This year’s celebrity guest is Chip Wade from HGTV and the Ellen Show Contractor Challenge. The Week That Was By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Let’s try something different for a change. Instead of waiting until the eleventh hour to compose my thoughts for the week, I’ve decided to jot down a bit each day, with hopes that these random ramblings will gel into a somewhat coherent theme. Sounds just abstract enough to work. Monday… The weekly “fresh start” we all seek, yet are often disappointed by about 10 minutes into. For me, the perfect opportunity to catch up on the avalanche of e-mails that have surely accumulated over the weekend, while methodically trying to plan the remainder of the week’s activities. A quick scan of social media says everyone is still buzzing about last night’s

highly anticipated season premiere of Game of Thrones. Me, I’m still working my way through the series of five larger-than-life books. Tuesday… Into the fray again, trying to keep pace with the workflow in preparation for my day off on Friday, yet another reason to get a jump on that column. Nothing but rain and clouds outside, which makes for a decidedly dreary disposition. But, I suppose such an atmosphere is far more conducive to accomplishing tasks on the endless To Do list. Better not to be tempted by the sun’s rays, beckoning you to take an extended lunch. Wednesday… Yet another lovely day in the neighborhood, or so I briefly glimpsed on my way into the office. Word is it’s 66º and sunny. One of these days, this

kind of weather will coincide with a weekend. Maybe. But alas, here I sit at my keyboard, typing away at the local community news and events. Summer fun in the sun can’t come soon enough. Thursday… The eleventh hour. One day short of a deadline; for me, tomorrow will be spent helping to run the Society of Professional Journalists’ Annual Region I Conference, this year hosted by Hofstra University and sponsored by our very own Press Club of Long Island. A full schedule of panels and lectures by some of the region’s finest journalists is on tap, a muchneeded reminder of why it was I became involved in this field to begin with. And so, I’m off. Stay tuned for a full recap of the conference next week!

On Saturday, April 25th, the Town of Oyster Bay, the North Oyster Bay Baymen’s Association (NOBBA) and Friends of the Bay will, once again, join forces to sponsor the annual Oyster Bay Harbor Fall Cleanup Day, according to Town Councilman Anthony Macagnone. For over twenty years, Town employees and volunteers have rolled up their sleeves and completed a thorough cleanup of beaches and shoreline areas along Oyster Bay harbor. All day, people walk along the shoreline collecting debris, picking up trash, and even working from boats, cleaning up trash and discarded boats. This annual Cleanup Day is an inspiration to residents, to help preserve the precious ecology of one of the Town’s crown jewels, Oyster Bay Harbor. Volunteers are being sought to participate in the cleanup, which

will run from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Individuals and groups who are interested can get further information by calling the Town’s Department of Environmental Resources at 516.677.5853. Volunteers are also welcome to sign up the day of the event. The central meeting place will be Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park launching ramps, Larrabee Avenue, Oyster Bay. By the end of each year, tons of paper, food, plastics and other trash are left on beaches or dumped overboard from recreational and commercial vessels. Contrary to what people may believe, debris does not immediately disintegrate, but actually takes weeks, months or even years. The longer this litter remains on our shorelines, the greater the damage will be to the environment.

If you swim, boat or fish in Oyster Bay Harbor, or just want to help protect and enhance the beauty and environmental integrity of this beautiful waterway, please join on April 25th. If you can’t

stay for the entire day, even a couple of hours will make a difference. Cleanup events like this will help to preserve the environment for your enjoyment and the enjoyment of generations to come.

He also celebrated the illustrations, focusing on the process and drawing parallels between the work of the author and the illustrator. Throughout his presentation, he incorporated his skills as a teacher in order to make a variety of real worldclassroom connections. Bildner, who grew up in Jericho, experienced careers in teaching and law before becoming a

writer. After earning a political science degree from John Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, he continued his education at New York University School of Law and began practicing law at a Manhattan law firm. After one year, he realized he loved teaching and working with kids, so he went back to school and earned a degree in early childhood and elementary education and taught for 11 years before writing full time in 2006.

Young women from the Massapequa School District who excel in math and science broadened their knowledge of engineering and computer science by participating in the second annual “Introduce a Girl to Engineering” event at New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) Old Westbury Campus. Hosted during National Engineers Week, the event aims to increase awareness and interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) fields in middle and high school young women by showcasing the successes and accomplishments of NYIT students, faculty, and alumni from its School of Engineering and Computing Sciences (SoECS). The ultimate goal is to encourage

young women to consider careers in engineering and computer science. Keynote speaker Barbara Porter, an NYIT alumna and chief technology officer at FragranceNet. com, encouraged students to take advantage of the many opportunities available in the fields of engineering and computer science. Hands-on interactive demonstrations led by NYIT’s engineering students had attendees flying drones, operating Nao humanoid robots, coding, and making ice smoothies via a humanoperated bike blender. Massapequa High School senior Shannon D’Andrea said, “It was very inspiring to hear how Ms. Porter started her career in computer science and how she rose to her current

position.” Classmate Christina DeLuca said she was “thrilled” to meet with members of the NYIT VEX robotics team and discuss ideas that she could bring back to her VEX robotics team at Massapequa High School. Freshman students from the Massapequa High School-Ames Campus were equally enthralled with the event. “This experience really opened my eyes to just how much there is to the world of engineering and it really helped me consider doing something in this field,” Krystal Wheaton said. “I got a clearer picture of what my future could be,” said classmate Ella Schnee. Marveled by the bike blender demonstration, she added, “I’m going to build that bicycle at home.”

Born in Cesena, Italy, Mary came to the United States with her parents as an infant. She lived in the Bronx and is the oldest of six siblings. From an early age, Mary had an affinity for learning. While helping care for her five brothers, she excelled in school and earned a master’s degree in English from New York University. She taught sixth grade and went on to be an administrator in the Freeport School District, until retiring in 1983. Mary credits her

longevity to her strong family ties and religious faith. Although she never married, she enjoyed a large circle of friends and family and an adventurous life. She enjoyed traveling, visiting Italy, Mexico, Newfoundland and various locations across the United States. She happily enjoys socializing with her church friends. She also spends a lot of time with her more than 40 nieces and nephews. “My heart beats with warmth when I see my nieces and nephews and their children,” said Mary. “Their many accomplishments are an extension of my life and are what keeps me going.

On April 13th, Mary Magnani celebrated her 100th birthday at Captain Bill’s Restaurant in Bay Shore. She was honored along with 200 fellow volunteers at Good Samaritan Hospital’s Annual Volunteer Recognition Luncheon. Special recognitions were given by United States Senator Charles Schumer, New York State Senator Phil Boyle and Town of Islip Town Councilman Steve Flotteran. Mary is a Charter Member of the Good Samaritan Hospital’s Copiague/ Massapequa Guild.
