along the way that lead us to find comfort - even in our misery, at times - but comfort, nonetheless. Is it our great fear of change, of upsetting the routine, which leads us to sit back and watch as the world parades on by? There are those who make it their mission to take action, regardless of the unfavorable circumstances they may find themselves thrown into; but these individuals seem to represent a slim minority. How do we, the others, this great majority who desire to improve our lot in life, follow suit? Perhaps if these instants of time were filled with the “infinite variety” Chopra speaks of, life would not seem so mundane at intervals. But the fluctuations which occur are often too minor to register as true growth. It seems we, as a society, are incapable of feeling we are moving forward unless we are in the midst of tumult and upheaval.

Time, without fail, is the one thing we all wish we had more of, made better use of, didn’t squander so liberally… and the one thing we can never get back once it is lost. Even with this insight, though, it tends to continue to pass us by, just out of grasp. Why is that? What is the driving force behind our ability to let the minutes lapse into hours, the hours into days, the days into a downward spiral of being complacently, and consistently, unproductive? Some would point to the company we keep, the environments which surround us, the choices we make

The wish, always, is to find this path to progress and to have it be a steady - if uphill - journey. That, I think, is something we would all find ourselves infinitely more capable of sustaining. Time, on a road such as that, would travel with us, even, on pace; rather than sprinting miles ahead, leaving us in the rearview mirror. It may pass regardless, but at least we would be along for the ride, active participants in how we choose to use it rather than bystanders waiting for some phantom sign that this is it … NOW is your time! In reality “the” time is when you choose to acknowledge it, when you make it your mission to take control of your destiny and be a part of the process, instead of allowing it to happen to you. We know this, we believe this in the depths of our souls… now we need to use this knowledge to create the beautiful future we envision for ourselves.

Technology Learning Coach Vickie Ahearn created the lesson with the fifth-grade teachers. They explained that the activity taught students how to communicate and collaborate as they came up with strategies to try to be the winning team.

“This is what they will have to do in real life, regardless of the task,” said fifth-grade teacher Erin Rohan. “We will be sending them into the world to be the problem solvers, to be the critical thinkers, and they will all have to contribute. It’s great that we have these resources along with the support of our technology learning coaches to teach students these skills through such engaging activities.”

The Welcome Friends soup kitchens have provided hot, nutritious meals five days every week for over 27 years. The volunteer staff has increased to more than 200 remarkable members, and the guests typically number between 50 to sometimes more than 70 each night. Welcome Friends operates with a 100% volunteer staffed organization, assuring contributors that their donations are used exclusively for the preparation and serving of meals. The volunteers together form an outstanding team that addresses hunger and works to expand relationships with individual supporters,

local food markets, farm stands, religious institutions, community leaders, local village government and other agencies. After almost three decades serving the greater Port Jefferson area, the leaders and volunteers of Port Jefferson’s Soup announced their decision to become an independent not-for-profit corporation named “Welcome Friends.” The operation has become self-sustaining, with a solid foundation of local community support. Welcome Friends is currently in need of the following volunteer positions: Cooks, Assistant Cooks/ Food Prep and Pick Up/Delivery and a Grant Writer. Native American history came to life for fourthgraders at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, who took part in the Journeys program on March 12th. The gymnasium was transformed into a museum where students could walk through a model of a longhouse and touch animal fur. They were also able to bang on

a deerskin drum, turn corn into cornflower, and view artifacts such as clothing, instruments and hunting tools. In the game room, children heard traditional Native American stories and played a dice game. Stories included messages on kindness, respect and friendship. Later in the day, students made coil clay pots and participated in a voting activity.

The experience supported the fourth-grade social studies curriculum, which focuses on state and local history. Presenters Maddi Cheers and Chuck Gosline helped students make connections between Native American life and present day customs and practices, such as how the Iroquois style of Democracy is the foundation of government in the United States.

Reviving the Past Third-graders became time travelers at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, as they studied life on Earth millions of years ago. To coincide with the science unit on fossils, students learned about the Paleozoic, Mesozoic and Cenozoic eras. They looked at real fossils from other areas, including

sea creatures from nowinland states Montana and Wyoming. Students worked in groups to create dioramas from those three time periods. Starting with an empty cardboard box, each group used various materials such as construction and tissue paper, cups, cardboard tubes, cotton, rocks and plastic dinosaurs to create

a scene from their assigned prehistoric era. Magnet and STEAM teacher Lorie Moran said the children had to find out “what was cool” about their time periods and make a visual recreation. Students followed the engineering design process. After completing research, they had to draw a plan before building their three-dimensional models.

Alyssa Mener and Harlee Torres from the Massapequa UFSD, both of whom study music at Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA), were inducted into the LIHSA chapter of the Tri-M Music Honor Society. Tri-M, a part of the National Association for Music Education, recognizes student musicians for their academic and musical achievements.

Candidates for membership in Tri-M must meet a rigid set of eligibility requirements in several categories including participation, leadership, achievement, service and character. Tri-M members must maintain a grade point average of 85 or higher, dedicate time to school and community service, and demonstrate exemplary character traits, such as respect, responsibility,

dependability, fairness, caring and citizenship. Founded in 1936, Tri-M is the only national honor society for music students. Tri-M’s mission is to transform student musicians into future leaders in music education and advocacy. Each year, the honor society gives out thousands of dollars in scholarships to students who demonstrate exceptional service and leadership skills.

Macagnone today announced that registration for the Junior Summer Golf Camps at the Town of Oyster Bay Golf Course in Woodbury, located at 1 South Woods Road in Woodbury, will begin in mid-March and continue through Spring and into the summer. “Boys and girls between the ages of 6 and 17 years old can take advantage of this terrific program to hone their skills on the course under the guidance of experienced golfing professionals,”
