While vast numbers of young people on Long Island are fortunate to be raised in stable and well-functioning households, the sad truth is that many children and adolescents in Nassau and Suffolk counties face major difficulties as they grow up, confronting challenges such as substance use, mental health disorders, incarcerated parents, child abuse and trauma, amongst other issues. Fortunately, a number of highly committed non-profit organizations in our area are working every day to provide those young people with opportunities to improve their circumstances and to put their lives on a strong and promising footing. Hope for Youth, is one of these outstanding organizations. Founded in 1969, Hope for Youth is a private social service agency that works to facilitate positive change in the lives of children, adolescents and families on Long Island. Based in Amityville, the organization provides residential care, foster care, preventive services and out-patient programs that help young people become self-sufficient and achieve their full potential. Remarkably, through its multiple residential and out-patient facilities and programs, Hope for Youth impacts the lives of more than 14,000 local children, teens and families each year.
