In Search Of Sunsets By: Jamie Lynn Ryan There’s a saying that goes, “Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.” The goal, as I see it, is to capture as many of these moments as possible and preserve them in your memory. For me, this process is only enhanced by my love of photography. Sure, there’s something to be said for stepping back and simply observing the events before you, minus the ever-present haze of technology and gadgets galore. However, I feel
that photos help to string together the missing pieces, forming a minidocumentary of sorts of each of our lives. One of my favorite pursuits has always been capturing the perfect sunrise or sunset, that moment when all the colors burst forth in a radiant display of supernatural glory. It is easy to miss the beauty which surrounds us on a daily basis, so caught up are we in our own virtual worlds. Around every corner, there are lines and angles and reflections of light, which produce some of the most
brilliant visuals. Flowers, butterflies, candid shots of people in their element… open your eyes and you will see photo opps everywhere. Add to that the magic of Photoshop and Instagram, and the possibilities for manipulation of an ordinary photo into a masterpiece are endless. Of course, snap a truly spectacular shot and there may be #nofilterneeded! As we gingerly take our first steps into the Spring season, take a deep breath, look around and allow yourself to be moved. And make sure you have your camera handy.

The American Red Cross has awarded a $599,655 grant to the Health & Welfare Council of Long Island to support a disaster recovery center for nonprofits and volunteers who will help hundreds of homeowners affected by Superstorm Sandy repair their damaged homes. The funding will be used to house 150 volunteers at the new Long Island Disaster Recovery Center on the New York Institute of Technology campus in Central Islip. Without the grant, these volunteers would not be able to access housing while they work to repair 600 Sandy-damaged homes throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties over the year to come. The funding will also

physical education classes as a way to develop teamwork skills, rhythm, auditory processing and large motor skills, according to physical education teachers Kieran O’Brien, Karen Flynn and Michael Viola. The hoedown showcased their skills before hundreds of

parents and friends as they danced to the music of Bob Ruff and Jack Capon. The hoedown was judged by staff members and 24 winners who performed and dressed the best were treated to a lunch at All American Hamburger.
Kindergartners around the Massapequa School District showcased their counting skills with a host of activities that marked the 100th day of school. Students at East Lake Elementary School found their “inner divas” by designing original 100thDay T-shirts and modeling them down a red carpet, while students at Birch Lane and Lockhart elementary schools quickly “aged” by dressing as centenarians.
McKenna Elementary School students measured and colored a snake 100 inches long and followed 100 paper hearts to the principal’s office where they received a surprise, while Fairfield Elementary School students drew 10 dots on paper ladybugs and counted by tens to 100. At Unqua Elementary School, they made necklaces with 100 fruit loops, built towers with 100 red cups, matched numbers on a number chart, and

picked 10 items from 10 containers for goodie bags. Other festivities included making 100 day hats, illustrating a portrait of themselves at 100 years old, doing 100 exercises, sorting 100 unifix cubes in groups of 10 and participating in math and English language arts activities centered on the number 100. The children also shared 100 treats that they brought from home with their classmates.

Massapequa High School students John Latini and Gianna Schmidt were recognized for community service by the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards Program. After logging in more than 100 hours, John was honored with the President’s Volunteer Service Award, which was presented on behalf of President Barack Obama. Gianna was named a Local Honoree for her volunteer efforts. The awards salute the contributions made by young volunteers and recognize them as role models among their peers. John, a sophomore, is a Boy Scout who is currently working on his
Eagle Scout project. He devotes much of his time to Canine Companions for Independence by raising puppies and training them to be companions for people with disabilities. He also actively works to get other people involved to help defray the $50,000 price tag of training a dog, either through fund raising efforts or working with others in a group to share the cost of training a dog. Aside from his volunteer work, John has been on the varsity swimming and diving team since eighth grade. Gianna, a senior, organizes drives for clothing and supplies for a homeless shelter in

Farmingdale. As a member of Key Club and Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), she has been involved in volunteer activities such as the Key Club Bocce Tournament and Safe Halloween, a funfilled event for children. She has also volunteered at the Chief Challengers basketball game, and is an editor for the high school yearbook and a member of the Chiefettes kickline. “We are proud of the ways these students positively impact the community through their volunteering efforts,” said Massapequa High School Principal Dr. Barbara Williams. “They are role models for all of our students.”
Two Massapequa High School students out of 25 Island-wide made the highly competitive cut to participate in the Northrop Grumman High School Involvement Partnership (HIP) internship program. Seniors Brian O’Sullivan and Luciana Tangari began the seven-week program, which explores topics such as computer programming, communications technology and aircraft electromagnetics. So far, the students learned about structural engineering and received an assignment to build a weight-bearing bridge that will be tested later in the program. Both students take advanced math and science
courses and are planning to pursue careers in engineering or computer science. Brian is a member of the robotics team, which just competed at the state competition at Adelphi University. He also runs cross country. Luciana, one of only two females in the program, plans as her Girl Scout Gold Award project to develop a handson presentation for girls that encourages them to develop their math and science skills. She also participated in robotics, track and has been a member of the tennis team throughout her high school career. “Brian and Luciana are model STEM (science, technology, engineering
and math) students,” said Susan Thompson, Massapequa’s chairperson of Career & Technology Education. “They are wellrounded, hard-working, positive students who are open to innovation.” At the end of the program, Northrop Grumman will host a celebration for interns, mentors, parents, teachers and school administrators. Using a PowerPoint presentation, the interns will explain the work they have accomplished and provide feedback on their internship experience. This is the fourth year Massapequa High School has participated in this program.

Earning A Silver
Long Island High School for the Arts film student Max Novick took the Silver Key in writing for the entire northeast region during the 2014 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Max earned the award for an
excerpt from his featurelength screenplay Bagman, a dramatic thriller about suburban drug and party culture. Though he won the award for writing, Max is an all-around filmmaker with
an interest in every facet of the process. He plans to write, direct and produce feature films, and to that end will be applying to the University of California’s School of Cinema Arts and to New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. “I can’t see myself doing anything else,” Max said of filmmaking. “The way we shape our own narratives fascinates me. That’s why I’ve focused my energies on film. In a way, I have to do it.” And in truth Max does seem born to the craft. Since he can remember he has had an interest in storytelling. As a child playing with action figures, he would construct plots and build ongoing storylines. As early as second grade he would
write elaborate production pieces and cast classmates in them. But it wasn’t until seventh grade that he truly came into his own during a seven-week class with the New York Film Academy, at which Max began to learn about the mechanics of filmmaking. This experience started him down the path that inevitably led to his admission to the high school for the arts. “Instead of running around with my friends and a camera,” Max said, “I started applying to independent film productions.” Industry work gave him the discipline he needed, so that when Max arrived at the high school for the arts his talent blossomed. “The best part is the hands-
on aspect,” Max said of his LIHSA education. “I’m not just sitting around absorbing information, I’m learning from doing. I’m actually making films.” This hands-on approach, combined with an experienced faculty, has made all the difference for Max. “The program is so individualized and the curriculum so well planned that it turns film students into filmmakers at an unbelievably fast pace,” Max observed. “I work directly with my teachers to get the perspective you can only get from a seasoned professional. I even have the freedom to work on my own, outside projects. This school is devoted to turning students into the best they can be.” “I believe Max will make
feature films one day,” said film teacher Anthony Petrucci. “He possesses fierce determination, devotion, confidence and talent. That’s an unbeatable combination.” The LIHSA film program is an immersive, comprehensive digital filmmaking experience. Students are taught and trained in the values of artistry, visual storytelling, creative thinking, problem solving, technical acuity, leadership and communication skills. They are encouraged to take creative risks and to develop their artistic voices. By the end of the school year, each student has written, directed, photographed and edited his or her own original short film.

On February 26th, School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI), along with Farmingdale State College, presented its annual Fred Breithut Scholarship Breakfast Fundraiser at the college’s Campus Center. The admission suggested a donation of $30 that went towards the scholarship, which was awarded to Adam Lopez, Farmingdale State College Freshman, and a graduate of Longwood High School. At the event, guests enjoyed breakfast while listening to speakers, such as Joani Madarash, Executive Director, SBPLI; Dr. Hubert Keen, President of Farmingdale State College; Dr. Henry Sikorski, Chief Development Officer, Farmingdale State College; Dr. Lorraine Greenwald, Dean of International Education and Programs, Farmingdale State College; and Gordon Canary, District Office Manager, New York State Senator Phil Boyle’s office. When Mr. Lopez approached the podium, he expressed his gratitude for the scholarship and explained his passion for engineering and business, which led him to double major in Mechanical Engineering Technology and Business. The scholarship, which
was created in 2009, in honor of Fred Breithut, Founder of SBPLI, is awarded to an incoming Farmingdale State College student who has participated in SBPLI’s FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics programs and meets the eligibility requirements for the scholarship. The student receives $1,000 for each semester he/she attends the college (maximum of eight semesters). Mr. Breithut sadly passed away in 2010, and it has become even more important for SBPLI to keep this scholarship intact due to his love and admiration for students. The scholarship truly represents what Mr. Breithut supported: to further the education of the youth on Long Island. “We are thrilled to award this scholarship to Adam Lopez,” says Ms. Madarash. “He has dedicated a great deal of his time to SBPLI programs and has learned so much. We are confident that he will succeed throughout his four-years at Farmingdale State College. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto, together with Kids Helping Kids by Kids Way, Inc. co-Founders Robert A.J. Eslick and Philip M. Eslick, announce their co-sponsored Kids of Distinction community service based Scholarship Program for 2014. “The Kids of Distinction Scholarship Program was initiated in an effort to recognize outstanding young people who have been active in exceptional endeavors in their community,” Supervisor Venditto said. At last year’s ceremony, eight exceptional Town of Oyster Bay youngsters were honored for their commitment to their communities. In celebrating the ten-year anniversary of the Kids of Distinction program the Kids Helping Kids Scholarship Committee will award ten (10) - $2,000 scholarships this year. “The concept of the program is to recognize kids for taking part in activities done on their own initiative,” Philip said. “Last year’s group of winners certainly fit the bill, many going above and beyond the call of duty to help others in their community.” The Kids of Distinction program focuses on activities participated in outside of school. These activities should have, in some way, benefited the community. “For nine years, we have recognized a diverse group of students who really demonstrated caring and compassion to those around them,” Supervisor Venditto said. Robert added, “We are confident that this year’s scholarship
winners will be equally compassionate and worthy of this honor. The Kids Helping Kids academic scholarships greatly help students fund their college education and related expenses and in these tough economic times every dollar helps.” Nominees will be placed in two categories, those currently in fifth through eighth grade and those in grades nine through 12. The age groups were established so nominees can be evaluated fairly against their peers. Five winners will be selected in each category by a committee organized by Kids Helping Kids. “There are so many wonderful young people living in the Town of Oyster Bay who not only demonstrate academic or extracurricular skills, but also do a little something extra to help make the world a better place,” Supervisor Venditto said. “We felt it was important to recognize our young residents who involve themselves in voluntary community, charity or civic activities on their own individual initiative.” In addition, Kids Helping Kids by Kids Way Inc. is inviting several past Kids of Distinction scholarship recipients to attend the 2014 ‘Kids of Distinction’ scholarship ceremony in what they are calling What are they doing now? New Lunch Program while learning necessary life skills that will enhance their ability to live and work more independently. Life skills students and their job coaches introduced the “lunchto-desk” program to the administrative staff in early February. They delivered menus listing a variety of sandwiches and salads, along with instructions on how to place an order. So far, the program has been a win-win venture for both staff and students. “We are constantly looking for new skillbuilding opportunities for our Life Skills students and this initiative is an excellent
way to develop their social and task execution skills while boosting their confidence,” said Jean Castelli, executive director for Special Education and Student Support Services. “It’s always a pleasure to see our students venture into something new to expand their skillset,” added Superintendent Lucille Iconis. “The staff has embraced the opportunity to have lunch delivered to their desks and we all look forward to seeing these students improve their skills in the weeks ahead.”

On March 29th, the Village of Massapequa Park and the Greater Massapequa Day Committee will host another event for the veterans at Northport Veterans Hospital. The purpose of “Massapequa Cares” Day is to entertain the men who fought for our country with a USO type show.

Residents are invited to take part in the Town of Oyster Bay’s Adult Co-Ed Zumba, Yoga and Cardio Kickboxing Programs slated to start in April, according to Town Councilwoman Rebecca M. Alesia. The programs are open to players who are 18 and older, and will be held at the Town of Oyster Bay Hicksville Athletic Center. Participants may choose one day per week to take part in either Zumba, Yoga or Cardio Kickboxing for the 12-week programs. The Zumba program starts the week of Monday, April 7th and will be held Mondays from 7 to 8 p.m. or Wednesdays from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The Yoga program starts the week of Tuesday, April 8th will be conducted Tuesdays from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. or Saturdays
from 9 to 10 a.m. The Cardio Kickboxing class starts the week of Monday, April 7th and will be held Mondays from 8 to 9 p.m. or Fridays from 6 to 7 p.m. The programs, which are 12 weeks in duration, are $60 for residents and $70 for non-residents. Proof of residency is required for the resident discount. “Zumba, Yoga and Cardio Kickboxing are physical activities that help improve stamina and overall condition, “Councilwoman Alesia said. “Studies have also shown that frequent exercise is a great stress reliever.” Councilwoman Alesia noted that registration for both programs will take place at the Town of Oyster Bay Hicksville Athletic Center, 167 Broadway in Hicksville,
on Tuesday, April 1st and Thursday, April 3rd from 7 to 9 p.m. and Saturday, April 5th from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. After these dates, registration will continue in the Hicksville Athletic Center office based on availability. Please note that the schedule may be subject to change and residents are encouraged to inquire about special holiday scheduling. “The Town’s Co-Ed Programs also have a social benefit,” Councilwoman Alesia said. “They provide a fun opportunity to make new friends while getting fit.
