ne of the first steps is to apply a pre-emergent weed killer to get a head start in knocking out weeds that can plague the lawn during the growing season. Killing weeds at the roots early on can mean far fewer hassles in spring and summer, and may prevent new generations of weeds from cropping up each year. While it may be tempting to take a prematurely warm day as a sign that spring is in full force and purchase a bunch of annuals, it’s better to know the last of the possible frost dates (check “The Farmer’s Almanac”). Otherwise, you may waste your time and money planting
flowers or vegetables only to have them zapped away by another cold day. Amend the soil so that it is the right consistency — just crumbling when lifting it. Soil that is too muddy after a spring thaw can harden, making it difficult for plants to flourish later on in the season. Speak with representatives at a local lawn and garden center about which types of amendments you can add to your soil in your particular area, in order to enrich your soil. Lawn and garden experts at The Home Depot suggest filling in bare patches of lawn now by mixing a few shovelfuls of soil with grass seed. Then apply this patch to the bare areas, water it, and continue to care for the entire area until the spot fills in.

Spend a day in the garage or shed tending to the lawn mower and other gardening equipment. Clean all of your tools and ensure that everything works, repairing parts as needed. Give outdoor entertaining spaces a good scrubbing, clearing away dirt and grime that may have accumulated over winter months. Use a leaf blower to blow away any leftover leaves.
Check if your front porch, railings or decking need painting and/or staining. Tackle these projects when the weather is cooler so everything will be ready for those peak spring days. Think about any annuals you might want to plant in the landscape this year that
will complement your existing shrubbery or perennials. Come up with a theme so that the entire yard is cohesive. Before homeowners know it, it is time to once again enjoy long days spent outdoors. Get a jump start on spring lawn prep as soon as you can.

Looking for a way to combine your experience & work outdoors? Full & part-time career opportunities for those with experience in:
Hope for Youth www.hfyny.org Hope for Youth is an Amityville-based, notfor-profit organization that works to facilitate positive change in the lives of Long Island children, youth and families.
Nationwide, 45 percent of foster children reside in a foster family home with a nonrelative, while 34 percent are with a foster family home with a relative. For 54 percent of foster children, the goal is to reunite the child with a parent or primary caretaker. The goal is adoption for 28 percent. On Long Island, Hope For Youth is a central player in the identification and training of foster families. All Hope For Youth foster families receive multiple certifications in parenting skills. Foster parents take part in mandated educational workshops throughout the course of the year.
The team members at Hope For Youth are keenly aware of the unique role that kinship caregivers play in working to achieve reunification for children and youth in foster care. This focus helps to keep moving the system toward one that truly supports families. The organization also participates in “Wendy’s Wonderful Kids,” part of the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption. Under this program, Hope For Youth has two adoption recruiters who bring children waiting to be adopted from foster care closer to safe, loving and permanent homes. The Foundation’s adoption recruitment model has proven effective nationwide in serving children who’ve been in foster care the longest. Hope For Youth is always looking for new foster parents. They also welcome volunteer and charitable donations to help advance its foster care work, and to advance all of its programming in support of children Island-wide who deserve more stable and fulfilling lives. Long Island’s Largest Car Show On April 30th At Tobay Beach Hundreds of Vehicles to Participate, Trophy Presentation, Free Concert & Free Admission Long Island’s premier car show experience will take place on Saturday, April 30, 2022 from 11am to 4pm at TOBAY Beach (rain date May 1st). The Supervisor’s TOBAY Beach Classic will be co-sponsored by Car Show Long Island and will feature hundreds of automobiles, trucks,
military vehicles, and emergency service vehicles. A live concert performed by That 70’s Band will take place during the day, followed by trophy presentations. The event is free for spectators. Supervisor Saladino stated, “Whether you’re a proud classic car owner or you want to see the
best cars in the region, Car Show Long Island is the place to be! This free family-fun event is a perfect way to spend the day, all with the beautiful backdrop of TOBAY Beach. Spectators can check out cool cars, vendors, exhibits and enjoy live music while surrounded by Long Island’s best
classic, muscle, antique and exotic cars.” Trophies will be awarded in each class, and children will have a say when deeming which rides are their favorites in the SUNation Kids’ Choice Award. Car Show Long Island’s 2022 TOBAY BEACH Spring Classic is made possible through
the following presenting sponsors: Bethpage Federal Credit Union, NAO Medical, MSG Networks, SUNation and Ambassador Home Improvement. Classic Car enthusiasts and spectators can also grab a bite to eat from the food truck corral, and can also check out numerous vendors and

Fire Districts Ship 4,000lbs Of Medical Supplies To Ukraine Frontlines & Refugees Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino joined with Receiver of Taxes Jeff Pravato and members of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America Long Island Chapter to recognize the Association of Fire Districts of Nassau County as they prepared to ship 4,000lbs of medical supplies to the frontlines in Ukraine. The 20ft shipping container full of necessary supplies is being transported by the Terry Farrell Foundation to a local port, and will reach the people of Ukraine through the Association’s partnership with St. Vladimir’s Parish Center in Uniondale. Supervisor Saladino
stated, “The volunteer fire service is dedicated to protecting people’s lives and property, and their sense of service is what made our volunteers step up to assist Ukrainians fighting to protect their homeland. I thank our firefighters and EMS workers for their service to our nation, and to the cause of freedom around the globe.” In mid-March, the Town initiated its own collection drive which resulted in 7,000lbs – the largest collection on Long Island – of supplies being successfully collected and shipped to Ukraine to be distributed to those in need. Ralph Raymond,
North Massapequa Fire Commissioner and President of the Association of Fire Districts of Nassau County, said, “Every day we see the horrific situation in Ukraine getting worse and worse. But the outpouring of support and overwhelming generosity of our firefighters in Nassau County has only grown stronger.
