Savvy drivers recognize that maintenance is essential to keeping their vehicles running strong for years on end. Such maintenance ensures vehicles are safe to take out on the road, and basic upkeep also protects drivers’ financial investments in their cars and trucks. Drivers who are not mechanically inclined tend to put their vehicles in the hands of a trusted mechanic to perform routine maintenance like oil changes, but there’s a host of simpler vehicle maintenance tasks that drivers don’t want to overlook, some of which can be performed without visiting the auto body shop. • Brake inspections: Brake inspections are best left to the professionals, who can check the thickness of brake pads and look for other indicators of excessive wear. The automotive resource Cars. com recommends having brakes inspected during

routine tire rotations, which many automotive professionals suggest should be done every six months. • Car wash: Car washes might not be the first task drivers associate with vehicle maintenance, but they can prevent longterm damage to cars and trucks. Damage from bird droppings and road salt and ice melt products in the winter can damage a vehicle’s paint job and its undercarriage. Wash the car on your own at home or visit a professional car wash to perform this simple yet vital maintenance at regular intervals and whenever you notice significant buildup of dirt and grime on the car’s exterior. • Air filter: The air filter on a car or truck prevents debris, dirt and other contaminants from getting into the engine. The auto insurance experts at Allstate® advise drivers to inspect their vehicle air filters once a year. Air filters

in need of replacement may appear dirty, and reduced fuel economy, unusual engine sounds and reduced horsepower are some other potential indicators that an air filters needs to be replaced. • Windshield wipers: Windshield wiper blades are easily overlooked, but various automotive experts recommend replacing wiper blades every six to 12 months. Old wiper blades won’t perform at peak capacity, dramatically reducing visibility during heavy rain and snowstorms. Anyone can replace their own windshield wiper blades in a matter of minutes, and new blades won’t break the bank. Vehicle maintenance is not exclusive to tending to what’s under the hood. Keeping a car running smoothly for years involves routine tasks that many drivers can perform without professional assistance.

Contractors For Kids (CFK) is a non-profit organization, which was founded for the purpose of providing assistance to families in Long Island communities. Their goal is to assist children and their families overcome obstacles that have unfortunately changed or have impacted their lives through the sickness, injury or death of a child. They are committed to this cause and want to give hope and reassurance for the futures of Long Islanders. CFK was founded in 2005 by Kevin Harney and Alan Nahmias of Stalco Construction. Kevin and Alan, both long-time philanthropists, saw the growing need for financial assistance in our communities and knew that something more needed to be done. Through random acts of kindness, they were slowly changing the lives of others, however they thirsted to make more change so they decided to form this non-profit, Contractors For Kids. Their organization runs on donations only and is volunteer based, they have no employees. One family at a time, they make sure that the financial hardship brought on by sickness, injury or death does not destroy an already hurting family. pandemic took its toll on CFK, as it did on many, but they stayed afloat and are thankful for the opportunity to continue to make a difference. Recently, CFK helped a 12 year old boy who suffered from a traumatic brain injury. He is now blind and he has a history of Wilm’s tumor and craniotomy, among many other complications. This little boy was put into the foster system and was adopted by the nurse that fostered him. CFK was able to provide them with a special chair to hold him, car payments and rent! Additionally, they assisted a 6 year old girl with Fibromatosis soft tissue sarcoma who lives in Holbrook. Due to intensive Chemo treatments, her mom had to stay home with her. CFK helped with several month’s mortgage payments, water and electric bills, as well as car payments to help keep this family afloat during difficult times! So how do you qualify to get help? It’s quite simple. If you can prove that you are struggling financially because of the sickness, injury or death of a child, you live on Long Island (in Nassau or Suffolk County), and you have filled out their Application For Assistance, they will get in touch with you to see how they can be of help! Want to help make a difference? You can do so by learning their mission, spreading awareness, referring families to CFK, distributing handouts/electronic materials and representing CFK at health fairs, open enrollment or employee meetings. SPECIAL AUTOMOBILE ISSUE How To Get A Wi-Fi Enabled Car Staying connected is more important than ever, whether you’re at home or on the go. Connecting to Wi-Fi is typically easy at home, but what about when you’re in the car? Wi-Fi-enabled vehicles are becoming hot commodities for drivers. There are various ways to access the internet in a car. Drivers can buy an add-on device. Even mobile gadgets that aren’t specifically designed for vehicle applications can be easily connected. The devices plug into the 12-volt accessory outlet. OBD II devices connect to a car’s OBD II port. This is most often located below the steering wheel. Mechanics use this port to run digital vehicle diagnostics. However, it also can be used to create a Wi-Fi hot spot with an OBD device. Another option is to use a smartphone to create a mobile hotspot through a cellular data plan. Anyone in the car can then tether their phones or other devices to the smartphone to access the internet. Many vehicles are now equipped with their own

Wi-Fi capabilities. This means you will not need an extra device to access the internet. However, you will probably need to sign up for an additional data plan through whatever service the car manufacturer uses to offer Wi-Fi capability or through your mobile phone carrier. AllConnect. com says Wi-Fi plans for vehicles start as low as $10 per month and may include unlimited data. Furthermore, car Wi-Fi is often different from a mobile hotspot because it is likely to offer better connection and more security while preserving mobile

data and phone battery life. Cars that are not equipped with Wi-Fi can have it as an add-on with an installed wireless vehicle router. These routers range from $200 to $600 and are professionally installed. Having Wi-Fi in a vehicle is handy when taking road trips or when work requires internet connectivity. Dedicated vehicle internet can help save on mobile phone data plans and battery life. Plus, people increasingly staying at home can rely on a vehicle’s Wi-Fi system as a back-up should their home internet go down.

The Benefits Of Wearing Seat Belts The importance of wearing seat belts in vehicles has resonated with drivers and passengers across the globe. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the national seat belt use rate in passenger vehicles in 2019 was 90.7 percent. And despite their simplicity, particularly when compared to

the various other technologies available in modern vehicles, seat belts remain an incredibly effective device against injury and even death, though only when drivers and their passengers remember to engage them. For example, the NHTSA notes that seat belts saved an estimated 14,955 lives in 2017 alone. Unfortunately,

the NHTSA also reports that 47 percent of the 37,133 people killed in motor vehicle crashes in 2017 were not wearing seat belts. Studies have indicated that front seat riders in cars who wear their seat belts can reduce their risk of fatal injury by 45 percent, while front seat riders in trucks can reduce their risk for fatal injury by 60 percent.

We held our April Board Meeting recently, and the report from the Nominating Committee was made by Carol Leff. We will have our elections in May at the General Meeting. This company assists businesses with a certain threshold of revenue look at their costs and help them save money where applicable. The Chamber will also benefit, as Gary Levy (our member and President of Biltmore Savings Consultants) will rebate to the Chamber when a business uses this concept. My final piece of this message is dedicated to two great Board Members. Past President Robert R. Barrett has had the honor of being President twice, and he led the Chamber with skill and determination. Robert is a retired NYPD Police Officer and a current Realtor with Nappa Realty. He is well-known within the Massapequa community for being active in the Kiwanis as well. I value his advice and direct approach, and thoroughly enjoy his writings with his million-dollar words. The other Board Member is Past President Patty Orzano. I will give her the name “Madame Chamber,” as she is involved in so much with our programs, and she does a great job with her dedication and determination for the Chamber in these sometimes trying times. The challenge encourages participants to look beyond short term issues and look at the ways water use affects the future of our communities — from how we manage our coasts, lakes, and rivers to reducing polluted runoff. “The Town of Oyster Bay is blessed with beautiful shorelines on its north and south shores, and our Town Board has continuously demonstrated our commitment to protecting our environment, our

water quality and our shorelines,” said Supervisor Saladino. “We understand the importance of water conservation on every level and have taken many steps to protect our water supply. From creating a shellfish management program which helps keep our harbor clean to leading the initiative for the remediation of the Grumman Navy Plume, we’ve consistently shown that we are committed to the preservation of our

most precious resource.” Councilman Hand added, “Water conservation is something we can easily achieve each and every day. From watching sprinkler usage, repairing leading faucets and pipes, using reusable shopping bags and water bottles, to recycling plastics, metals and cardboard, we can truly make a difference. It doesn’t take much, and every drop counts!” To participate in the challenge and qualify for

prizes, residents can visit www.mywaterpledge.com and make their online pledge to conserve water in the Town of Oyster Bay. Municipalities with the highest percentage of residents who participate receive a chance to win money toward their home utility bills and many more eco-friendly prizes. Locations are categorized by population. Students and teachers are also invited to participate.

There was a bug invasion in a fourth grade classroom at East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, but the paper critters were a little hard to spot as it was part of a lesson on camouflage. During a science lesson in Theresa LiCausi’s class, students learned how animals hide, and they focused on the ways bugs

are able to blend in with their surroundings. Each student was tasked with making a paper insect and giving it a design so it could blend into a surface in the classroom. Before school one day, Ms. LiCausi hid their creatures around the room and when students arrived, they went on a bug hunt, trying to find as many as they could.

The bugs were “hidden in plain sight,” Ms. LiCausi said, but many were hard to find because the students did such a good job camouflaging them. She awarded a prize to the student who found the most bugs, and the student whose bug couldn’t be found at all.

People know to protect their skin and eyes from the sun. Sun exposure can be dangerous for the body, but the sun’s rays also can damage automobiles. Leaving a vehicle exposed to sunlight for extended periods of time increases the risk of damage to its interior and exterior. It’s important that car and truck owners recognize this so they can mitigate the potential problems sun and heat may cause. Testing conducted at the State Farm® Vehicle Research Facility found interior vehicle air temperatures have been recorded well in excess of 145 F. Interior surfaces exposed to direct sunlight have been recorded at temperatures in excess of 195 F.

The automotive repair service Fix Auto says the sun’s ultraviolet rays can cause the vehicle’s paint to peel and fade over time. UV rays break down the molecules in the paint and make it appear dull. The company says red paint is particularly susceptible because red paint molecules deteriorate faster in the sun than other paint colors. To prevent potential sun-related damage, take these precautions. • Avoid direct sunlight. Park in the shade as much as possible. • Crack a window. If it is safe to do so, lower interior air temperature and equalize air pressure by opening up car windows a little. • Use a windshield

protector. Reflect sunlight away and keep the vehicle cool with a windshield sun protector that unfolds and slides into place. • Use a protectant wax. A layer of wax can

offer another layer of protection against the sun’s ultraviolet rays. • Wash the car frequently. Washing and hand-drying the vehicle helps to remove dirt and

other debris which can cause micro-scratches in the paint. • Install seat covers. Seat covers can protect leather and fabric upholstery. A leather

conditioner can help prevent cracks and tears from sunlight and heat. These steps are simple preventative measures that protect vehicles against sun damage.
