Massapequa High School’s Robotics Club has had a successful season, with three of its five teams earning berths at the U.S. Open Robotics Championship in Council Bluffs, Iowa. The district hosted both the Long Island regional and the Southern New York State championships at Berner Middle School earlier this year, sponsored by Vex Robotics. Massapequa has previously hosted First Lego League tournaments, and this was the first time partnering with Vex. Massapequa High School technology teacher and RoboChiefs coach Brian Vanek earned the Volunteer of the Year award at the regional competition and Technology Education Chairwoman Susan Thompson received the same award following the state tournament. “There’s so many people

ALS Ride for Life spoke to a group of ninth-graders about the disease and about the annual fundraising event that has raised $7 million during two decades. During the past two years, the course has gone through Massapequa, with students and staff standing outside of several of the district’s schools with large banners to show

He also spoke of the small but meaningful acts that inspire people with ALS to keep on living and fighting, from simple words of encouragement to the Ice Bucket Challenge craze of 2014. Fish Art graders recently completed an interdisciplinary art project. After reading the book “The Rainbow Fish” by Marcus Pfister, students made their own fish paintings using oil pastels and watercolor paints,
and then matted them on construction paper. The assignment also had a character education component, as the book included lessons on sharing, friendship and kindness.

In Julie Thornton’s fashion design class, students had to make an outfit out of unconventional materials. Elizabeth saved 3,874 notes with Join.me codes and used them to make the skirt part of her dress. Groups of 26 Post-it notes were folded through an origami technique she learned from her sister and put together to make tear drop-shaped bundles. The
crop top was made using Gatorade bottle caps, with other pieces of paper with Join.me codes stuck on. They are held together with fishing line and glue. Elizabeth’s work was selected for the Art in the Heart exhibit hosted by the Long Island Art Teachers Association, and she received an award for 3-D Excellence. “For me, this dress goes beyond a design that incorporates Join. me codes,” she said. “This outfit is extremely symbolic and through this outfit a story can be told. Whether it be through inspiring me, writing down codes, helping conceptualize the design or actually helping me construct the dress, so many people have had pivotal roles in creating this outfit.” Ms. Thornton explained that Elizabeth’s creation was a multidisciplinary project.
