Life, as we know it, doesn’t always go according to plan. Sometimes, the most carefully orchestrated days can go awry in the blink of an eye, through no fault of our own. How we react, and recover – or don’t, as the case may be – says a lot about our character, or lack thereof. The fact is, more days than not will fall into this category. Seldom do schedules run like clockwork; rare are there uninterrupted intervals of peace and tranquility. Life doesn’t stop for anyone, and you had best hang on for the ride. Speaking of rides, and unexpected detours if you will, I recently took my car – my six-year old “Celeste” – for her annual checkup at the dealership. Over three hours, and nearly $500, later, I left with new rear brakes, an oil change, assorted minor

maintenance and a clean bill of health – for now. One day later, a co-worker said, “Didn’t you just get your car serviced?” Um…yeah? “Brake light is out.” And here I was so excited to no longer have a monthly car payment to contend with. Sigh. Take a deep breath; it calms the mind… so they say. On that note, I am happy to report to many inquiring readers that I have found a new yoga studio at which to continue my practice; new locale, anyway – same teacher, same familiar faces, same positive vibes. It’s amazing what those 75 minutes can do for the soul, even after the most pressing of days. There is something truly healing about those inhales and exhales, even while the mind races through its endless loop of thoughts. We could all benefit from

slowing down the pace a bit, mentally and physically. What has rushing ever accomplished that more careful consideration and contemplation couldn’t have improved upon? Even my baby betta, Spud, seems to have realized this, as he purposefully swims to and fro in his tiny bowl, stopping every so often – about once every five minutes, on average – to carefully inspect the thermometer I recently installed. Maybe he can read? Even his eating habits are methodical, as he carefully chooses each crumb, gobbling them up in – I kid you not – size order. And here I thought I was a bit OCD. Like human, like pet. And with that, the clock has tolled on deadline. And so, In Step readers, I bid you a fond adieu. ‘Til next week. Make it a good one.

Sprachfest Forty-four students in the Massapequa School District’s World Language program participated in Sprachfest 2017 on March 18th, with several earning medals in various competitions. The annual event, coordinated by the American Association of Teachers of German, brings together students from all over Long Island for a day of games and events involving German language and culture. students from Berner Middle School and Massapequa High School’s main and Ames campuses. Events included spelling, vocabulary, number and geography bees; music and vocal performances; baking and gingerbread house competitions; and a video contest. Gold award winners included Ryan Cassano in the baking contest (bundt cake) and number bee, and Margaret Smith in vocal performance. Other

Students made their own paper pizza pies, with a full supply of “toppings” cut from colored pieces of construction paper. Each student measured the radius and diameter of the crust, and then used Pi to determine the circumference of their pizza.

Math activities in kindergarten classes had a St. Patrick’s Day twist at McKenna Elementary School in the Massapequa School District on March 17th. Students participated in St. Mathrick’s learning centers in which they practiced a variety of

Ocean Bowl Massapequa High School students recently participated in the National Ocean Science Bowl at Stony Brook University, coming away with a fourth-place finish. This is a national ocean awareness program for high school students sponsored by well-known organizations such as NOAA, Sea Grant and the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences. Each team consisted of five students and four competed during play. The Jeopardy-style competition highlighted knowledge of marine science while requiring game strategy and teamwork. This year’s theme was ocean energy. Massapequa’s Bay Scallop Bowl team, which participated for the sixth straight year, was led by captain Sarah Whelan, who is planning to pursue oceanic and environmental studies in college. The team also consisted of juniors Hunter D’Amore and Michael Cafiero, and seniors James Christian and Nick Bianco. They were coached by teacher Gregory Kwas and science curriculum associate Lisa Caputo. “This was a well-fought battle and the fourth-place finish is a new historic high for Massapequa High School,” said Mr. Kwas “We are very proud of our marine science whiz kids.”

Writing What’s Real Animals, sports and world features were just some of the topics that second-graders wrote about at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. The students celebrated their completed nonfiction stories during recent classroom publishing parties. The lesson began by studying children’s author and illustrator Gail Gibbons. Students used

her books as mentor texts, which served as examples of good writing. They then picked topics for their “All About…” books, did research and interviewed an expert. The writing process included creating a first draft, editing and revising their work, and creating a cover. In Janeen Signorile’s class, students shared their stories with their “milk and cookie partners.” As one child read their book,

the other listened and took notes on what they learned and what they liked. Teachers Karen Ellinger and Stacy Labriola brought their classes together for a publishing party, allowing each student to read to a new friend. The secondgrade teachers noted the hard work that the children put into their books and the pride they felt in being able to share their finished products with their peers.

Imbroto recently joined with fellow participants of the Special Olympics New York’s 4th Annual “Freezin’ for a Reason” Town of Oyster Bay Polar Plunge at TOBAY Beach.
