Long Island’s Largest Car Show On April 30th At Tobay Beach Hundreds of Vehicles to Participate, Trophy Presentation, Free Concert & Free Admission Long Island’s premier car show experience will take place on Saturday, April 30, 2022 from 11am to 4pm at TOBAY Beach (rain date May 1st). The Supervisor’s TOBAY Beach Classic will be co-sponsored by Car Show Long Island and will feature hundreds of automobiles, trucks, military vehicles, and emergency service vehicles. A live concert performed by That 70’s Band will take place during the day, followed by trophy presentations. The event is free for spectators. Supervisor Saladino stated, “Whether you’re a proud classic car owner or you want to see the

best cars in the region, Car Show Long Island is the place to be! This free family-fun event is a perfect way to spend the day, all with the beautiful backdrop of TOBAY Beach. Spectators can check out cool cars, vendors, exhibits and enjoy live music while surrounded by Long Island’s best classic, muscle, antique and exotic cars.” Trophies will be awarded in each class, and children will have a say when deeming which rides are their favorites in the SUNation Kids’ Choice Award. Car Show Long Island’s 2022 TOBAY BEACH Spring Classic is made possible

have resulted in 40,000lbs of debris collected by volunteers. Councilwoman Walsh stated, “Each year, countless amounts of paper, food, plastics and other trash are discarded on beaches or dumped overboard from recreational and commercial vessels. Allowing this litter to remain on our shorelines will only lead to increasingly worse damage for the environment. Together, we’re improving Mother Earth by cleaning up and protecting our environment.” No preregistration is required. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Massapequa Village Mayor Danny Pearl today announced that the Town and Village, in partnership with Drug Free Long Island and the Nassau County Police Department (NCPD), will host a ‘Shed the Meds’ event at Massapequa Park Village Hall on Saturday, April 16th from 10:00am – 1:00pm. “The Town of Oyster Bay is proud to partner with Massapequa Park Mayor Danny Pearl, Drug Free LI and the Nassau County

Police Department on this important initiative to keep prescription drugs out of the wrong hands. Through proper disposal of old medications, we can prevent them from contaminating the environment through improper disposal and also keep them out of the hands of young people.” In cooperation with Drug Free Long Island, and the Nassau County Police Department, the Town and Village will host this event at Massapequa Park Village Hall, in the back parking lot. Hope for Youth www.hfyny.org Hope For Youth’s dedicated team of staff, volunteers and interns facilitates positive change in the lives of Long Island children, youth and families. The non-proﬁt runs what they call a Kinship Caregiver Program, which helps create a better Long Island by offering a child a pathway to a better future. Sadly, children may be removed from their homes for many reasons. Nationally, the four key reasons are neglect, parental drug use, a caretaker’s inability to cope and physical abuse. Equally as sad, Long Island, like many communities across the country, is in dire need of foster parents for children from birth to the age of 18, whether these caregivers have informal or formal custody of children. Such care isn’t always provided by unrelated individuals. When provided by a relative, it’s called “kinship care.” Kinship foster parents must provide full-time protection and nurturing of a child, as well as a stable and safe home. They must be above the age of 21 and meet a number of additional eligibility requirements. Designated kinship foster parents receive various types of ﬁnancial support. They also receive family services, case management support and other supportive services.

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County also provides support groups for both adults and children, plus monthly social activities for families. Assemblyman Durso Announces His Pet Food Drive

Assemblyman Michael Durso (Massapequa Park), in coordination with Long Island Cares and Baxter’s Pet Pantry, is inviting the local community to participate in his annual Pet Food Drive that runs through Thursday, May 12, 2022 to help more pets stay out of shelters and remain at home with their families-where they belong. Assemblyman Durso is asking residents and community organizations to kindly donate unopened bags of dog and cat food, canned food, pet supplies, and food for other domestic animals such as hamsters, fish, and birds. All items collected will be donated to Baxter’s Pet Pantry, operated by Long Island Cares, which provides free

Cats and dogs getting new homes will also have new blankets thanks to the efforts students in the Builders Club at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District. The service-oriented organization made no-sew blankets that were donated

to Last Hope Animal Rescue in Wantagh. Joanne Anderson, a volunteer for Last Hope, visited the Builders Club meeting afterschool on March 11 to accept a donation of about 15 blankets. She said that when people come in to adopt animals, they will receive a blanket as a gift.

Adviser Bill Pollock said that students were enthusiastic about a project that will benefit animals, as many have cats and dogs at home. The next service initiative for the Builders Club will be a beach cleanup.

Dangers Of Dented Cans

Dented cans have long been a source of confusion and concern for shoppers. They may be discounted and seem like a good deal, but some of those dented cans may not be safe to eat. Damaged cans may be harboring food that contains botulism and other toxins. According to the United States Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Services, if a can of food has a small dent but is otherwise in good shape, the food should be safe to eat. However, deeply dented cans should be discarded. Dented cans of food that are safe will have smooth dents or dents that are not on the seams of the can. A person should avoid sharp dents, dents in the seam and dents where the seam and the can meet. In addition, if the can is bulging or swollen, it should be avoided. Dents in a seam can let in air and bacteria. Deep dents may have left pinholes, again where bacteria can enter.
