This morning I was speaking to someone very important in my life and I expressed that I felt as though something was holding me down, making me feel heavy and sad. Yes, I was feeling a bit depressed today. I’ve never been completely comfortable baring my soul to people in my life, instead feeling more at home in the position of helper as opposed to helpee. When, I myself, am struggling, I will rarely venture to confide in someone, and when I do, I expect a lot of the typical platitudes and that’s okay. I know that just because someone loves you, it doesn’t mean they are always going to have just the right words at just the right time. That’s been my job (literally). But I have to say, this one shocked and amazed me. I’ll never doubt the value of a good heart to heart pep talk again. I think I said, “I can’t do my column today, I just can’t. I’m feeling too down in the dumps
(yes, it happens). I thought I was going to be fully supported in throwing in the towel for the week. If I’m being honest, that is what I thought I wanted. Instead, he said to me, “Do you know why I wake up at 4 AM each morning to go to the gym before I start my day?” I was tempted to say, “Um, because you’re crazy?” I get up at 6 AM, and as you all know, 6 AM to 7 AM is my sacred morning hour, but 4 AM would never happen. A girl needs her sleep! My friend continued, “I get up at 4 AM each day to go to the gym and purposely lift weight that drags me down and offers me resistance so that I can overcome that resistance, lift myself back up and build more muscle.” I knew he was a workout devotee, but I must admit, I never thought of it as a metaphor for life. And to think I’ve watched every Rocky movie ever made. I’ve had plenty of moments in my life where things were so smooth and I was so ridiculously blessed that being happy, enthusiastic and inspired was a no-brainer. What I have humbly
come to realize is that when you preach from a privileged soapbox, you can only reach so far. Yes, the last several months have been filled with some interesting ups and downs and some things that haven’t felt so pleasant. They have also been filled with massive growth and perspective, and yes, I have been developing a lot of new muscles. I was not let off the hook this morning. The beautiful thing is that not having to write was what I wanted, but not what I needed in order to grow. I needed to be stretched past my comfort zone today, lovingly yet firmly. We all fall into that trap at times, where we are looking for excuses to be less than great. At that moment this morning, someone loved me enough to remind me that although my reason to not want to write this particular column was valid, it would not take me where I needed, and ultimately wanted, to go. Pushing past some temporary discomfort to get the job done would.

During a recent lesson on community in second-grade classrooms at Unqua Elementary School, it was fitting that Massapequa High School students served as the instructors. The High School Heroes program, through Junior Achievement, focused on a variety of concepts relating to local and global communities such as business and careers, finances, government, innovation and voting. The second graders participated in numerous hands-on activities. They learned about the production of goods by opening up a doughnut shop and forming an assembly line to make their product. Teams competed to see who could put the most doughnut stickers together. In making a decision tree, students had $500 in fictitious money, and had to decide how to spend it on a school beautification initiative. They weighed the pros and cons of a recycling program, butterfly garden and art display. Children also received fake money and watched as the high school students came and took some of it away, to

The Junior Chiefs Helping Hands club created the “McKenna Says” board with messages of encouragement and kindness. To foster collaboration, first-grade students partnered with their fifth-grade buddies to make posters about teamwork. Throughout the week, students were asked to wear clothing that matched the theme such
as shirts with positive messages, superhero shirts and blue and gold attire. There were also songs tied to the daily theme like “We’re All in This Together” for Teamwork Friday. “Each day had a different way for students to view themselves, with the goal of having a more positive outlook,” Assistant Principal Mary Anne Ferraro said. “There was just a positive vibe the whole week, and the students became more conscientious how they speak and the decisions they are making.”

For the 11th consecutive year, the Massapequa School District was recognized for its music program by the National Association of Music Merchants Foundation. Massapequa was one of 623 school districts nationwide that earned the Best Communities for Music Education distinction in 2019. For the past 20 years, the Best Communities for Music Education program has acknowledged schools and districts across the country for their commitment to and support of music education in schools. The survey measured a variety of factors, including budgetary commitment to music, opportunities
to learn music, the presence of highly qualified music teachers, adherence to state and national standards, types of musical experiences offered and opportunities for performance and competition. The district offers general music instruction beginning in kindergarten and students learn to play the recorder in third grade. Upon entering fourth grade, children can select an instrument to play in the band or orchestra through high school, and also join the chorus. Concerts throughout the year allow students to share their talents with their classmates, families and community members. Extracurricular
opportunities include after-school ensembles and various musical theater productions, while the Summer Fine Arts program allows for yearround music instruction. During the 2018-19 school year, more than 100 student musicians from the elementary, middle and high school levels were selected to the 2019 All-County Music Festival, hosted by the Nassau Music Educators Association. Thirteen students were chosen for Long Island String Festival Association ensembles and six Massapequa High School vocalists represented the district at the 2019 AllEastern Honors Ensemble sponsored by NMEA.
A Kids Tale By Kids The tale of an orphan girl named Annie came to Lockhart Elementary School stage for two performances on March 29. A cast of 70 fourth and fifth grade students starred in “Annie Kids,” adapted from the Tony Award-winning musical and based upon the Little Orphan Annie comic strip. Aliya Hassett starred as Annie in the matinee with
Giavanna Pizzo portraying the title role in the evening show. Additional leads included Alexandra Nutter as Miss Hannigan, Aedan Fitzsimmons as Lt. Ward, Michael Mark as Rooster, Avery Gilbert as Lily, Sophia Park as Grace and Emma Natale as Tessie. The show, set in the 1930s, featured wellknown songs such as “Hard Knock Life,” “Tomorrow,”
“NYC” and “Easy Street.” Music teachers Brittany Bissonnette and Jessica Wyman were the codirectors, supported by stage manager Keith Stanley, tech manager Kathleen Dyckman and set designers Claire Merz and Luke Merz. The set, stage and tech crews are comprised of current and former Lockhart students.

PLENTY OF SPIRIT - Spirit Week, an annual tradition at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District, culminated with sports day on March 29. Students were encouraged to represent their favorite professional teams or local Massapequa teams. The sixth grade won the grade-level competition to earn the Spirit Week Cup. Each sixth-grade homeroom will get to host the cup for a day. Other themes during the week, which included pajama day and the red, white and blue color war. Not only does recycling prevent items from ending up in landfills, it reduces the amount of raw materials used to make new products. Here are some myths and facts about recycling commonly used food and beverage cartons: Myth: Cartons can’t be recycled. Fact: Cartons are certainly recyclable. They can be turned into new products, such as paper towels, tissues and writing paper. They can also be turned into environmentally friendly
building materials, in a process that uses no water or chemicals. Myth: If a package doesn’t have a recycling logo on it, it’s not recyclable. Fact: What can and can’t be recycled varies by community and is primarily dependent on the recycling facility. Cartons can carry the standard “Please Recycle” logo under the Federal Trade Commission’s green guidelines. It’s best to contact your community or check its website to find out what can and can’t be recycled. Myth: You have to put your recyclables in a
plastic bag and then in your recycling bin. Fact: Plastic bags can jam up equipment at recycling centers, slowing everything down and potentially preventing recyclables from getting recycled. Instead, place materials loosely in recycling bins or carts. Myth: You have to crush cartons and remove the caps and straws before recycling them. Fact: Just empty any remaining product. No crushing is required, and the caps can be left on. You may want to stuff the straws back into the carton to make sure they don’t become litter.

Let's Make Dirty Rice Dirty Rice is a fun and variant rice dish, with plenty of room for improvisation. Even better, you can make a vegan version or incorporate sausage into the dish. What You Will Need
1 cup White Rice 1 generous dash of turmeric 1 dash of black pepper 1 dash of sea salt Finely chopped half red pepper Finely chopped half green pepper Finely chopped portabello mushrooms 1/4 cup lentils 1/4 cup black eyed peas 1/2 cup green peas Finely chopped sausage (whatever kind you prefer) to taste (optional)
Preparation Soak lentils and black eyed peas together in a medium stovetop pot of tepid water for 30 minutes to soften them. Then rinse them and place them in fresh water, letting them simmer on medium heat for approx. 45 minutes or until they are soft, but still intact. Set aside and cover to retain heat. Boil and then simmer rice, according
to box instructions. Rice typically boils vigorously for 1 minute and then simmers on low heat with a closed lid for approx. 25 minutes. Chop up all veggies and steam on the stove top until they are all tender, yet firm. Add and mix turmeric, black pepper and salt into rice as it is cooking. Rice should turn yellow. Microwave frozen, steam-able green peas for speed. Add all vegetables, along with lentils and black eyed peas, into the rice and stir. If desired, cut up your sausage into round disked slices and then cut those slices into fourths. If pre-cooked, add into rice mixture. If not, cook first and then add. Let entire rice mixture continue to heat on low heat with lid, on the stove top for 20 more minutes, and enjoy! The Charity of the Month for May is: Bikers Against Child Abuse (BACA) www.BACAworld.org
Bikers Against Child Abuse is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization. BACA formed with the intent to create a safer environment for abused children. They exist as a body of bikers to empower children not to feel afraid of the world in which they live. They stand ready to lend support to their wounded friends by involving them with an established, united organization. BACA works in conjunction with local and state officials who are already in place to protect children. BACA receives calls on their helpline (631-408-8218), which is taken by the Chapter Child Liaison. This member contacts the family and an initial visit is organized to meet the guardian and child at their home or another location. Following this visit, two BACA members are assigned as “Primaries” to the child who remain available for contact 24/7/365. A ride is then organized for the members of the Chapter to meet the child. This is when a ceremony is performed to take the child into the BACA family, which is where the empowerment begins. BACA supports each child according to their individual needs. Some services available for the child and their family include a physical presence at the home (24/7 if needed), visiting the child at school, escorting the child to and from court, and they even maintain a therapy fund for children needing assistance. The members of BACA are all volunteers that do not receive payment of any kind, and they also pay for all their own expenses. They will tell you their payment is far more significant than money. Their payment is seeing first hand how their involvement empowers children and contributes to their
healing.
Although BACA Members have witnessed how well their process works for many years, no one needs to take their word for it any longer because a four year independent study by professionals in the field, recently revealed that BACA children achieve “statistically significant improvements” in all behavioral and emotional categories. This greatly contributes to expediting the overall healing of the child on many levels, so their fear is quickly replaced with confidence. This conclusive study was published in the International Journal of “Evaluation and Program Planning” and can be found in its entirety on the BACA website. To date, their success with abused children has enabled BACA to spread to 17 countries, 47 states and thousands of members. If you are interested in becoming a BACA member you must meet certain requirements. Some of them are that you have regular access to a motorcycle, are 18 years or older, can pass an NCIC fingerprint check, can attend monthly meetings and Chapter events and have a desire to help abused children. If you meet the basic criteria, you can eventually become a Cleared Supporter, which is when you are assigned a Patched Member as your “Sponsor”. This member guides you through extensive training, which goes on for a minimum of at least one year before you can be considered eligible to become a full Patched Member.
