club.” Added Victoria of the competition, “You see so many different ideas. It’s cool to see how everyone can approach the same goal in a different way.” Alex and Billy operated the controls during the tournament. They explained that there were a lot of mechanisms that all had to work simultaneously on the robot, making it a very challenging task. Members of the robotics team say several of the courses they have taken in high school were beneficial including robotics, principles of engineering, automotive maintenance, computer aided design and
introduction to JavaScript. Success in the competition required strong knowledge in both constructing and programming their robot. Dana explained that she had to write several hundred lines of code. The Robo Chiefs qualified for the national competition because of its performance at the Vex Robotics zone regional qualifier at Adelphi University in January. They also participated in competitions throughout the season at Farmingdale High School, Freeport High School, East Rockaway High School and The Harvey School in Katonah. At the Vex regional qualifier at East Rockaway, the Robo Chiefs received the Excellence Award, which is given to the top overall team recognizing robot performance and design, teamwork and professionalism. Mr. Swanson and Mr. Vanek said that the national championship is a testament to the hard work and preparation of the students.

Message of Hope Theater arts students from Massapequa High School’s main campus, in partnership with the Chief’s Challenge club, recently visited their younger peers at the Ames Campus to talk about various health and social issues. Topics included bullying, family and relationship issues, learning disabilities, depression, anger and sexuality. The theater arts students in Denise Curiale’s
class wrote, filmed and edited short skits about these topics, which Ames students watched during their health classes. The high school students then visited Ames health classes for follow-up discussions. For one activity, an Ames student had to rip up a piece of paper as their peers shouted out insults. Then, when they shouted out compliments, the student had to try and put the piece of paper back to
together. The purpose was to show them the damage that bullying and namecalling can do to a person. Denise Baldinger, the district’s health chairwoman, said that the purpose of the collaborative program was to show the ninth-graders that there are ways to get help if they are dealing with any of these issues. Hearing it from their own peers, she said, is an effective way to get the message across.

PLANTING A TREE - Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently visited Birch Lane Elementary School in Massapequa where he met with a second grade class, and planted a cherry blossom tree in celebration of Earth Day. In addition to planting the tree, Supervisor Saladino, along with Massapequa Park Mayor and the Town’s Deputy Commissioner of Public Works Jeffrey Pravato, took time to meet with the students and explain to them the importance that recycling plays in protecting the Earth and our environment, and how the Town is leading the way through the new single stream recycling program.
