Who Are Your “Toilet Paper & Paper Towels?” As we still find ourselves enduring this pandemic, we are slowly yet surely seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. T h e r e is talk of re-opening businesses, heightened anxiety seems to be diminishing and the curve has begun to flatten. My thoughts and prayers remain with those in need, as well as those serving on the frontlines. We will continue to stand strong and one day this pandemic will fully be behind us.
If we change our thought process from items to people, which two people in your life do you rely on everyday? Who are your “toilet paper and paper towels?” Sometimes the people we love and rely on the most are the people we take most for granted.

This past week, our Publisher was able to purchase toilet paper and paper towels in bulk. He kindly left a large stash of these items in our office and let each employee know that they can take some home as needed. It was a selfless gesture and people appreciated it. However, when I got home I chuckled at the thought of it! Who would have thought that toilet paper and paper towels would ever be viewed as hot items and that employees would get excited over the distribution of paper products? Not me!

Pet owners can rest easy that there is no reason to believe that dogs or cats in the United States might be a source of infection for the new coronavirus disease — COVID-19 — or cause its spread according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. And so far, according to the CDC, there have been no reports of pets becoming sick with COVID-19. This coronavirus appears to be primarily transmitted from human to human. As a pet owner, you may have heard of canine coronavirus, an intestinal infection in dogs, especially puppies, and feline coronavirus, which can cause feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). These types of coronaviruses have been around for quite some time and are not associated with the current outbreak. To protect yourself, your family, and possibly even
your pets, from this new coronavirus, you should follow these precautions: • Frequently wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water (use hand sanitizer with more than 60 percent alcohol if you can’t wash) • Avoid close contact with people who are sick—stay at least three feet away • Cover your mouth/ nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, then throw away the used tissues and wash your hands • Stay at home if you are sick • Sanitize often-used surfaces in your home and office If you do become sick with COVID-19, how then should you care for your pet? The CDC recommends that you restrict contact with pets and other animals just as you would with people. Ask another member of your
household to care for your pets while you are sick. If you must do it yourself, wash your hands before and after you interact and wear a facemask. We are Girl Scout Cadette Troop 2524 from Massapequa and we are working on our Silver Award project. The Silver Award is the highest award a Girl Scout Cadette can receive and has given us an opportunity to show that we are leaders who are organized, determined, and dedicated to improving our community. Our project, “Apply Before You Fry,” was designed to educate the community about the harmful effects of the Sun and raise awareness about the importance of wearing Sun protection.

As part of our project, we surveyed the community to find out how much people knew about the harmful effects of the Sun and how to protect themselves. The results of that survey are in and, while we were pleased to find out that nearly everyone we surveyed wears sunscreen at some time during the year (97%), there are still many misconceptions about the Sun and Sun protection. We would like to share some important Sun safety information with you to help keep you safe in the Sun while you have fun.

FIND THE RIGHT SUNSCREEN

Many people think the Sun is the strongest between the hours of 12pm and 2pm, BUT the Sun is actually strongest from 10am-4pm.
•
Many people don’t reapply sunscreen, BUT sunscreen should be reapplied every 2 hours, and after sweating and going in the water.
•
Many people don’t think about applying sunscreen to their scalp, BUT your scalp is almost always exposed to the Sun… so, while you’re applying sunscreen to all the other exposed parts of your body, please remember to apply sunscreen to your scalp.
•
Many people think that only the Sun’s UVA rays are harmful, BUT the reality is that both UVA and UVB rays are harmful.
•
Many people believe that they won’t get a tan if they use sunscreen, BUT the truth is that you can still get tan if you wear sunscreen.
•
Most of those surveyed do not wear sunscreen all year long, BUT you should wear sunscreen all year, every season… even on cloudy and snowy days.
•
When choosing a sunscreen, you need to find one that has both an SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of at least 30 or more and is Broad-Spectrum, meaning it protects your skin from UVA and UVB rays, both of which are harmful.
•
When applying sunscreen, remember to apply it anywhere your body is exposed to Sun: Scalp, Face, Ears, Neck, Arms, Hands, Shoulders, Back, Stomach, Legs, and Feet.

The outbreak of the COVID-19 virus has proved extremely challenging for many businesses, with the restaurant and lodging sector of the economy hit particularly hard, as the world works together to employ social distancing in an effort to “flatten the curve” and stop the spread of the virus. Long Island Community Hospital has raised over $550,000 toward its $1,000,000 goal for the Knapp Family COVID-19 Health Crisis Challenge within ten days of announcing the campaign. The matching grant is made possible by the KnappSwezey Foundation, Island Outreach Foundation and Gardener Foundation to help raise vital funding for the community hospital in their fight against COVID-19. “The outpouring of support has been humbling, to say the least. In a short time our community has donated over $275,000, which has been generously matched by the Knapp family to reach over $550,000,” said Richard T. Love Of Language Pays Off Massapequa High School’s Class of 2020 will include the first graduates from the district to earn the Seal of Biliteracy, a designation for students who have attained proficiency in two or more languages. For students who wish to pursue the Seal of Biliteracy, they must meet stringent requirements in both their English language arts classes and their world language of choice, including languages beyond the six offered by the district. This year, 23 seniors are eligible for the award. New York is one of 43 states to offer the designation. Curriculum Associate for World Languages and ENL Bill Anderson said that in
late January, students made their panel presentations for the world language project of the Seal of Biliteracy. Each candidate had to make a cultural comparison and speak in the world language that he or she is studying in front of a panel of three or four educators from the district. Panel members included World Language teachers from Berner Middle School and Massapequa High School’s main and Ames campuses, Superintendent Lucille Iconis, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Dr. Thomas Fasano, Administrative Associate Lisa Silveri, Curriculum Associate for English Language Arts Tina Farrell and Mr. Anderson.
Victoria Marsico, who is studying Mandarin Chinese, presented the differences between traditional American and Chinese wedding ceremonies. Alex Lawless researched the political protests in France and their effect on other political systems in the world, while Charles Livingston studied the differences among Chinese cuisines in different regions of China. For the English requirement, students must maintain a 95 grade point average or higher during their junior and senior years and score a 90 or higher on the English Regents exam. A culminating project is also required in these courses. “It expands their repertoire of skills,” Ms. Farrell said of the Seal of Biliteracy. “When you think about being able to be fluent in another language besides being proficient in English, it can open up the doors to possible career opportunities for students.” She added that being bilingual can be an advantage for them in applying for a job and will also help if they choose to study abroad in college. Alex, president of the French Club and a member of the French Honor Society, said that having the
ability to speak to people in other countries on a deeper level is why he has studied the language so intensively over the past six years. Kayla Mushorn said that she wanted to pursue the Seal of Biliteracy because she knows how hard she’s worked learning Spanish since seventh grade, and earning it would be a big accomplishment and a reflection of her success. Elizabeth Toma plans to double major in psychology and Spanish in college and said the ability to speak two languages could help her in a future career. “I’ve always loved Spanish, the language and the culture,” she said. Kelly Meyer has studied American Sign Language since ninth grade and said she has really enjoyed the
experience, particularly interacting with members of the deaf community. She is a member of the ASL Club and ASL Honor Society and has been on numerous field trips to schools for deaf students. Charles, the president of the Chinese Club, said that pursuing proficiency in Mandarin Chinese was a way to challenge himself and learn one of the most commonly spoken languages in the world. The Seal of Biliteracy, he added, shows a commitment to learning the language. “The students have worked really hard to earn the Seal of Biliteracy,” Mr. Anderson said. “This is beyond the scope of what their classwork is in their world language classes.”

Guardians Of Rescue Is Struggling To Help The Animals Most of us are aware of the toll that the pandemic is having on humans around the country, and even around the world. Yet the economic impacts are being felt beyond humans. The animals are being impacted in numerous ways through this situation, leaving some animal rescue organizations to struggle in being able to provide their services. Guardians of Rescue has had an increase in dogs to care for, while their financial stability to do so declines. Guardians of Rescue is overwhelmed with the hardest hit people who can’t feed their pets and taking in abandoned animals left to fend for themselves which has become a big problem. Now, they are now turning to the people and asking that their organization be rescued amid the pandemic. “We have been providing our rescue services for over 10 years, but now we are struggling to keep our organization going,” explains Robert Misseri, president of Guardians of Rescue, an animal rescue organization. “We are in jeopardy because of the perfect storm that this pandemic has created for organizations such as ours. Many people are living paycheck to paycheck so pets are in trouble.” The pandemic has impacted Guardians of Rescue and other animal shelters in a variety of ways, including: Due to so many people having their employment impacted by the virus, donations to the organization are down. This makes it difficult for them
to continue feeding the animals, building doghouses, taking in new rescues, and trying to cover all their expenses. Some rescue organizations are seeing adoptions and fosters up but this is because people are homebound right now. This leaves the shelters worried about what will happen to the animals when people go back to work. There are some people who fear for their own well-being and financial stability, which motivates them to drop their pets off at the rescue shelter. They feel they can’t adequately take care of their pets during this time, so they surrender them, putting more strain on shelters. Many shelters have to cancel fundraising events that usually bring in a lot of money to fund their programs. Additionally, some shelters offer spring break camps as a fundraising tool, and those had to be canceled due to the pandemic. Many rescue organizations and shelters are trying to help people care for their pets by providing them with food. This helps to keep the person from surrendering the animals to the shelter or rescue organization. Food donations to many shelters are down, simply because people are focused on their own families and are staying home. This leaves shelters scrambling to try to come up with enough money and food to continue feeding all of the animals, as well as providing them with any medical care they may need. “The pandemic has
created a host of problem for the animals,” says Misseri. “I hope that we can make it through this difficult time, so that we can continue to help the animals in need. Our programs have helped countless animals including military members. uch like St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated by people with no trace of Irish heritage, Cinco de Mayo has become a day of celebration for people who do not trace their ancestry to Mexico. In fact, History.com notes that Cinco de Mayo is a relatively minor holiday in Mexico, where the day commemorates a symbolic yet not significantly strategic win by a heavily outnumbered Mexican army over French forces sent by Napoleon III to establish an empire on Mexican land. In the United States, Cinco de Mayo has become a day to commemorate Mexican culture, including its much-loved cuisine.
Food is front and center at many Cinco de Mayo celebrations. Those who simply want to enjoy some homemade Mexican fare this Cinco de Mayo can try their hands at this recipe for “Fiery Corn Salsa” from Kelley Cleary Coffeen’s “200 Easy Mexican Recipes” (Robert Rose).
FIERY CORN SALSA Makes 2 cups 1⁄4 3

tablespoons freshly squeezed lime juice

inco de Mayo celebrates the 1862 defeat of the French by the Mexican army at the Battle of Puebla. That battle occurred during the Franco-Mexican War, which was an invasion of Mexico launched by the French in 1861. The French invaded Mexico as a result of newly elected Mexican President Benito Juarez's decision to suspend interest payments on loans the country took out from foreign countries. France was one such creditor, but the French were not the only country to send troops to Mexico in response to Juarez's decision. Spain and Great Britain also sent troops to Veracruz, but both countries entered negotiations with Mexico and ultimately
withdrew their forces. However, France, under the leadership of Napoleon III, wanted to ensure access to Latin American markets. The French naval fleet's arrival in Veracruz forced President Juarez and his government to retreat. Months later, Juarez's force of 2,000 squared off against 6,000 French troops at the Battle of Puebla. Despite being heavily outnumbered, the Mexican forces claimed victory, losing fewer than 100 men while French casualties numbered nearly 500. While the victory itself did not prove a major win in the war against the French, it symbolized the strength of the Mexican people and served to strengthen the resistance movement. Cinco de Mayo is a minor holiday in Mexico, but has grown into a popular celebration of Mexican culture in the United States.

The highly unusual circumstances of the COVID-19 outbreak, and subsequent shutting down of much of society, has helped to identify the things that really matter in our lives. The unique circumstances have tested our abilities to leverage the wealth of technologies that Catholic Elementary Schools have invested in, and tested the partnership between parents and educators. The families and students in our school communities have found comfort from the close relationship each has with their faith, and with each other, in the uncertainty introduced by the global pandemic. Academically, each student in a Catholic school was already a user of the Google apps for education (the Google G-Suite) and each student has a Google account that they can access from any
device, anywhere they can access the Internet. In the days leading up to the closing of the schools, the schools made sure that every student had access to a suitable device to continue their learning remotely, and loaned devices to students who needed them. Faculty responded quickly, with teachers ‘translating’ lesson plans to make them engaging and effective when presented online. Pastors and Principals orchestrated the activities and began each new day with morning announcements, a morning prayer, and the pledge of allegiance. School days continued, uninterrupted, right down to the acknowledgement of students celebrating birthdays. The tight communities around our schools worked together to maintain a sense of normalcy for the students.
