Blood Donations Critically Needed to Help Replenish Low Supplies

To help hospitals meet the ongoing and pressing need for blood during the coronavirus pandemic, Oyster Bay Town Councilman Lou Imbroto and Town Clerk Richard LaMarca invite residents to attend a Blood Collection Drive on Saturday, April 24th from 10am to 4pm at the Hicksville Athletic Center, located at 167 S. Broadway in Hicksville. Councilman Imbroto stated, “You can save lives by donating blood this April at the Hicksville Athletic Center. Blood supplies have seriously dwindled during this COVID-19 health pandemic and are critically needed for local hospitals to meet the demand and continue saving lives. Please consider participating in

this blood drive on April 24th.” Appointments are preferred for the Town’s Blood Drive. Social distancing and sanitary protocols will be in place to maintain the health and safety of all donors. To qualify as a blood donor, a person must between the ages of 17 and 75 years old (16 with parental permission and 76 or older with a doctor’s note), weigh at least 110 pounds and not have donated blood within the last 56 days. Anyone who received a tattoo within the past 12 months is ineligible to donate. It is recommended that volunteers eat well (low fat) and drink ﬂuids in the days before the Blood Drive. Clerk LaMarca added,

“It’s quick, easy, and safe to donate a single pint of blood which can save up to three lives. If you have family members or friends willing to donate, please ask them to support our effort this year, as this initiative is more vital than ever to help make sure that our local hospitals can meet the excessive demand during the coronavirus pandemic and continue to save the lives of as many people as possible.” For additional information regarding the Town’s Blood Drive, contact the Town Office of Public Information at (516) 624-6380. Contractors For Kids (CFK) is a non-profit organization, which was founded for the purpose of providing assistance to families in Long Island communities. Their goal is to assist children and their families overcome obstacles that have unfortunately changed or have impacted their lives through the sickness, injury or death of a child. They are committed to this cause and want to give hope and reassurance for the futures of Long Islanders. CFK was founded in 2005 by Kevin Harney and Alan Nahmias of Stalco Construction. Kevin and Alan, both long-time philanthropists, saw the growing need for financial assistance in our communities and knew that something more needed to be done. Through random acts of kindness, they were slowly changing the lives of others, however they thirsted to make more change so they decided to form this non-profit, Contractors For Kids. The Board of Directors, members, supporters and volunteers of CFK are all “Contractors For Kids.” They are all helping others and building futures for children and their families in need. Their organization runs on donations only and is volunteer based, they have no employees. One family at a time, they make sure that the financial hardship brought on by sickness, injury or death does not destroy an already hurting family. Whether it is to pay a phone bill or a mortgage payment, they want to be there to help. So how do you qualify to get help? It’s quite simple. If you can prove that you are struggling financially because of the sickness, injury or death of a child, you live on Long Island (in Nassau or Suffolk County), and you have filled out their Application For Assistance, they will get in touch with you to see how they can be of help! National Drug Takeback Day to Properly Dispose of Old Medications Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently announced that the Town, in partnership with Drug Free Long Island and the Nassau County Police Department (NCPD), will host a ‘Shed the Meds’ event at Marjorie Post Park in Massapequa on Saturday, April 17th from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. “The Town of Oyster

Bay is proud to partner with Drug Free LI and the Nassau County Police Department on this important initiative to keep prescription drugs out of the wrong hands,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Through proper disposal of old medications, we can prevent them from contaminating the environment through improper disposal and

also keep them out of the hands of young people.” The event will take place at Marjorie Post Park (off Unqua Road in Massapequa), in the parking lot near the community center. This program is anonymous. For those who cannot make it to the event, the Nassau County Police Department would like to remind residents

Saladino, Johnson Invite Residents to Oyster Bay Harbor Environmental Cleanup Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Michele Johnson invite residents to participate in a special Oyster Bay Harbor & Beach Cleanup, scheduled for Saturday, April 17th. The event is co-sponsored by the Town of Oyster Bay, the North Oyster Bay Baymen’s Association (NOBBA) and Friends of the Bay. Preregistration is necessary. “This great environmental cleanup initiative features volunteers and Town employees rolling up their sleeves and working sideby-side to remove litter and debris from the beaches and shoreline areas along Oyster Bay Harbor,” Supervisor Saladino said. “We invite

residents of all ages to pitch in and help make a difference in our community!” Volunteers are invited to participate in the cleanup, which will run from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The central meeting place will be Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park launching ramps and waterfront gazebo off of Larrabee Avenue, Oyster Bay. Additional locations for the clean-up include Theodore Roosevelt Beach in Oyster Bay, Stehli Beach in Bayville and Centre Island Beach in Bayville. Typically, in year’s past, harbor and beach cleanup events have resulted in about forty thousand pounds of debris collected by

volunteers. Councilwoman Johnson stated, “Each year, countless amounts of paper, food, plastics and other trash are discarded on beaches or dumped overboard from recreational and commercial vessels.
