After completing two highly successful Boating Safety Seminars, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Michele Johnson today announced plans to offer a third Boating Safety Seminar on Saturday, May 19th from 8am to 4pm at the Oyster Bay Community Center, located at 45 Audrey Avenue in Oyster Bay. Car Show Long Island Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino announces the launch of Car Show Long Island, a new premiere experience, kicking off on Saturday, April 28th from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at TOBAY Beach with its 2018 Spring Dust Off. Hundreds of automobiles, trucks, military vehicles, and emergency service vehicles will be on display for spectators to enjoy. A live
concert performed by That 70s Band will take place during the day, followed by a trophy presentation. Supervisor Saladino stated, “Whether you’re a proud classic car owner or you want to see the best cars in the region, the Car Show Long Island is sure to please! A classic event in the making, this premiere Car Show will be the first of many presented by the Town of Oyster Bay.”
This family-fun event is a perfect way to spend the day, all with the beautiful backdrop of Tobay Beach. Spectators can check out cool cars and enjoy a live concert performed by “That 70’s Band” – New York’s 70’s Disco, Dance and Funk group. Enthusiasts and spectators can also grab a bite to eat at the bayside restaurant Mango Bay Latin Kitchen & Cantina or grab something to eat-on-
the-go from one of the food tents. Trophies will be awarded to the best-of-the-best, and children will have a say when deeming which rides are their favorites in the Kids’ Choice Award. The Batmobile and several other Hollywood vehicles -designed by the famous George Barris - created for major motion pictures and television will be on display thanks to the Autoseum
Automotive Teaching Museum of Garden City. The 2018 Spring Dust Off is part of “Car Show Long Island,” and made possible through the generous support of many partners including Bethpage Federal Credit Union, WBAB Radio 102.3 FM, Parts Authority, and Mango Bay. The Time of the Season And just like that, spring has arrived, with its bursts of warm sunshine coaxing the flower blossoms from beneath the winter-hardened soil. The Easter Bunny has already come and gone, and plans are well underway for summer vacations and the tantalizing temptation of beach season. Seems we were only just beginning to put together our Christmas shopping lists not so long ago, doesn’t it? It’s funny, how this concept of time seems to work its way into nearly every conversation in one respect or another the lack of it, its tendency to pass by too quickly… seldom have I heard the argument that there is simply too much time to know what to do with. Never, in fact. Seems this would be a rather enviable problem to have. But alas, this is most certainly not the case. As with most of life’s
struggles, it is how we choose to deal with, and hopefully, to overcome these issues that is the most important. Redirecting our focus constantly, from wallowing in the negativity of why did this happen? to being proactive in setting a plan for what would I like to happen? going forward. No use dwelling on the past; we need to be present in order to look to the future with anything resembling a clear perspective. They say hindsight is 20/20; but is it truly? I would argue that, even upon reflecting on past events, I do not have an unequivocal assessment of how things might have turned out differently; or even, if they should have. No, I am a firm believer that all things happen for a reason, even if that reason is not immediately - or ever - apparent. Some things are simply not meant to be

understood beyond a shadow of a doubt. Life is nothing if not filled with unexpected twists and turns, and a touch of the unknown. I recently came across a quote which said, in part, that it is not truly the unknown which we fear; but rather, what we think we know of the unknown. What an interesting concept, this notion that most of our apprehensions are selfmade and, if we would only take care to take a step back and let things play out a bit, perhaps we would be pleasantly surprised as to the outcome. Spring is traditionally seen as a time of growth and progress, naturally and otherwise. The seeds must be planted and cultivated, in hopes of a fruitful season. Whether things blossom as we wish, well, that remains to be seen. As with most things, only time will tell.

Friends of Karen
Friends of Karen is a nonprofit organization that supports critically-ill children and their families. This year, they are celebrating their 40th anniversary; four decades of bringing help, hope and support to over 15,000 children and their families in the tri-state area. I had the pleasure of meeting with some of their staff members to grasp a better understanding of all they have done and all they continue to do for those in need. In 1978, Friends of Karen began with one family, one child, Karen MacInnes; and one inspired woman, Sheila Petersen, who wanted to sustain her close friends through the devastating illness of their daughter. Today, Friends of Karen serves hundreds of families by providing emotional, financial and advocacy support to children with life-threatening illnesses, and to their families in order to help keep them stable, functioning and able to cope, at no cost. To apply for help, a parent or guardian of the ill child must call the organization and speak to a member of their Family Support Team. It is apparent to me that Friends of Karen wants whomever is going through a tough and unimaginable critical illness to know that they are not alone and that help is available for them. Friends of Karen often hosts or participates in many events within their community. On Saturday, May 5th and Sunday, May 6th, they are hosting a team in the Long Island Marathon at

Gardening is a popular activity that seems to be gaining even more supporters. Statistica reports that the number of people who gardened within the last 12 months in the United States rose from around 105 million in 2008 to 118 million in 2017. Gardening can be relaxing yet physically demanding work. Gardeners who find themselves battling aches and pains after spending time in the garden may need to make a greater effort to reduce injuries and improve comfort when tilling, weeding or installing new landscape features.

Warm Up
Just as novice athletes wouldn’t dive right into a strenuous workout at the gym, nor should novice gardeners immediately pick up a shovel and jump into digging a hole for their new tree. Gardening requires bending, stooping, lifting, twisting and other movements that work the entire body. Spending 10 or more minutes stretching, walking and doing a few back and arm rotations can limber the body up for the physical activity to come.
Use Proper Form
Think about the mechanics of lifting weights during a workout, as home and garden tasks may mimic movements made when exercising. The occupational therapists at Bend Spinal Care say that strain on the lower back can be reduced by positioning objects close to the body and its center of gravity when lifting them. Furthermore, people can contract their abdominal (core) muscles when lifting and bending to support the back. When lifting heavy objects, power should be derived from the legs and buttocks rather than the back.
Keep Items Close
Keeping work closer to the body will reduce the need for stooping, leaning or
reaching, which should cut down on pulled muscles. Long-handled tools can help minimize reaching. Use step ladders to reach high areas or get down on padded cushions to work closer to the ground. This alleviates strain to the neck from having to look up or down for extended periods of time. Raised garden beds can bring plants to a person’s level. The therapists at ProCare Physical Therapy say that working below shoulder level whenever possible can prevent shoulder strains; otherwise, perform tasks for no more than five minutes at a time.

Create a teenfriendly space at home Know who to call when you smell gas. Natural gas emergencies can happen anywhere, anytime, and it’s up to you and your nose to help.
Parents who want to keep teens nearby can create hangout spaces at home that make it easy for teens to feel comfortable with their friends. These “teen caves” can be private but permit supervision when necessary. With a few modifications, it’s possible to transform a room in a home into a teen-friendly hangout space.
Have a snack station. Some teenagers always seem to be hungry, and hanging out with friends while enjoying food is a popular pastime. When renovating a room into a teen cave, find a way to make food a focus. Install a mini-refrigerator and nonalcoholic bar where kids can serve snacks to friends. How to hang photos and artwork with ease Personal touches turn a house into a home. Hanging pictures, whether they’re personal photographs or artwork, can really change the character of a room. Unfortunately, some people may not know the proper ways to display pictures on a wall. Design maven Martha Stewart advises that the first step is to gather all of the pictures that are in consideration for hanging. This will enable a person to see what is available and edit their selection based on the space available, theme or color scheme. Having the artwork there enables a person to move it around like a puzzle until the placement feels just right. Next, plan on hanging artwork at 57 inches on center, according to the renovation experts at Apartment Therapy. “On center” means the middle of the photograph or painting will always be at 57,” as this measurement represents the average human eye height. This height is regularly used as a standard in many galleries and museums.

When the goal is to hang multiple pictures, treat the entire grouping as
a single unit. This means creating the layout and finding the center of the middle piece of the grouping. To make picture grouping easier, use paper templates with arrows to indicate whether the artwork will be hung horizontally or vertically. These templates can then be easily taped to the wall and rearranged until the grouping is ideal. There are no hard and fast rules concerning frames, meaning they do not all have to match. But placing framed artwork side by side can give a person a feel for whether the images and the frames work together in the space. Some people like to use frames of similar colors and sizes. Others want the eclectic mix-and-match appeal. It’s ultimately up to the homeowner. Measuring is key to hanging a picture correctly on the wall. Take into consideration the type of attachment, whether it’s D-rings, sawtooth hangers, wire or other fasteners on the back. Measure from the top of the frame to the hanger. Measure the wall to achieve
the 57” on center location, and then calculate where this falls within the height of the artwork and frame top. Adjust accordingly and mark. Then measure the distance from the frame top to the hanger location on the wall. Be sure to take the weight of the picture into consideration when selecting hanging hardware. Wall anchors may be needed if measurements determine a wall stud will not help secure the artwork — to keep the frame sturdy in the drywall. Home improvement resource Today’s Homeowner also suggests using self-adhesive rubber bumpers to the bottom corners on the back of the frame before hanging so that the picture will not damage the wall and will help it hang level. It can take a few attempts to hang pictures correctly, but with practice it should come with greater ease. The good news is there are new products constantly being evolved to make picture hanging easier, including those that enable removal and relocation of artwork without damaging walls.

Wood is a versatile and attractive decking material. According to the wood resource Real Cedar, some people think that wood is too expensive and requires too much maintenance. In fact, domestic softwoods can be very cost-effective decking options. According to Remodeling Magazine’s “Cost vs. Value” report, wood decks retain considerable resale value. In terms of maintenance, choosing a rot-resistant wood can result in less maintenance. Durable woods include cedar and redwood. Popular Mechanics says both species contain tannins and oils that make them naturally resistant to decay, rot and voracious insects. Periodic cleaning and inspection/repairs will be needed, but wood can be much more durable than people may think.
Composite
Composite decking and its close cousin, plastic lumber, are some of the fastestgrowing decking materials on the market. Many products are made from polyethylene or polyvinyl chloride. Some
composites will be comprised of recycled plastic and wood fibers to create a weather- and stain-resistant material that doesn’t warp, rot or splinter. Composite manufacturers continually experiment with manufacturing processes to duplicate the look of natural wood grain. Homeowners are often drawn to composite decking because such decks require little maintenance. These decks do not need to be sanded, stained or refinished. However, mold and mildew can grow in shady, damp areas, so homeowners must realize that these products are not completely maintenance-free.

Although aluminum decks are not seen that often, there are reasons why this decking material is becoming more popular. Animal Adventure There were some “oohs,” “aahs” and even a few “ewws” as second-graders at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District got an upclose look at reptiles. Dennis Fleury, director of the Tackapausha Museum, brought several
