We have been confronted with something that none of us, from experts to laymen, can fully understand. At the time of this writing, most of us have been asked to remain in our homes, with the exception of those of us who are considered essential to the preservation of our physical or mental health. Some of our businesses have been able to move remotely with little or no disruption, but I know that for many of our members, this has not been the case. As a Chamber, we are working very hard to ensure that we are able to disseminate current and pertinent information to you and keep you apprised of things as they unfold. Our County is working very hard to assess the financial impact and loss and develop options for assistance. As we have additional information, we will send it out to you!
Please continue to check our website and Facebook page as we will continue to post all relevant items related to this pandemic. Our office is also working remotely and we are working hard to make sure that any questions or calls are responded to. That said, this is a time for patience and understanding, as we too, are negotiating a changing world! And so my friends, on behalf of the Board, please take care of yourselves. In our varied industries, we often take for granted the importance of taking care of ourselves and we put our work first, but that said, this is the time when we need all our strength and energy!! Rest when you can, take some personal time as you are able, and trust, like in the past, that we will get through this...we have weathered many, many storms in the past. This too, will be something we speak of for generations to come and when we look back, as we will, we want to be able to say that we got it right!! This is a time to count our blessings, even when we feel let down and disappointed...a time to acknowledge those who bring smiles to our hearts and faces, and a time to count on the strength of the human spirit. Wishing you all the best of health, and looking forward to seeing you all face-to-face in the months to come!

In the meanwhile, I would like to ask several things of you...most importantly, please heed the warnings related to safety and health. Stay in your home as much as you are able, and minimize contact with others. Getting fresh air is essential, so long as you are maintaining the social distancing recommendations. While I know many of us feel invincible, this virus seems to have its own set of rules, so please be vigilant and smart! If not for yourself, think of others that could be at risk. For those of you who are out and about, I would ask you to support our local businesses as best as you can...our restaurants, pharmacies and drug stores, and our food stores! Talk about unsung heroes....making sure that we have food in our homes and a semblance of normalcy through takeout and delivery. Please keep our restaurants in mind if you are able to order food...every penny counts these days as we are all trying to minimize lay-offs and closings. Many of our restaurants have put curbside pick-up and delivery operations in place to better serve folks...doing the very best that we can is all that we can do! And, in so many instances, the best that we can do truly makes a difference!!!

Dear Editor: I want to address those on the front lines during these uncertain times. People around the world are watching to see - Can the people of New York handle this crisis successfully? Look to the people you are working with each day to do special things and say to them “We are a team and we are together on this”! “You are the heroes of healthcare”! We are made for this challenge! What is our continued focus? To provide the best possible care we can for everybody! We will stay safe using our proper Personal Preventive Equipment (PPE) guidelines and techniques. Our health care workers are on the front lines of this pandemic, and the American Heart Association (AHA) is working with them to implement training aids and resources they anticipate needing. For example: in response to an anticipated possible future shortage of trained ICU personnel utilizing ventilators, the AHA will soon be launching a new course for Oxygenation & Ventilation of the COVID-19

Literacy Learning Is Front And Center At Fairfield Literacy centers are an important part of daily instruction in Melanie Bonagura’s kindergarten class at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District which allow her students to work on several important skills. Students learn their CVC words – consonantvowel-consonant – which helps build the foundation
for fluency. They use flash cards, each with a threeletter word and a picture, to help students sound out and learn common words. Matching pictures to words, she explained, is a highly effective way to help students expand their vocabulary. Sentence building is another important skill. Ms. Bonagura provides each child with a bag of
words, which they have to put together to form a sentence. They also go book shopping so they can read many books and understand how stories are constructed. During center time, she is able to go around the room and work with students on an individual basis to assess their development as readers and writers.

Stony Brook University Hospital Accepting i-Pad Donations for Telehealth Distancing Measures Members of the community have been reaching out and asking how they can help the healthcare professionals and those afflicted with COVID-19 pandemic. One very important way: we need an influx of iPads to keep our inpatients connected to their providers and
their families. Anyone who has an iPad that is not being used, please consider donating to Stony Brook University Hospital. We will repurpose the donated device to provide telecommunication for our patients to connect with our medical staff.
We are looking for about one hundred devices of a supported iPad model. Before donation, the device should be cleaned, reset (click here for instructions), and placed in a zip lock bag if possible with a viable power chord. It takes a team effort to convert these devices into a
secure patient friendly solution. We will do our best to make your gift count and give someone comfort during these remarkable times. The donations of medical supplies and comfort care items such as gum, lip balm, tissues and snacks have been pouring in

A kindness initiative will reach from Pittsburgh Avenue in Massapequa to other parts of Long Island, the state and the country thanks to the efforts of first graders at Lockhart Elementary School.
The school’s kindness campaign, which kicked off in February, included the painting of kindness rocks by first graders. Library media specialist Tara Gonzalez worked with students to brainstorm
