“All About” books. They could pick any topic, which included gymnastics, koalas, lacrosse, swimming and whale sharks, and had to do research. The children gathered information by reading books, finding online resources and interviewing people with knowledge of their subjects. To conclude the unit, students from the two
classes met in the allpurpose room on March 22 to share their books. As they paired off, children took turns reading to each other. Everyone left feeling like an accomplished author as their classmates, teaches and even Principal Stephen Aspetti left positive feedback on their compliment pages.

Did You Know? Longevity in marriage is something to be celebrated. Couples who reach fiftieth and sixtieth wedding anniversaries often commemorate those anniversaries with big parties. But there are some around the world who would consider golden anniversary celebrants to still be newlyweds. In December 2015, Karam Chand, 110, and his wife, Kartari Chand, 103, from Bradford, West Yorkshire (originally from India), celebrated their 90th wedding anniversary, becoming the world’s longest-betrothed couple. In America, John and Ann Betar, ages 104 and 100, respectively, have been married 83 years as of 2016. The couple eloped in 1932. They have been named one of America’s longest-married couples by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter.

Gazpacho A Healthy Favorite
This gluten-free, dairy-free, nut-free, soy-free and vegan Gazpacho recipe was submitted by Registered Dietician Nutritionist, Lee Cotton, RDN (www. leecottonrdn.com). Lee lives and practices nutritional counseling in Florida, but reads our newspaper online at www.SouthBaysNeighbor.com. For people with dietary restrictions, eliminating certain foods doesn't have to deprive you of flavor, as this recipe for Gazpacho proves! What You Will Need 10 ripe tomatoes, chopped 3 English cucumbers, diced 1 large red onion, diced 1 yellow pepper, seeded and chopped 3 red peppers, seeded and chopped 4 tbs red wine vinegar 2 tbs of olive oil 1 clove garlic, minced ½ cup cilantro chopped 2 limes sliced 1 avocado diced
Salt and Pepper to taste Preparation 1.Place tomatoes, onion, bell peppers, Tabasco sauce and garlic in a food processor and process until smooth. 2. Place all of the cucumbers except ½ cup cucumbers into the blender and process until smooth. 3. Add vinegar and oil and quick process until mixed. 4. Place the mixture in a serving bowl, and stir thoroughly. 5. Cover and refrigerate for an hour or until serving time. 6. Remove from refrigerator and uncover. 7. Add salt and pepper to taste. 8. Place gazpacho into serving dishes. 9. Garnish with remaining cucumbers and cilantro and a piece of lime and 1 t. of avocado. Enjoy! Recognizing Your Life Cycles You may think you know where you will be one year from today. Think again. Wherever you are right now; the people who are around you, the places you frequent, your relationship status, financial status, health status... even the area in which you reside are all outward projections of your inner world and your current stage of development. In the blink of an eye you could find yourself doing a slow circle turnabout as you wonder, “Whoa! How did I get here? My world has done a sudden 180.” It’s as if you have taken a quantum leap, but that leap has actually been a long time in the making. It is a result of your personal life cycles. I know what you are thinking. “That’s an interesting thought, but a year from now my life will most likely be pretty much the same.” That could be, but let me ask you this... Think about the year you met your spouse, the year you unexpectedly changed career paths or fate might have brought you to a new city (maybe fate brought you to Long Island, NY from someplace else), the
year you found out you were going to be a parent for the first time. I could list a hundred more examples. Who knew as the clock struck 12 midnight on New Year’s Day of that year, that those life changing events would be coming your way. Life holds so many mysteries for us to unfold; sometimes pleasant and sometimes not so pleasant. What I have come to know is that no matter what you are going through, there are always goodies waiting around a new corner. I can honestly say, I have never gone through a personal trial without something magical coming out of it; a special person, a new opportunity, an important revelation. I have also come to know that life looks most messy before things fall into place. At that point, all you can say is, “Wow!,” and “Thank you.” We go through cycles of rest, growth and then reaping rewards. We know we are in a cycle of rest when life seems status quo, the needle doesn’t move very much and we are just going about our business with no significant
ripples. Life seems fairly effortless and predictable in this cycle. It may even seem a bit boring at times, and you long for a little spice. We know we are in a growth cycle when hard times come, life feels chaotic and overwhelming, we “just can’t seem to catch a break,” and we experience heavy and painful emotions. It is in our growth cycles where we do the most significant work and our soul achieves further expansion. This expansion prepares us for our next reward cycle. When we pass the tests we are given during our growth cycles, we will then (often, when we least expect it) come into a new reward cycle. A reward cycle is recognizable to us because this is when we experience the goodies of life. Someone special comes into our path, doors seem to open up, a dream comes true, and life starts to feel great again. Suddenly, perspective is achieved. Any discomfort seems worth it, because it delivered us to a place of being able to receive the gift(s) we are now being given.

Long Island Senate Majority delegation announced the ‘MTA RAIL Act’ at the Hicksville LIRR station. The MTA RAIL Act will overhaul the MTA, its operations, and introduce much needed reforms to the way the MTA operates. They announced a five-point platform that includes an independent, forensic audit of the MTA, giving riders a voting voice on the MTA Board. The five-point platform includes: an independent, comprehensive forensic audit of the MTA’s procurements, improvement to longterm capital planning, providing riders a voting voice on the MTA board, overhauling the way the MTA analyzes itself, and ensuring MTA revenues are more likely to go to New York businesses. Student-Led STEAM Fourth-graders regularly participate in STEAM challenges in Meredith Marin’s class at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. The activities focus on science, technology, engineering, the arts and math. In March, Ms. Marin added a new twist. She asked students to come up with their own STEAM challenges. Each child had to create a concept, determine a materials
list and a time limit for building, and define the criteria for success. On March 22, the class participated in its first student-designed challenge. The class split into four groups, and each team had to build an octopus that could float in water. Materials included toothpicks, straws, Popsicle sticks, tin foil and brass fasteners. The groups earned more points the longer their octopi floated. Ms. Marin said
that upcoming challenges include building a wigwam, which connects to the fourth-grade social studies curriculum, and making a miniature basketball hoop and shooting a ball into it, as many students are passionate about sports. She said that the purpose of having students create activities was to get them to think outside of the box, and was very impressed with their imaginative ideas.

April’s Charity of the Month is: Operation S.P.L.A.S.H.
In honor of Earth Day, an annual event celebrated on April 22nd, which brings awareness about environmental conservation, I chose an eco-friendly non-profit on Long Island that strives to help conserve our island.

Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is a non-profit volunteer ran organization that is committed to improving the quality of life on Long Island Shores. Their mission is to provide a low cost solution to the growing problem of waterfront pollution through public awareness, community action and your participation. S.P.L.A.S.H. stands for Stop Polluting, Littering and Save Harbors.
Products used to wash boat hull sand decks often contain toxic ingredients such as chlorine, phosphates and ammonia. Degreasers dry the natural oils fish need for their gills to take in oxygen. For boats that are in the water, use cleaning methods that prevent or contain the release of pollutants to surface waters. Below are a few actions you can take: 1) When possible, remove the boat from the water and perform cleaning where debris can be captured and properly disposed. 2) Use fresh water to clean your boat after every use. 3) Use environmentally friendly cleaning methods and products. Here are a list of a few alternatives to toxic products: Elbow Grease, Hydogen Peroxide, Baking Soda, Salt, Apple Cider Vinegar, Baby Oil.

This organization holds Beach, Bay and Waterway Clean-Ups and operates several other projects such as Street Storm Drains, Ocean-Bay Water Exchange, No Wake Zones, Clean Marina Program, Youth Education Programs and more. They have successfully rescued 2,498,267 pounds of trash from our waters! Also, asside from collecting trash they also have had an amazing impact on the amount of sewage being dumped in our bays. To reduce the flow of trash into our bays, they have collaborated on the funding and installation of more than 4,000 street storm drain inserts in Nassau County. Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. works diligently to partner with industry businesses, non-profits, government agencies and academic institution’s striving to promote comprehensive understanding of local

Language, Culture, Camaraderie Eager to learn about other cultures, elementary and middle school students from the Massapequa School District took in all that was offered at the annual World Language Festival on March 27. The 15th annual event was held in the evening at Massapequa High School featuring arts and crafts, entertainment and food. The festival showcased the six languages offered by the district — American Sign Language, French, German, Italian, Mandarin Chinese and Spanish. High school students from world language classes, clubs and honor societies coordinated the activities and stamped passports for the children as they visited each room. In the
gymnasium, students from the Mandarin Chinese program performed sword and fan dances, while ASL students signed along with different songs including the “Star-Spangled Banner.” An international food court in the cafeteria was a popular spot throughout the night. As students in the German program welcomed guests for a cookie decorating activity, they gave each child a nametag with his or her German-translated name. In the French room, youngsters could make crafts based on the different countries or regions where French is spoken, such as Mardi Gras masks. One of the Spanish rooms had a restaurant theme and another was a game room. Children used their
language skills to give and guess clues in Guess Who and figure out where to put their feet in Twister. The Mandarin Chinese room featured a chopsticks competition and yo-yo dance workshop. Across the hall, students labeled the different regions of Italy on a large map. Another room had activities devoted to the Mexican celebration of Day of the Dead. Students from the National Art Honor Society did face painting. William Anderson, the curriculum associate for world language and ENL, said the night was a great opportunity for children make connections globally and with each other by experiencing different languages and cultures.

FUNKY SOCKS FOR AWARENESS - East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District marked World Down Syndrome Awareness Day on March 21 with Rock Your Socks day. In partnership with Massapequa SEPTA, students and staff wore fun and colorful socks to school. Staffers Spreading Good News A dozen aspiring journalists shared their love of writing and newsgathering as students from Massapequa High School’s student newspaper visited fifth-graders at Unqua Elementary School on March 26. Editors and reporters from The Chief hosted a twohour writing workshop for their younger peers. They brought copies of past issues to familiarize the fifthgraders with the different parts of a newspaper or, for those used to getting their information online, with the concept of a newspaper. Of course, Chief staffers talked about their digital presence as well. The fifth-graders enthusiastically browsed through the newspapers and many found people they knew in the stories
and pictures, such as older siblings, cousins and neighbors. They also got to learn more about the different activities, events and programs at their future school. “It’s a whole new world for them,” said senior Michael Riggi, the editorin-chief. “It’s a preview for high school and they’re so excited because they will get a chance to do all of this in the future.” The high school students discussed the process of creating a newspaper, from generating story ideas, to interviewing sources, to writing, editing and publishing. They noted the importance of finding topics that are current and newsworthy. Fifth-graders then got to be the reporters by brainstorming topics and writing articles with the
help Chief members. Michael said that he and his fellow editors were thinking of ways to promote the club, and thought it would be great to visit students in the elementary school, who might not have seen The Chief before. Adviser Melissa Hornik added that she hopes this will spark interest among the fifth-graders in joining the middle school newspaper, the Berner Beacon, and ultimately continue on to The Chief. “This club obviously excels,” Ms. Hornik said, noting that the newspaper has earned several awards this year. “It’s nice to have their work recognized, and the elementary students are giving them the recognition they deserve for all of the hard work they put into The Chief.”
