SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR - McKenna Elementary held its annual PTA sponsored Scholastic Book Fair from March 19th-20th. This year’s theme was Under The Sea. Massapequa High School Advanced Placement Government and Economics classes, taught by Daniel Bachman and James Koester, attended a special Evaluation of Presidential Leadership Symposium at Hofstra University where two seniors, Danielle Bianco and Colin McGuire, were recognized with Awards of Excellence for the essays they wrote on topics related to presidents and politics. The symposium provided high school students and teachers with evaluations of presidential leadership from the perspective of keynote speakers Republican Party consultant Ed Rollins and former Vermont governor and presidential candidate Howard Dean. Colin, who was selected to ask a question at the symposium, inquired about Howard Dean’s 50-state strategy, a plan to build up party infrastructure and candidate recruitment at every level and in every state. According to Bachman, both Rollins and Dean focused on the theme that asking for a citizen’s vote is a matter of respect and responded on the topic by noting the problems associated with voter apathy, energizing the youth vote and appealing to voters in the opposing party. “The students enjoyed the symposium and brought back an energetic discussion to their AP social studies classes,”

cause some perceived slight…what? Chances are, it’s something else entirely. (Read: Everything is not always about you!) The thing is, when you’re in a foul frame of mind, it’s difﬁcult to see beyond the black cloud. Best everyone stay out of your way until the storm has passed, as you can’t be held accountable for your tone, whether impatient, annoyed, indifferent… in short, anything but friendly. Negativity breeds more negativity, and those who dare to cross paths with those in such a state are just asking for trouble. And so the cycle continues. Day after day of trying to dodge the slings and arrows of those who

would bring you down to their level, if you let them. It’s an effort, to be sure, to block out and continue on your merry way. But what other choice do we have? There comes a point when you need to avoid being sucked into the cycle. I often envy those who seem to exude nothing but positive vibes, who appear to be in a constant state of contentment. Is it genuine? How do they achieve such a mentality and, better yet, maintain it continuously? I suppose, even if it is merely a means of keeping up appearances, such a skill should be applauded. Fake it ‘til you make it, as they say. Perhaps they should hold a class on that.

Thirteen science research students from Massapequa High SchoolAmes Campus competed in the Third Annual Medical Marvels Competition hosted by North ShoreLIJ. Ninth graders Luke Colavita, Olivia Ferraro, John, Gonzalez, Kyra LaSpina, Nicole Leonick, Paul Lestingi, Deborah Lobaccaro, Kaitlin McWilliams, Gillian Murphy, Joseph Ryan, Matthew Shea, Jordan Taylor and Kaley Theodorous represented two of 42 teams from across Long Island that competed for an $1800 ﬁrst-place prize. The competition challenged teams to present how science research, technology, and public policy could be changed to manage stress and develop resilience in their high-paced lives. Massapequa’s two teams represented different goals for increasing mental health awareness. Dressed in their professional best, the students presented

their research to a panel of judges and their peers, and had three minutes to succinctly address how mental health awareness is important to all students. One team addressed changing school start times and testing procedures, supported by international research that a later start time of just one hour would increase alertness and test scores as well as decrease the number of trafﬁc accidents in the early morning. The second team focused on apps and wearables that can monitor your sleep, breathing, and heart rate to alert the wearer of increased stress levels. In addition to presenting their work, students attended lectures by medical doctors and psychiatrists on the current issues in mental health awareness. They shared statistics on common issues with numbers as high as 1 in 10 students facing a situation in their scholastic career that could beneﬁt from a

Medical Marvels mental health professional. To that end, students were taught ways of coping with stress through apps, focusing exercises, and breathing techniques. “Our students left the competition with a feeling of accomplishment,” said Ames Campus science research teacher Gregg Hession who served as a mentor for this project along with science research teachers August Eberling and Nicole Gonzalez. “The pride in their work showed MEDICAL MARVELS - Thirteen ninth-grade science research students from in their enthusiastic Massapequa High School-Ames Campus competed in the Third Annual Medical discussion. Although they Marvels Competition. did not win, students eagerly took pictures with teachers and teammates on stage to commemorate the day.” Ames Campus social worker Kim Hession also worked with the teams to increase their awareness of mental health issues concerning teens today and helped the students develop their ideas to change mental health policies.

Berner Middle School to cheer on Massapequa’s Challenger Basketball Team, made up of special needs students in grades 7-12, as they competed against Seaford in their biggest game of the season. A culminating event of Spirit Week at Berner, the game epitomizes how students with special needs can participate in mainstream sports, despite their disabilities, and develop skills such as teamwork, cooperation, focus and grace. “The event gives students a venue where they can be like everyone else and enjoy a sport like everyone else, and provides a level of acceptance and support from the school community, which is incredibly important to the athletes and their families,” said Coach Kerry Regan, who coordinates the event. “There’s a wide range of skills and needs on the team.
