Less than one week into the new season, and I came down with a cold. Not just any cold, mind you – the epitome of chest colds, complete with congestion, sinus pressure and one of those irritating, incessant sort of tickles in the back of the throat that seem to kick into high gear right around bedtime. All winter, and not a snifﬂe. That, I believe, is what they call irony. After reading “Esperanza Rising,” fifth-graders in Colleen Kiley’s class at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District created their own board games based upon the historical fiction novel. The activity allowed

students to create a visual representation of the book by incorporating elements of the plot and the main characters into their games. Each group had to make a game board, pieces and directions. One group’s product, River Runner, followed

Esperanza’s journey from Mexico to California and players had to answer questions about the story to advance. Another group created the characters out of clay to serve as game pieces.

History came alive for secondary students from the Massapequa School District, who recently participated in National History Day at Hofstra University. This year’s theme was “Taking a Stand in History,” and two students earned awards for their projects. Students and staff at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District used their feet to achieve a feat - raising hundreds of dollars for Down Syndrome International. The school marked World Down Syndrome Day on March 21st with

a “Rock Our Socks” fundraiser. Children and adults were asked to wear funky socks to school and donate a dollar. The idea was brought to the school by the parent of an Unqua kindergartner with Down syndrome, who provided socks for the staff. The fundraiser was organized

and promoted by the Student Council. The purpose of “Rock Our Socks” was to raise money for a cause that benefits a child at the school, and to raise awareness about the challenges that people with Down syndrome face.

Language Festival Elementary students got an insight into the Massapequa School District’s extensive World Language program during an evening of food, fun and entertainment at Massapequa High School on March 22nd. The 13th annual World Language Festival featured activities centered on the six LANGUAGE FESTIVAL - High school and elementary school students came languages offered in the together to celebrate Spanish culture. Activities were organized and led by high school World Language students and each room had its own theme. Children made crafts to celebrate the holiday traditions of Italy, decorated gingerbread cookies and colored paper crowns in the German fairy tale room and learned how to use Chinese yo-yos and chopsticks. The American Sign Language room had a

Disney theme with games that allowed elementary students to learn some basic signs. Crafts from various French-speaking areas such as Paris, Belgium, Madagascar and New Orleans gave children a hands-on experience. They could make Guatemalan worry dolls and play popular board games in Spanish. “It’s a really good way for children to experience different cultures, have fun and learn new things such as words in different languages,” said senior Alexandra Kanapes, a German language student. “Planning our activities was a group effort and it was really good to teach the language that we love to learn.” National Art Honor Society students had a facepainting booth to paint the ﬂags of other countries. In the gymnasium, there were cultural performances including Chinese Lion and Kung-Fu Fan dances. Guests were able to enjoy

dinner and dessert at an international food court in the cafeteria. Bill Anderson, the curriculum associate of World Languages and ENL, said the purpose of the event was to introduce the elementary students to the program and get them thinking about what language they would want to learn in middle school and beyond. He added that turnout was very high this year because of the introduction of the FLES program in third grade, which provides weekly Spanish instruction. The event was also promoted extensively as Berner Middle School students made posters that were hung throughout the elementary schools. “The children were engaged and had a great time at our World Language Festival,” Mr. Anderson said. “I think they learned the importance of studying another language and exploring other cultures.”

teacher at Fairfield Elementary School, received a Teacher Service Award. She has worked in the district for nearly 10 years and was recognized as a child-centered educator who possesses creativity and enthusiasm for her work. Former Massapequa High School Principal

Dr. Barbara Williams, who retired in June 2016, earned an Administrator Service Award. She was cited as a visionary leader who tirelessly supported her staff and advocated for her students. Dr. Williams served as the leader of the Ames campus for five years followed by six years at the helm of the main campus,

cultivating environments in which students challenged themselves with rigorous courses. Kathleen Daly and Judy Comerchero received excellence awards for support staff. Ms. Daly, who has worked in Massapequa as a secretary since 1999, supports the district’s technology, human

resources and assessment management offices. She was described as “an irreplaceable member” the central office team. Ms. Comerchero has been the secretary to the assistant to the superintendent for human resources since 2003, and was recognized for her positive and helpful attitude, as well as her

skilled and efficient work. Joe Davis received a Community Service Award. As the owner of Joe Davis and Sons Landscape Contractors, he has donated his time and talents to beautify district properties, including the area surrounding the Sept. 11 Memorial Tribute in front of the high school.
