In response to the growing crises among lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth, the center created the Pride for Youth program. PFY services include individual, family and group counseling, sexual health services (including HIV testing), disease and unintended pregnancy prevention, and youth leadership opportunities. The cornerstone of PFY is The Coffeehouse, a weekly drop-in center for LGBT youth ages 13 to 21. LICC also offers extensive outreach to Long Island schools through its Building Healthy Lives Through Education program. Workshops are delivered to individual classrooms, not large assemblies, in order to maximize student and teacher interaction. Topics are age-appropriate

phone-line suicide prevention hotline. In the past 42 years, it has grown into a major crisis intervention center, operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. It is staffed around-the-clock by trained counselors, who help more than 11,000 cases annually. The center now features six telephone hotlines, live online chat, texting and walk-in counseling. The center offers translation services for Long Island’s increasingly diverse immigrant population, and serves as backup to the national suicide hotline 1-800-Suicide, Children of Hope, the Long Island Railroad (in response to the occurrence of suicides on railroad platforms) and numerous Long Island agencies.

Golf Classic Set John T. Mather Memorial Hospital’s 29th Annual Golf Classic will take place at the Port Jefferson Country Club at Harbor Hills on Monday, June 2nd with proceeds benefitting Nursing Education programs at the Hospital. The event has raised more than $1 million dollars for the Hospital over the years. This year’s John T. Mather Founder’s Award will be presented to International Recovery Associates (IRA) of Nesconset, a full service collection agency for both the commercial and medical industries. The award is given to a distinguished individual or organization with an exemplary record of leadership, dedication and excellence to the provision of health care in the community. IRA has since 1990 generously supported various hospital events including the Golf Classic, Fortunato Breast Health Center and One Enchanted Evening gala. Recognized for setting the bar in music education accessibility for students, Massapequa School District received its fifth designation as one of the nation’s Best Communities for Music Education by the National Association for Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation. The honor was awarded to 15 Nassau County school districts among 376 districts recognized nationwide. Dr. David Gaines, Massapequa’s curriculum associate for music, K-12, attributes the recognition to the collective support of the staff, administrators, parents and the school

board. “There is tremendous support and enthusiasm on all levels to see that our students have access to an enriching music program and that they receive the support and opportunities they need to be successful student musicians,” Dr. Gaines said. “This honor affirms that our music department, its staff and our programs are at the forefront of music education nationwide.” The fifth recognition trumpets some recent milestones and achievements in the district. Massapequa High School clarinetist Timothy

East Lake Elementary School and the Literacy Department welcomed author, illustrator and TV producer Dan Yaccarino, who is well known for his beloved children’s books, including Doug Unplugged and Every Friday.

Top Community participation, instructional time, facilities, support for the music program, and other relevant factors in their communities’ music education programs. The

responses were reviewed by advisory organizations and verified with district officials.

To prepare for his visit, the children completed various reading and literacy projects that were posted around the building. Yaccarino, who is also an animator for the TV series Oswald and Willa’s Wild Life, enthralled students

with his books and film trailers of his animated series. He also drew pictures of characters from his books and answered many questions from students.

Diovanni became the first Massapequa student to be named an All-National musician by National Association for Music Education’s (NAfME). The district was also one of only three in Nassau County that produced 10 or more All-State musicians. Selection for the “Best Communities in Music Education “ distinction is based on results of an online survey that measures the strength of curriculum and programs as well as the level of public support. STUDYING SPRING - Webelo Scouts of Massapequa Pack 696 journeyed up to Sand’s Point this week to take an early look at spring. The scouts had a guided tour of the grounds and Sand’s Point Nature Preserve which allowed them to look at tadpoles in various stages, identify the winter version of poison ivy, and study growth patterns of tree moss and fungi. The scouts were particularly interested in the man-made bat houses and rodent bones found in owl pellets.
